The Office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, Chennai, has issued a vacancy circular for filling 146 posts of Stenographer Grade I on deputation basis in the Income Tax Department's Tamil Nadu & Puducherry Region. Vacancies are available at different stations across Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The post is placed in Pay Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix, carrying Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400 plus the usual admissible allowances.
This is not a direct recruitment opportunity for fresh applicants. Eligibility is restricted to officers holding the post of Stenographer under the Central Government. An applicant must either hold an analogous post on regular basis in the parent cadre or department, or have completed 10 years of regular service in Pay Level 4 of the pay matrix (Rs. 25,500-81,100) or an equivalent grade. The maximum age for appointment on deputation is 56 years as on the closing date for receipt of applications, which is 30 October 2026.
The deputation tenure, including any immediately preceding deputation in another ex-cadre post in the same or another organisation, will ordinarily not exceed three years. Other terms and conditions of deputation are governed by Department of Personnel & Training OM No. 6/8/2009-Estt. (Pay II) dated 17 June 2010, as amended from time to time.
The circular also contains important ineligibility conditions. Departmental officers in the feeder category who are in the direct line of promotion are not eligible to be considered for appointment on deputation. Similarly, deputationists are not eligible to be considered for appointment by promotion. The current circular specifically states that officials already working as Stenographer Grade I in the Income Tax Department are not eligible for appointment on deputation, and officials working as Stenographer Grade II in the Income Tax Department are also not eligible because they belong to the feeder cadre.
Applications must be submitted in the prescribed proforma through proper channel. The forwarding Head of Office or Department must verify the applicant's particulars and certify that the prescribed eligibility conditions are fulfilled. The application package must include attested photocopies of APARs for the last five years, including NRC, with each page attested by an officer not below the rank of Under Secretary to the Government of India or equivalent; an Integrity Certificate; Vigilance Clearance; a statement of major and minor penalties for the last 10 years; and Cadre Clearance confirming that the officer will be relieved to join the Stenographer Grade I post if selected.
Completed applications should reach the Commissioner of Income Tax (Admin & TPS), Office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, Ponni Block, 121 Mahatma Gandhi Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai - 600034 on or before 30 October 2026. Candidates who volunteer for the post will not be permitted to withdraw their candidature subsequently. The department also reserves the right to reject any or all applications without assigning reasons.

Stenographer Grade I cadre post in the Income Tax Department, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry Region, to be filled from eligible Central Government Stenographers on deputation basis.

Officials already working as Stenographer Grade I in the Income Tax Department are not eligible for appointment to this post on deputation.
