About this Recruitment
Recruitment-specific overview from the published record.
IREL Tradesman Trainee 2026: 131 jobs, but one trade and one unit per candidate
Advertisement CO/HRM/36/2026 is not a generic 131-seat apprentice drive. It invites eligible Indian nationals for regular-basis Tradesman Trainee recruitment across four skilled trades, followed by one year of paid training and a possible W-3-grade absorption on successful completion. The word "Trainee" matters: the advertised ₹34,200/month is the training stipend, while the ₹22,000–₹88,000 pay scale and illustrative ₹6.5 lakh annual CTC relate to potential subsequent regular appointment, not immediate trainee take-home.
The official notice originally schedules online registration from 19 October 2026 at 10:00 through 9 November 2026 at 18:00 IST. Its company careers listing dated 16 October also contains a later notice of a technical issue and postponed application-link activation. This discrepancy cannot be solved by inventing a new opening date. Candidates should rely on the live https://www.irel.co.in/careers employer notice before attempting the form.
1. Four trades, 131 vacancies — each trade is a separate competition
Chart: IREL 2026 Tradesman vacancy distribution by officially notified trade
| Advertised trade | Seats | Share of all 131 | Units where advertised |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitter | 93 | 70.99% | 6 |
| Electrician | 12 | 9.16% | 4 |
| Instrumentation | 6 | 4.58% | 3 |
| Attendant Operator (Chemical Plant) | 20 | 15.27% | 4 |
| Total | 131 | 100% | 6 distinct units |
Reading this chart correctly: Fitter makes up 93/131 or 70.99% of the advertised posts. This does not mean a fitter may apply at six units. The notice allows one trade and one unit per applicant, and unit-specific trade/category merit lists. The largest visible trade pool and the seats accessible under a single chosen unit are different quantities.
2. Posting geography and local vacancy concentration — a hidden choice in this form
| Unit named in the official notification | All-trade seats | Share of total |
|---|---|---|
| OSCOM, Chhatarpur, Odisha | 40 | 30.53% |
| Chavara, Kerala | 33 | 25.19% |
| Manavalakurichi, Tamil Nadu | 24 | 18.32% |
| Rare Earths Division (RED), Aluva, Kerala | 25 | 19.08% |
| REPM, Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh | 5 | 3.82% |
| RETTP, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh | 4 | 3.05% |
| Total | 131 | 100% |
OSCOM's 40 seats are the largest unit pool, but those seats are spread across 32 Fitter, 4 Electrician and 4 Instrumentation, not AOCP. Chavara has 33, including 26 Fitter, 3 Electrician and 4 AOCP. RED Aluva contributes 25, 11 of which are AOCP. Manavalakurichi offers 24 but only for Fitter and Electrician. REPM and RETTP have small totals, and applying to those locations should be a deliberate decision, not an accidental default.
Initial posting versus later transfer: the application selects the relevant unit and the employer says it will not accept requests to change that initial posting. Nevertheless, service is transferrable to other IREL locations thereafter (notice p. 4). A nearby exam centre is not a right to a nearby unit.
3. Actual vertical category arithmetic, not an inferred quota chart
| Vertical reservation total across six units | UR | EWS | SC | ST | OBC-NCL | Sum |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Notified positions | 81 | 10 | 10 | 6 | 24 | 131 |
These are totals derived by adding the exact rows on pp. 3–4; only the unit-plus-trade row tells an individual candidate where a reserved vacancy exists. For example, Instrumentation's six seats are all UR, and a reserved-category applicant competing against UR seats is subject to UR merit standards without reserved-category marks/age relaxation for that vacancy (notice p. 6). The listed 5% compassionate appointment policy is a special company provision, not five percent to be added on top of 131.
The same document offers certain PwBD age/fee concessions while separately stating none of the four posts are suitable for PwBD. A fee exemption does not imply a suitable PwBD vacancy. Anyone affected should request official IREL clarification before paying or relying on an eligibility benefit.
4. Qualifications: ITI/NAC is not the entire story
| Trade | Qualifying education | Additional proof | Post-qualification work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitter | ITI/NAC — Fitter | Matching recognised trade course | 2 years in Fitter |
| Electrician | ITI/NAC — Electrician | Valid statutory Electrician licence | 2 years in Electrician |
| Instrumentation | ITI/NAC — Instrumentation | Matching trade credential | 2 years in Instrumentation |
| AOCP | ITI/NAC — Attendant Operator (Chemical Plant) OR 12th Science with Chemistry and 50% aggregate | If using 12th route, stream, subject and aggregate are material | 2 years in chemical/allied process operations |
Do not replace "post-qualification experience" with "any industry work". Work experience counts from the qualifying education as required, with apprenticeship training under the Apprenticeship Act 1961 explicitly countable and relevant on-the-job training. Teaching or Research Fellowship is expressly excluded. For IREL regular-roll internal candidates, the special academic route is SSC with four years in the relevant trade/operation, not ordinary open-to-all Class 10 eligibility. Courses must be full-time/regular and officially recognised. Degree/trade equivalence and major/minor specialisation need the documentary certificates described in the PDF.
5. Selection and test: why a good total CBT score may still fail
Official CBT: 150 objective questions, 2 hours — not a generic ITI paper
| CBT component | Questions | Marks | Official subject scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section I — Professional Knowledge | 100 | 100 | Relevant advertised trade/discipline |
| Section II — General Ability | 50 | 50 | General Knowledge, Logical Reasoning, Numerical Ability and English |
| Total | 150 | 150 | 120 minutes, one sitting |
Scoring: +1 per correct answer; zero negative marks for incorrect answers; no marks for unattempted questions. The paper is bilingual (Hindi/English), with the English version governing where the Hindi text contains a typo. IREL may withdraw defective questions during evaluation.
Crucial qualifying rule — each section separately: UR/EWS require at least 50/100 in Section I AND 25/50 in Section II. SC/ST/OBC-NCL require 45/100 AND 22.5/50, subject to advertised reservation/UR-standard conditions and any applicable IREL rounding instructions if published later. These numeric requirements are derived exactly as percentages of each section, not published merit cut-offs or guaranteed selection scores. A candidate with 115 total marks could still miss eligibility by falling below the required mark in one section. 45% of 50 = 22.5 mathematically; IREL has not explained any rounding convention in this advertisement.
The notification does not give separate General Knowledge versus Reasoning versus Quantitative versus English question counts, nor issue a chapter-weight table for Professional Knowledge. Do not claim an invented 15/15/10/10 split or an 'official detailed Fitter syllabus' where none is attached.
Official CBT exam centres (tentative): Mumbai/Nagpur; Bhubaneswar/Berhampur; Thiruvananthapuram ('Trivandrum')/Kochi; Bhopal/Indore; Chennai/Nagercoil; Visakhapatnam ('Vishakhapatnam')/Vijayawada. Two centre preferences may be entered; the company may allocate or change a centre. A CBT city is not the permanent posting location. The dates, final centre allotment, reporting time and CBT admit-card release have not yet been published (PDF pp. 7–8).
Stage after CBT: qualifying skill then CBT-only final merit
After CBT: Only candidates who qualify the prescribed Section-I and Section-II standards are considered for the qualifying Skill/Trade Test. IREL states a 1:5 call ratio, five CBT-qualified candidates per vacancy in merit order. This is a shortlisting ratio, not a promise that all eligible applicants will be called. The company may raise minimum screening standards to control numbers.
Skill Test: Trade Test or Computer Proficiency Test as applicable, according to the competent authority. Qualifying only; failing it excludes the candidate irrespective of CBT marks. No skill-test marks are added to final merit. The notice does not publish trade-wise practical exercises, skill-test duration or numerical qualifying score: they remain to be announced by IREL.
Merit is unit-wise, trade-wise and category-wise, based on CBT marks among skill-qualified candidates. Original-document verification takes place before offer letters: prescribed ITI/NAC or valid alternative proof, relevant experience certificates, identity/age, category claims, a valid Electrician licence when applicable, and NOC/relieving evidence for existing government/PSU personnel. Selection remains subject to IREL medical fitness, character/antecedent and experience verification. Unit-wise wait lists may be valid for one year, but their publication dates, individual ranks and actual cut-offs are not announced.
Worked qualifying-floor check (calculated from the notice): A UR/EWS candidate scoring 70/100 professional plus 20/50 general has 90/150 total, but is not eligible for the next stage, because Section II misses its 25/50 requirement. A reserved candidate competing for an available relevant reserved seat scoring 45/100 plus 23/50 clears the mathematical 45% threshold in each section, subject to how IREL handles the fractional Section-II floor. These examples describe minimum eligibility, not actual selection cut-offs.
No interview, negative-mark penalty, 90-minute test or 100-MCQ-only CBT should be fabricated for this advertisement. It prescribes a two-section CBT and a qualifying skill test. Trade-specific practical tasks are not enumerated by the employer in this publication.
6. Salary reality: ₹34,200 stipend versus W-3 after training
| Stage | What is explicitly notified | Candidate interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| One-year Trainee | ₹34,200 consolidated per month | Stipend for training; not ₹6.5 lakh CTC |
| During training: HRA | Conditional, on ₹22,000 W-3 minimum pay at the applicable place's HRA rate if bachelor company accommodation not provided | No universal exact HRA figure follows from this notice |
| After successful training | May be absorbed as Tradesman W-3 | Subject to success/policy; not guaranteed from application alone |
| W-3 basic pay scale | ₹22,000–₹88,000 | Scale, not initial ₹88,000 take-home |
| Approximate post-absorption CTC | ₹6.5 lakh/year using 20% HRA for a Y-class city | Illustrative later total employer cost, varies with actual posting |
The company also mentions possible benefits including medical coverage and post-superannuation benefits according to the terms applicable at the stage of employment. Do not count these as the first-year consolidated stipend, or use ₹6.5 lakh / 12 as the actual monthly bank salary for a selected trainee.
7. Fees: the 'exempt' category still pays ₹354
| Applicant category | Application portion | Processing portion | Total payable | Refund |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UR / EWS / OBC-NCL | ₹472 | ₹354 | ₹826 | No |
| SC / ST / PwBD / ESM / Women / eligible IREL internal employees | ₹0 (exempt) | ₹354 | ₹354 | No |
Both amounts are inclusive of the relevant GST as shown in the advertisement. A candidate exempt from the application portion is not exempt from the processing portion. Neither payment is refundable. PwBD applicants must not interpret a fee concession as a declaration that a vacancy has been notified suitable for them (notice pp. 6 and 10).
8. Age relaxation that cannot be reduced to one uniform number
| Category or special class | Notified relaxation over normal 35-year upper limit |
|---|---|
| UR/EWS | Nil |
| OBC-NCL | 3 years |
| SC/ST | 5 years |
| PwBD | 10/13/15 based on category; suitability caveat applies |
| Regular central/state government/PSU/autonomous-body employees | 5 years as specified |
| IREL regular-roll internal candidates | 10 years |
| J&K domicile for specified 1980–1989 period | 5 or 8 or 10 years, per category |
| Ex-servicemen | Service-linked relaxation plus 3 years, subject to rules |
Maximum permitted age after relaxation: 50 years. Category benefits against an unreserved-only vacancy are not automatic: the notice explicitly withholds age/marks relaxation when OBC/SC/ST candidates compete for a post without their respective reserved seat (notice p. 6). Eligibility cut-off: 9 November 2026 unless revised by the employer.
9. Apply accurately, then preserve the records
- Check the official IREL Careers listing for this exact number CO/HRM/36/2026 and any revised activation date; do not mistake the earlier CO/HRM/35/2026 executive recruitment for the tradesman advertisement.
- Register with a working mobile and email, and verify the separate OTPs. Choose one unit and one trade carefully.
- Upload a recent white-background photograph (3.5 × 4.5 cm, JPG/JPEG, 100–200 KB, 200 dpi) and black-ink signature scan (JPG/JPEG, 80–150 KB), plus necessary category/education evidence. The employer may reject improper documents.
- Complete qualifications, experience, declarations, category and posting details, preview, submit, then pay ₹826 or ₹354 as applicable only through the official payment gateway. Once submitted, the application cannot be edited; a later same-trade application replaces the earlier one subject to portal terms, but you cannot submit competing trades.
- Save the final application PDF, registration/sequence number and payment receipt. IREL expressly says printed forms need not be posted. Later shortlisted applicants must produce originals including age, Aadhaar, ITI/NAC/eligible 12th documents, service certificates, pay slips and NOC as applicable.
Document gate: the OBC-NCL certificate must be issued on/after 1 April 2026 and the EWS income/asset certificate must be valid for 2026–27. Shortlisted candidates may not be allowed to sit the skill test without the required document proofs. Exam/skill communications are expected via email or IREL website; skill-test travel reimbursement differs from the no-TA-for-CBT rule (PDF p. 9).
Application portal caveat (20 October 2026): Although the PDF originally schedules registration from 19 October, the official IREL Careers entry states that the application link will be made live on a revised date because of a technical issue. The PDF still prints 9 November, 18:00, but applicants must check the employer for a revised live opening date and any corrigendum; no amended deadline was established in the materials reviewed.
10. Recruitment lifecycle: announced stages and awaited updates

|---|---|---|
| Notification | CO/HRM/36/2026 and the four trade/unit tables | Published |
| Applications | Online registration, fee and documents; notified deadline 9 Nov 2026, 18:00 | Employer reports technical delay in activating the application link; check its careers page for a revised opening |
| CBT | 150 MCQs in 120 minutes; separate Section I and II pass standards; no negative marking | Date, allotted centre and reporting time awaited |
| Skill Test / Trade Test | CBT-qualified candidates shortlisted 1:5; passing the skill stage is compulsory | Individual trade tasks and test date awaited |
| Documents | Original education, experience, identity and category evidence, where applicable | To be checked before offer letters |
| Merit and wait-list | Unit-wise, trade-wise, category-wise CBT merit among skill-qualified candidates; conditional wait-list valid one year | Candidate list and result publication date awaited |
| Medical / verification | Company medical fitness, experience checks and character/antecedents verification | Before appointment |
| Training and subsequent grade | One year on ₹34,200/month stipend; possible subsequent W-3 absorption | Subject to successful training and company rules |
CBT passing thresholds are qualifying standards, not the marks of the last selected candidate. The advertisement does not announce a hall-ticket release date, answer-key publication, result list or final cut-off. Follow the official IREL careers page for subsequent notices.

The exam covers Professional Knowledge in the advertised Instrumentation discipline, but this notice does not assign topic-wise marks or publish a defined list of instruments/practicals for the skill test.

Regular/full-time recognised qualifications, relevant on-the-job and qualifying apprenticeship experience are governed by the notice; teaching/research fellowship does not count.
For the full marking and application rules, see the recruitment overview and Exam / Syllabus directories. The official IREL careers notice governs changes.

Notified pathway: two-hour, 150-MCQ CBT (100 relevant trade questions + 50 General Knowledge/Reasoning/Numerical Ability/English), followed by a qualifying skill/trade test for CBT-merit shortlisted candidates (1:5). The CBT has no negative marking and requires the prescribed minimum in each section, not merely in the combined total.
The Professional Knowledge paper is for AOCP/chemical-plant operations, not the Fitter or Electrician trade paper. Specific topic names, unit-operation weightages and skill-test practical tasks are not set out in this advertisement.

Eligibility & Qualification
Recruitment-level qualifications and eligibility rules. Post-specific conditions are also shown inside each vacancy card.
Indian nationals only
IREL Section 14(a) invites only Indian nationals for these regular-basis Tradesman Trainee positions.
Official ITI/NAC trade qualification, AOCP 12th alternative and internal exception
Ordinary routes: Fitter/Electrician/Instrumentation must possess the exact trade ITI/NAC. Electrician also requires a valid statutory licence. AOCP also permits +2 Science with Chemistry and >=50% aggregate. IREL regular-roll internal candidates: SSC plus four years experience in relevant trade/operations. All regular/full-time recognised courses and evidence of specialisation/equivalence as applicable (pp.2–3).
Internal-only SSC alternative: current regular-roll IREL employees
The official notice p.2 separately permits IREL INTERNAL candidates (regular-roll company employees) with SSC and four years of relevant trade/operation experience. This exception is not a general Class 10 eligibility for outside applicants, and cannot be represented as an unconditional 10th-pass qualification filter. Relevant current-employee status and experience must be proved.
At least two years relevant post-qualification industrial work
Required after the relevant qualification in corresponding Fitter/Electrician/Instrumentation trade or AOCP chemical/allied process operation; apprenticeship under the Apprentices Act 1961 and relevant on-the-job training may count. Teaching/research fellowship does not. Internal SSC route is four years relevant experience (p.2).
Apply for one trade AND one unit only
IREL p.4 requires one unit/location and one trade/discipline per candidate. Applying for more than one post/discipline results in summary rejection. Multiple same-post registrations are governed by last/higher application sequence rules. The unit selected determines trade/category selection list.
Sectional CBT qualification and skill-test gate
150 questions in two hours, Section I 100 trade questions + Section II 50 general questions, no negative marks. UR/EWS >=50% in EACH section, SC/ST/OBC-NCL >=45% in EACH section where admissible. Skill test in 1:5 CBT-merit shortlist is qualifying; final unit/trade/category merit uses CBT marks alone (pp.6–7).
Pre-employment fitness, antecedents and experience checks
Selected applicants must pass IREL medical examination, character/antecedents and experience verification before joining; provisional selection/skill qualification does not guarantee appointment (p.8).
One-year training, possible later W-3 absorption and all-India transfer
The first year is paid training with stipend ₹34,200 monthly. On successful completion trainees MAY be absorbed as Tradesman W-3, scale ₹22,000–₹88,000, as per company policy. Initial posting follows chosen eligible unit, but subsequent transfer to any company office/unit/project in India is possible (p.4).
PwBD application concession versus no suitable positions caveat
The notice includes PwBD age/fee concessions, yet Section 7(k) says none of the advertised posts suitable for PwBD. Do not claim there are notified eligible PwBD seats without a separate official clarification (pp.5–6).

Tradesman Trainee (Fitter) — CBT, qualifying trade test and unit merit
Fitter: selection for this post only
(1) Apply and establish eligibility: ITI/NAC in Fitter; at least two years of relevant post-qualification Fitter trade experience in a reputed industrial establishment. Choose one unit from the 6 advertised Fitter locations. Where applicable, the electrician statutory licence, special IREL internal SSC-plus-four-years rule and category evidence must be supported by original documents.
(2) Computer Based Test: 150 objective questions, 120 minutes, Hindi/English. Section I: 100 relevant trade questions. Section II: 50 on GK, reasoning, numerical ability and English. +1 per right answer, no negative marking. Each section must be qualified separately: UR/EWS at least 50%, SC/ST/OBC-NCL at least 45% where entitled. For a 50-question section, 45% equals 22.5 marks; with whole-point scoring, 23 correct answers are needed unless IREL changes/cancels questions.
(3) Merit shortlisting, then skill/trade test: Written-qualified candidates are shortlisted approximately 1:5 per vacancy in order of CBT merit. The subsequent trade/skill test is qualifying only. Its score does not count in the final ranking; failing the test excludes a candidate even with high CBT marks. No trade-specific practical-task list or pass-mark number is specified in the notice.
(4) Fitter unit-wise final merit: Only skill-qualified candidates are ranked on CBT marks within the unit, trade and reservation category they selected. For this post, the advertised category totals are UR 49, EWS 8, SC 9, ST 6, OBC-NCL 21. Original documents are verified before offer. Selection is subject to pre-employment medical fitness, experience/character checks and a one-year training appointment; subsequent W-3 absorption is conditional.
Why this post differs: The headline of 93 includes 32 at OSCOM, 26 at Chavara and 20 at Manavalakurichi; only one seat each is advertised at REPM and RETTP. A candidate cannot enter a common competition for all 93 seats: one unit must be chosen in the application.

For this post, the advertised category totals are UR 11, EWS 1, SC 0, ST 0, OBC-NCL 0. Original documents are verified before offer. Selection is subject to pre-employment medical fitness, experience/character checks and a one-year training appointment; subsequent W-3 absorption is conditional.
Why this post differs: The licence is a separate essential condition: ITI/NAC and experience alone do not satisfy this advertisement. The 12 seats comprise 11 UR and one EWS; there is no OBC-NCL/SC/ST reserved Electrician seat in the notified unit table. Candidates competing for UR seats are subject to UR standards under the advertisement.
