The Union Public Service Commission is conducting the Engineering Services Examination, 2027 under Examination Notice No. 02/2027-ENGG. for recruitment to engineering services and posts of the Government of India. The examination is a combined competitive selection covering four engineering categories: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
The notified vacancy figure is approximately 480 and is provisional. The Engineering Services Examination Rules, 2027 state that the tentative number of vacancies is specified in the Commission's Examination Notice and that reservation applies to SC, ST, OBC, EWS and eligible PwBD candidates in accordance with Government rules. Because UPSC has not published a final discipline-wise split of the approximately 480 vacancies, this recruitment record does not invent separate Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics & Telecommunication vacancy counts.
Candidates compete in one engineering category and, subject to eligibility, merit, preferences, vacancies and medical fitness, may be allocated to participating Group A or Group B engineering services/posts. The participating services include engineering positions under departments and organisations dealing with public works, roads, defence engineering, railways, water resources, telecommunications, power, survey and other Central Government technical functions.
The principal educational qualification is a recognised Degree in Engineering. The official rules also recognise specified equivalent professional engineering examinations and qualifications, including the prescribed Institution of Engineers, electronics/telecommunication and other recognised professional routes. Applicants must therefore check the exact qualification provision applicable to their selected engineering category and service preference in the official notice and rules.
The standard age requirement is 21 to below 30 years as on 1 January 2027. In practical date-of-birth terms, the rules specify that a candidate should have been born not earlier than 2 January 1997 and not later than 1 January 2006, subject to the notified relaxations. Upper-age relaxation applies to eligible reserved categories, specified Government employees, Ex-Servicemen and PwBD candidates under the Engineering Services Examination Rules, 2027.
The selection process has three stages. Stage I is the Engineering Services Preliminary Examination with two objective papers carrying 500 marks in total. Candidates qualifying Stage I may appear in Stage II, the Engineering Services Main Examination, which consists of two conventional engineering papers carrying a total of 600 marks. Candidates meeting the prescribed standard after the written stages may be called for Stage III, the Personality Test/Interview carrying 200 marks. Marks secured in all three stages contribute to final ranking and service allocation.
The online application window opened on 16 September 2026 and closes on 6 October 2026 at 6:00 PM. The Engineering Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2027 is scheduled for 31 January 2027. Applications are submitted through the UPSC online application system. Candidates should complete their UPSC registration and examination-specific application, upload the required documents and verify all claims before final submission because post-submission changes are governed by the restrictions stated in the official rules.
The application/examination fee is Rs. 200 for candidates required to pay the fee under the UPSC notice. Female candidates and candidates belonging to SC, ST and eligible PwBD categories are exempt from payment. Candidates should use the official UPSC notice and application portal for the latest instructions on fee payment, examination centres, documents, reservation certificates and application submission.
