Eight NIE Scientist Seats: PhD Experience Credit, Pharm-D Route and 75th-Percentile Test
Eight ICMR-NIE Chennai direct-recruitment Scientist B/C/D seats across seven profiles: two D, two C, four B. The decisive difference is degree-to-experience credit: PhD four years, MD/MS three and MPH/M.Tech zero under stated conditions, while B jobs list no mandatory extra years. D/C pay Levels 12/11, B Level 10; essential MBBS, biomedical Master/Pharm-D or B.V.Sc & AH vary by role. Research-methods CBT, if held, is qualifying at the 75th percentile. Apply online by 26 Nov 2026, 5:30 PM; EWS, women, SC/ST and PwD fee-exempt.

About this Recruitment
Recruitment-specific overview from the published record.
Eight seats, three scientist grades and seven distinct eligibility profiles
ICMR's National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), Chennai is hiring eight scientists through advertisement ICMR/NIE/01/2026-RPCell. These are direct-recruitment scientific positions, not an ICMR short-term research-project contract. The notice specifies an all-India transfer liability, even though the advertised vacancies are based at NIE, Chennai. An applicant should therefore distinguish the initial institute from a lifetime guarantee of a Chennai posting.
The notification groups eight seats into seven role profiles: Scientist-D Medical and Non-Medical; Scientist-C Medical and Medical–Microbiology; Scientist-B Medical (two seats), Non-Medical Disease Modelling and Veterinary. The essential degree and experience conditions differ across the medical, biomedical-science, disease-modelling and veterinary profiles. Applicants should compare the precise entry requirements for the selected post rather than relying on a general Scientist B/C/D eligibility summary.
| Scientist profile | Seats | Required degree | Mandatory experience | Pay matrix (basic) | Ordinary upper age |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| D — Medical | 1 | MCI/NMC-recognised MBBS or equivalent | 8 years | Level 12, ₹78,800–₹2,09,200 | 45 |
| D — Non-Medical | 1 | Biomedical-sciences-related Master's or UGC/PCI-recognised Pharm-D | 8 years | Level 12, ₹78,800–₹2,09,200 | 45 |
| C — Medical | 1 | MCI/NMC-recognised MBBS or equivalent | 4 years | Level 11, ₹67,700–₹2,08,700 | 40 |
| C — Medical, Microbiology | 1 | MCI/NMC-recognised MBBS or equivalent | 4 years | Level 11, ₹67,700–₹2,08,700 | 40 |
| B — Medical | 2 | MCI/NMC-recognised MBBS or equivalent | No fixed additional years specified | Level 10, ₹56,100–₹1,77,500 | 35 |
| B — Non-Medical, Disease Modelling | 1 | Biomedical-sciences-related Master's or UGC/PCI-recognised Pharm-D | No fixed additional years specified | Level 10, ₹56,100–₹1,77,500 | 35 |
| B — Veterinary | 1 | VCI-recognised B.V.Sc & AH | No fixed additional years specified | Level 10, ₹56,100–₹1,77,500 | 35 |
| Total | 8 | | | | |
These are 7th CPC pay-matrix ranges, not promised take-home salaries. Actual allowances, deductions, posting-related entitlements and applicable service rules are separate from the advertised basic scale. The notice gives no fixed in-hand figure.
Why the experience-credit clause can change eligibility
The most important decision point is not the salary headline. Page 2 recognises a PhD as four years' experience and an MD/MS or equivalent as three years' experience, subject to its stated qualification/experience conditions. Conversely, MPH and M.Tech do not count as experience credits under this clause. This is not a judgment about the academic value of those degrees; it is the particular recruitment's experience-accounting rule.
The document also explicitly says time spent obtaining the minimum essential educational qualification cannot be counted towards experience. Therefore the advertised four- and three-year academic credits should not be read as permission to double-count a period already occupied by the essential qualifying course. Assess the qualifying route and actual research-and-development experience evidence together.
| Applicant situation | Practical consequence under this notice |
|---|---|
| Scientist-D applicant with qualifying PhD | Check the four-year degree credit against the eight-year experience requirement and avoid overlapping periods |
| Scientist-C medical applicant with recognised MD/MS | Three-year credit may matter against a four-year experience threshold; the rest still needs valid evidence or applicable authorised treatment |
| Applicant counting an MPH or M.Tech as work experience | The notice expressly allows no experience credit merely for that degree |
| PhD/MD/MS candidate who lacks the specified essential degree | An experience credit does not replace MBBS, related Master's/Pharm-D or B.V.Sc & AH as applicable |
ICMR permits relaxation of qualifications/experience for an exceptionally meritorious applicant only with the Director General's approval and recorded reasons. It is not an automatic waiver that an applicant can assume in advance.
Four role-specific eligibility and reservation distinctions
1. The Microbiology-labelled Scientist-C post still specifies MBBS
The essential qualification for Scientist-C (Medical–Microbiology) is an MCI/NMC-recognised MBBS or equivalent plus four years' experience. Its microbiology, immunology, immunogenetics, molecular biology and next-generation sequencing background appears under desirable research experience, while MD/MS, MPH or a relevant biomedical PhD are listed as desirable qualifications. Do not change these preferred credentials into a mandatory MD Microbiology requirement.
2. Pharm-D is an express alternative for two non-medical profiles
The Scientist-D Non-Medical and Scientist-B Non-Medical (Disease Modelling) routes accept either a Master's in a subject related to Biomedical Sciences or a Pharm-D recognised by UGC/PCI. The notice does not say that Pharm-D independently supplies the separate eight years needed for Scientist-D. Nor does it replace the veterinary-specific B.V.Sc & AH requirement.
3. Disease modelling and veterinary expertise are desirable research signals
For Scientist-B Disease Modelling, the preferred background is infectious-disease modelling research shown through peer-reviewed publications, scientific talks, reports or grants. For Scientist-B Veterinary, the preferred area is veterinary epidemiology/public health with similar evidence. No additional mandatory years are given for either B post. Publication evidence makes an application stronger for shortlisting but does not invent a minimum publication count.
4. Four higher-grade seat categories are not printed in the PDF
The vacancy matrix explicitly reserves the two Scientist-B Medical seats as UR 1 + SC 1, the Scientist-B Disease Modelling seat as UR 1 and the Scientist-B Veterinary seat as EWS 1. These already total four seats. The advertisement does not print a category split for the other four Scientist-C/D vacancies. Candidates should consult official ICMR updates for any subsequently specified reservations.
| Profile with stated category split | UR | SC | EWS | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B Medical | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
| B Non-Medical (Disease Modelling) | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| B Veterinary | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Explicitly classified seats | 2 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
The four Scientist-C/D seats have no printed category distribution in this notice. They should not be treated as unreserved solely because the category breakdown is absent. Apply category-related eligibility and fee concessions as stated in official ICMR instructions.
CBT: the minimum is the 75th percentile, not 75 marks out of 100
The Selection Committee may choose a computer-based multiple-choice test, an interview, or both. When a CBT is conducted, it assesses research-methods understanding, is stated to be qualifying, and has a 75th-percentile minimum. Percentile ranks candidates relative to other scores; it is not automatically an instruction to score 75% correct. No total CBT questions, negative-marking formula or interview weighting is published in this advertisement.
The first screen checks minimum age, essential degrees and required experience. If too many applicants are eligible for interview, ICMR may tighten shortlisting using suitable experience, research relevance or higher qualifications, according to the competent authority. Consequently, satisfying minimum criteria does not guarantee being invited to interview. Research outputs should substantiate experience, not be presented as a separate compulsory numerical cutoff.
Application fees: EWS and women are specifically exempt
The advertised non-refundable online fee is ₹1,500, but SC, ST, women, PwD and EWS candidates are exempt. This is unusual enough to check before paying: EWS is explicitly exempt, while OBC is not separately mentioned among fee-exempt categories. Fee liability and post reservation are different questions—an exemption does not imply a matching reserved vacancy for every post.
Payment and registration are through the official ICMR recruitment portal. The PDF mentions Net Banking, Credit Card and Debit Card, not cash, postal orders or offline demand drafts. A non-exempt applicant's application is complete only after the applicable online payment succeeds.
Application window and eligibility cut-off
ICMR's official recruitment announcement specifies that registration starts 15 October 2026. Online applications close at 5:30 PM IST on 26 November 2026, the date used for checking the prescribed qualifications and other eligibility conditions. Complete registration, evidence uploads and any applicable fee payment before the announced closing time; the notice does not provide a later submission grace period.
Seven printed role profiles, but six entrypoints on ICMR's live portal
The official recruitment portal currently presents six NIE application entries rather than seven. In particular, its Scientist-C link is explicitly labelled “Scientist-C (Medical, Medical-Microbiology)(ICMR-NIE)” and serves both printed Scientist-C medical profiles together. The advertisement lists general Medical and Medical–Microbiology as separate one-seat profiles, while the portal presents a combined Scientist-C application entry. Candidates should follow the portal's combined entry and identify the relevant profile using its instructions.
The other five NIE application choices on the current portal are Scientist-D Medical, Scientist-D Non-Medical, Scientist-B Medical, Scientist-B Non-Medical (Disease Modelling) and Scientist-B Veterinary. The portal also shows a separate ICMR-NINE recruitment with a different notice and 16 November deadline; do not mistakenly submit that application for ICMR-NIE Chennai.
Applying online: role choice, supporting records and final submission
- Read the correct Scientist-B/C/D profile and establish the exact essential degree and experience path before registering.
- Visit ICMR recruitment, register accurately and select the notice ICMR/NIE/01/2026-RPCell.
- Upload required qualification evidence from Matric onward, mark sheets, age proof, relevant research/experience records, self-attested certificates, appropriate professional registration where required, category documents when claimed, photograph and signature in the portal's prescribed format.
- Verify the exact applicant name, date of birth, category, degree spelling and claimed work period before submission. The notification says these details are not normally editable afterward, and duplicate applications can lead to cancellation.
- Pay the fee online if not exempt; save the final confirmation and application printout. There is no routine requirement to post a hard copy merely to apply; a printout with evidence may be requested later.
Government/PSU/government-funded research employees must be able to produce the prescribed No Objection Certificate at personal discussion, including their employer's undertaking about relief within one month of appointment. Applicants are advised not to infer an immediate examination venue or published score cutoff from the initial vacancy notice.
Who should prioritise which profile?
Physicians should first compare the eight-year D and four-year C minimums with their own accepted post-qualification R&D record and available MD/MS credit. The B Medical vacancies have different competition and a printed UR/SC split; their notice does not impose the C/D minimum experience duration.
Biomedical research graduates and Pharm-D holders should examine Scientist-D Non-Medical versus B Disease Modelling. The shared qualifying degree alternative does not make the jobs identical: the former demands eight years of admissible experience, while the latter has its domain-specific modelling preference and no fixed extra years in the essential row.
Veterinary graduates should target the separate Scientist-B Veterinary route rather than shoehorning their B.V.Sc & AH into the Masters/Pharm-D description. Its one EWS seat is explicitly printed, but fee concessions and category consideration should be checked independently.
For any candidate, compare true eligibility, field evidence, all-India transfer readiness and final application-payment confirmation before investing in preparation. This is a research-cadre recruitment in which a published degree/experience rule and a qualifying test percentile can matter more than a broad 'scientist vacancy' headline.

Eligibility & Qualification
Recruitment-level qualifications and eligibility rules. Post-specific conditions are also shown inside each vacancy card.
Indian citizenship
Vacancy invitation explicitly limited to Indian citizens. Transfer liability across ICMR units is an employment condition, not a domicile requirement.
Scientist grade and specialty specify different compulsory degrees
Medical posts: NMC/MCI-recognised MBBS or equivalence; Non-Medical D and Disease Modelling B: biomedical-sciences-related Master OR UGC/PCI-recognised Pharm-D; Veterinary B: VCI-recognised B.V.Sc & AH. Desirable postgraduate degrees do not supersede mandatory role-specific entry degrees.
Only C/D have a fixed mandatory experience duration
Scientist-D requires eight years; Scientist-C four. Scientist-B roles show no numerical minimum extra years. Qualifying R&D experience must be documented and considered with approved PhD/MD/MS academic credits without double-counting minimum-qualification periods.
PhD 4 years; MD/MS 3 years; MPH/M.Tech zero credit
Official Notes 1 recognise a PhD as four years experience, an MD/MS or recognised equivalent as three; MPH/M.Tech shall not count as any experience. The time spent acquiring a minimum essential degree must not be counted toward experience.
CBT, if used, is qualifying at 75th percentile
ICMR may select via research-methods computer-based test, interview, or both. The CBT qualifying threshold is the 75th percentile rather than 75% correct, and the notice has no fixed test score or negative-marking rate.
