IPRC's 22 Seats: Fitter Ex-SM, Machinist PwBD and Fireman PET in One ISRO Notice
ISRO Propulsion Complex IPRC/RMT/2026/01 has 22 vacancies in 11 post codes, but three Ex-SM/PwBD horizontal earmarks are included within—not added to—the 22. The vertical seat totals are UR 10, OBC 6, SC 3, ST 1 and EWS 2. A separate official amendment closes NEW online applications at 17:00 IST on 24 October 2026 and fee remittance at 17:00 on 29 October. The original notification still expressly prints 05 October as the age/eligibility reckoning date; no revised cutoff appears in the extension PDF. Applicants need to check the exact Diploma/NCVT/Cook credentials, Fireman preliminary medical upload and PET, three distinct written-paper patterns, category-specific thresholds and attendance-dependent fee refunds.

IPRC's 22 Seats: Fitter Ex-SM, Machinist PwBD and Fireman PET in One ISRO Notice
The headline 22 vacancies conceals important choices. Under ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) advertisement IPRC/RMT/2026/01, there are 11 separate post codes, not 11 identical entry routes. The selection criteria vary by qualification, age, reservation, examination pattern, physical standards and fee. The most valuable question is therefore not simply "Am I eligible for ISRO?" but "For which exact code, category and qualifying test am I eligible?"
IPRC is based at Mahendragiri, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, where ISRO develops, assembles, integrates and tests liquid-propulsion engines and systems. This matters for the likely first workplace and for candidates assessing the working environment. The notification warns that staff may subsequently be posted in other ISRO or Department of Space units in India; it does not promise permanent posting in Mahendragiri.
1. The late application window is not a new eligibility window
The original advertisement (12 September 2026) printed an online closing date of 5 October 2026 at 4:00 PM. The subsequent IPRC/ISRO date-extension notice changes two specific deadlines:
| Candidate action | Current deadline | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Submit a new online application | 24 October 2026, 5:00 PM IST | New registrations/applications are accepted until this time, not until 29 October. |
| Remit the online application fee | 29 October 2026, 5:00 PM IST | Even people who had already registered but could not pay may complete the fee by this date. |
The second date is not permission to submit a fresh application on 25–29 October. The notice is limited to application submission and fee remittance. No postal application, emailed CV or printed application submission is required; in fact the original instructions reject those modes. Use the live IPRC application portal and confirm payment status through its official receipt facility.
Cutoff caution: Section 3 and the final important-dates section of the 10-page original expressly state 5 October 2026 for age reckoning, acquiring prescribed qualifications and experience. The one-page extension does not expressly move that eligibility reference date to 24 October. Elsewhere the old notice also calls 5 October the "closing date", creating a potential interpretive issue once the closing date moves. For an applicant whose birthday, first-class diploma, ITI/NAC award or fifth year of Cook experience falls between 6 and 24 October, do not assume either a later eligibility date or an automatic disqualification without official clarification. Ask IPRC through career@iprc.gov.in and preserve the reply. This article uses the expressly printed 5 October reference, identifying the unresolved question rather than inventing a corrigendum.
2. The exact 22-seat matrix: category totals before assumptions
| Code | Designation / discipline | Vacancies | Vertical reservation | Horizontal overlap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 | Technical Assistant – Automobile Engineering | 1 | OBC 1 | — |
| 61 | Technical Assistant – Mechanical | 3 | UR 1, OBC 1, ST 1 | — |
| 62 | Technical Assistant – Electronics & Communication | 1 | UR 1 | — |
| 63 | Technician-B – Turner | 2 | UR 1, SC 1 | — |
| 64 | Technician-B – Fitter | 4 | OBC 3, EWS 1 | 1 Ex-serviceman within these 4 |
| 65 | Technician-B – Welder | 2 | UR 1, SC 1 | — |
| 66 | Technician-B – Machinist | 3 | UR 2, SC 1 | 1 PwBD (orthopaedic) within these 3 |
| 67 | Technician-B – Refrigeration & Air Conditioning | 1 | UR 1 | — |
| 68 | Technician-B – Electrician | 1 | EWS 1 | — |
| 70 | Cook-A | 1 | UR 1 | — |
| 71 | Fireman-A | 3 | UR 2, OBC 1 | 1 Ex-serviceman within these 3 |
| Total | 11 profiles | 22 | UR 10, OBC 6, SC 3, ST 1, EWS 2 | No extra seats |
The category trap: Post code 64 (Fitter) has zero UR seats despite being the single largest trade profile (4 seats); all four are OBC/EWS. Code 68 (Electrician) has only one EWS seat. Code 60 (Automobile diploma) has only one OBC seat. Treating the full 22 as open competition for every category would misinform applicants. Similarly, "one reserved for ex-servicemen" on Fitter and Fireman, and "one reserved for PwBD (Ortho)" on Machinist, are horizontal earmarks across the stated vertical matrix, not 3 additional positions. The precise intersections of vertical and horizontal categories are not fully identified in the vacancy table; do not manufacture them.
Seat concentration: Technician-B has 13/22 (59.1%) positions; the three diploma Technical Assistant codes have 5/22 (22.7%); Fireman has 3/22 (13.6%); Cook has 1/22 (4.5%). This is a more useful breakdown of competition pathways than describing all 22 as "technician" jobs.
3. Diploma applicants: 'First Class' plus the exact discipline
Codes 60–62 require a first-class diploma, not a generic engineering graduation. The actual advertised acceptable choices are deliberately narrow:
- 60 – Automobile: First Class Diploma in Automobile Engineering, the single OBC vacancy.
- 61 – Mechanical: First Class Diploma in Mechanical Engineering OR Production Engineering, three vacancies (UR/OBC/ST one each). Production Engineering is not a separate twelfth recruitment; it is an expressly allowed qualification for Mechanical code 61.
- 62 – Electronics & Communication: First Class Diploma in Electronics; Electronics & Communication; Electronics & Telecommunication; OR Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, one UR vacancy.
Do not automatically equate a different electronics or automotive discipline with these four prescribed alternatives. The general terms expressly say equivalent courses are not to be assumed eligible. "First Class" is what the notice says: the notification does not state one universal percentage to be inserted by a publisher, and it says rounding-off of marks is not permitted. Applicants should verify the class printed under their awarding institution's recognized classification rather than rely on an invented 60% threshold.
4. ITI and NCVT routes: Matric is necessary but not sufficient
Codes 63–68 require SSLC/SSC/Matric/10th pass AND the specified trade qualification. For each of the six trades, the second limb is ITI in the named trade with National Trade Certificate (NTC) from NCVT, OR National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) from NCVT. A generic ITI certificate in another trade, or Class 10 without the NCVT credential, must not be represented as sufficient.
| Technician-B code | Exact trade | Vacancies | Candidate-specific detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| 63 | Turner | 2 | One UR and one SC; no other trade substitutes for Turner. |
| 64 | Fitter | 4 | Three OBC, one EWS; one Ex-SM earmark lies within this four-seat allocation. |
| 65 | Welder | 2 | One UR and one SC. |
| 66 | Machinist | 3 | Two UR and one SC; one orthopaedic PwBD overlap within the three. |
| 67 | Refrigeration & Air Conditioning | 1 | Only one UR seat, and the NCVT trade must match Refrigeration & Air Conditioning. |
| 68 | Electrician | 1 | EWS only in the advertised vertical allocation. |
The term horizontal reservation describes the way the special-category earmark is accounted for in the same vacancy total. It does not mean a PwBD candidate is automatically qualified for any Machinist job; the prescribed functional requirements, certificate rules and exact trade must all be checked.
5. Cook-A: evidence of five years is the real barrier
Code 70 (one UR seat) requires Matric/10th plus five years' experience as a Cook in a well-established hotel or canteen. This is not a 10th-pass-only kitchen opening. The experience certificate must be issued by the qualifying hotel/canteen, and produced during the skill test. The employer has explicitly ruled out experience certificates issued by individual persons. Therefore, a person with informal home-cooking experience or a private personal reference should not assume it meets the announced documentary test. The skill test is job-related; plan to demonstrate institutional cooking and kitchen equipment knowledge.
6. Fireman-A: paperwork can stop the application before the PET
Code 71 has three positions (UR 2, OBC 1) and one Ex-SM horizontal earmark. The basic upper-age limit is 25 years, unlike the 35 years for codes 60–68 and 70, all originally reckoned against 5 October 2026. The candidate must hold Matric/10th and meet detailed medical/physical criteria. Crucially, the prescribed Preliminary Medical Examination (PME) Certificate, Annexure A, must be scanned and uploaded with the online application, not first arranged after the written exam. The notice also requires producing it during the subsequent skill-test process.
The PME issuer must be a Government Medical Officer (Allopathy), not below the rank of Assistant Civil Surgeon, and the document's validity is six months. The applicant then faces qualifying written, two-stage Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and detailed medical evaluation, rather than an ordinary trade demonstration.
Examples of original Fireman physical thresholds (not universal thresholds for other posts):
| Criterion | Men: general | Men: specified Gorkha/Hill Tribe/SC/ST group | Women and transgender |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum height | 165 cm | 160 cm | 155 cm |
| Minimum weight | 50 kg | 46 kg | 43 kg |
| BMI | 18–28 | 18–28 | 18–28 |
| Minimum chest at expiration / inspiration | 81 / 86 cm | 76 / 81 cm | Not applicable |
| Distant eyesight | 6/6 without glasses in each eye | 6/6 without glasses in each eye | 6/6 without glasses in each eye |
The original further requires normal hearing and numerous medical standards; these examples are not the complete medical clearance checklist. For PET, men up to 40 years have a 1,500-metre run in 7 minutes, while women/transgender up to 40 have 800 metres in 4 minutes. For candidates above 40 who are otherwise entitled to apply through an applicable relaxation, the corresponding time windows are 8 minutes and 5 minutes. Those age-over-40 norms do not create a general right for everyone above Fireman's ordinary age limit to apply.
Stage 2 includes hands-only rope climbing, carrying a human dummy, long jump and a 100-metre run. Example standards for applicants up to 40: men's rope 5 metres, women's/transgender 4.5 metres; dummy carry 25 metres (60 kg for men within 60 seconds; 50 kg for women/transgender within 75 seconds); long jump 3.8 metres/3.5 metres; 100 metres in 15/17 seconds. The published table gives different limits for above-40 eligible candidates. Only the long jump allows three attempts; other individual events get one. Spiked running shoes are disallowed. Every event must be qualified. Selected Fireman-A staff must stay in essential staff quarters at IPRC under the notified condition.
7. The written examination is not one common 'ISRO test'
| Group | Written questions / time | Negative marks per wrong answer | Skill-stage treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical Assistant, codes 60–62 | 80 MCQ / 90 min | −0.33 | Curriculum-based 100-mark skill test: general qualifying standard 50; eligible category-reserved standard 40. |
| Technician-B, codes 63–68 | 80 MCQ / 90 min | −0.33 | Same qualifying skill-test pattern with notified category-specific standards. |
| Cook-A, code 70 | 100 MCQ / 120 min | −0.25 | 100-mark practical skill test: 60 to qualify. |
| Fireman-A, code 71 | 100 MCQ / 120 min | −0.25 | Two-stage PET and detailed medical, not an 80-question technician test. |
For the 80-mark papers, the advertised written qualifying threshold is 32/80 for UR and 24/80 for candidates in reserved categories where the relevant post itself is reserved for their category. The notification separately directs that EWS applicants are held to UR selection standards. Treating 24/80 as a general score target for every SC/ST/OBC candidate regardless of code, or for EWS, is inaccurate.
The written-test marks decide final merit, subject to passing the relevant skill/PET and medical stages. Practical/skill-test scores are qualifying, not added to written marks. In a written-score tie, notified academic marks are the tie-breaker. For diploma/ITI codes, written qualifiers are shortlisted for skills ordinarily in a 1:5 ratio, with at least 10 candidates per post; for Fireman, after written and PME checks, the printed skill/PET shortlisting ratio is 1:50. These are procedural screening rules, not guarantees that a particular number will appear.
Written centres are Tirunelveli and Chennai; choose carefully because the application instructions say the centre choice cannot be changed later. Codes 60–62 use English/Hindi papers; codes 63–68 and 70–71 use Tamil/Hindi/English. The test language is distinct from the language of this article. Past IPRC question papers and keys are linked on the official IPRC careers website, useful for practice, but earlier years do not change the 2026 prescribed syllabus.
8. Fee math: the initial payment and the likely net fee are different
Every applicant must pay initially; this is not a blanket fee waiver at the application stage. ISRO's refund policy is contingent on actually appearing in the written test:
| Applied post group | Pay initially per application | Women/SC/ST/Ex-SM/PwBD who attend written exam | Other candidates who attend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical Assistant, codes 60–62 | ₹750 | Full ₹750 refundable | ₹500 refundable; effective ₹250 before applicable bank charges |
| Technician-B, Cook-A, Fireman-A | ₹500 | Full ₹500 refundable | ₹400 refundable; effective ₹100 before applicable bank charges |
If the applicant does not attend the written examination, no fee refund is promised, irrespective of category. Applicable bank/payment charges may affect amounts. The refund requires accurate bank details and a bank-passbook front-page scan. Applying for two codes means two online applications and two initial fees. The subsequent date-extension notice allows fee payment through 29 October 2026 at 5 PM, including already-submitted forms that remain unpaid; it does not waive payment or modify the original refund conditions.
9. Pay levels: a ₹44,900 base is not ₹44,900 take-home
| Family | Codes | 7th CPC pay matrix: basic pay |
|---|---|---|
| Technical Assistant | 60–62 | Level 7: ₹44,900–₹1,42,400 |
| Technician-B | 63–68 | Level 3: ₹21,700–₹69,100 |
| Cook-A and Fireman-A | 70–71 | Level 2: ₹19,900–₹63,200 |
These are basic-pay ranges, not promised gross or in-hand salary. Admissible Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance, government housing and transport facilities, the notified National Pension System and other applicable service benefits change what a person actually receives. A candidate comparing a ₹19,900 Level-2 role with a ₹44,900 Level-7 role must not mistake the pay-matrix maximum for monthly starting pay. The original describes the posts as technically temporary yet likely to continue indefinitely; that statement is not a fixed-term contract expiry date or a guarantee of permanent employment.
10. File uploads, certificate scrutiny and final-submission mistakes
- Use the official IPRC online portal only. A valid, correctly typed email address is mandatory for future communication.
- The applicant's photo and blue-ink signature are required as JPEG files, each no more than 1 MB. The original gives a 7:2 signature aspect ratio, and asks for clearly visible facial features and signature.
- Credential scans are generally PDF/JPEG and no more than 1 MB per file under the advertised instruction. The required list differs by post: Diploma documents for 60–62, Matric plus relevant ITI certificates for 63–68, five-year Cook experience proof for 70, and Annexure A PME for 71.
- The notice specifically requests the bank passbook front-page image for the fee refund; omitting it can affect payment recovery even when the education documents are correct.
- Online applications cannot be edited after submission. Verify the post code, chosen centre, category, name, bank details and uploads before final confirmation.
- No application printout needs to be posted to IPRC. Originals, including the required NOC for relevant serving employees, are checked at the skill test or when called for. NOC failure can prevent skill-test participation.
- The requirements are for Indian nationals. Rounding of academic marks is not allowed, and the notification says unlisted course equivalence is not automatically accepted.
11. Decision checklist before paying
Diploma candidate: Choose only 60, 61 or 62 if the named discipline and first-class condition truly match. Code 61 admits Production Engineering, but an unrelated mechanical-adjacent diploma is not thereby admitted.
ITI candidate: Verify 10th plus the exact NCVT NTC/NAC route; inspect the post code's vertical reservation, particularly Fitter's OBC/EWS-only seats and Electrician's EWS-only seat. Do not count horizontal Ex-SM/PwBD earmarks as additional vacancies.
Cook candidate: Keep employer-issued evidence of five complete post-qualification/required years at a qualifying hotel/canteen; a letter from an individual is expressly excluded.
Fireman candidate: Determine 25-year ordinary upper limit under the advertised reference date, complete Annexure A PME before online submission, and evaluate eyesight, anthropometric, stamina and medical requirements before spending money or travel time.
All candidates: Register no later than 24 October 2026, 5 PM IST. Fee payment may continue until 29 October 2026, 5 PM IST. If your eligibility depends on something changing after 5 October, ask IPRC for a written clarification; a date-extension notice is not the same thing as a revised eligibility-cutoff notice.
Primary official records
- IPRC/RMT/2026/01 — full 10-page recruitment advertisement, dated 12 September 2026.
- IPRC one-page application and fee deadline extension: 24 October for application, 29 October for payment.
- IPRC current openings, application portal and Annexure A, which carries the live official links.
This is an analytical guide based on those published documents. Where a later extension leaves the original eligibility date unresolved, it says so explicitly rather than asserting a new rule.
