From Nicobar Megapodes to Wild Cat Safeguards: 19 WII Research Seats Across Four Projects
WII October 2026 notice spans four distinct wildlife projects: 19 temporary seats across 14 role profiles, not 19 different job advertisements. Nine seats relate to hydropower/freshwater ecology, four to Nicobar Megapode and Leatherback turtles, and six to Dudhwa/Pakke-Eaglenest safeguards/community work. Role-specific Bachelor/Master/PhD routes, mandatory experience and NET/GATE-based pay (₹24,000–₹57,000 + HRA) determine suitability. Apply online by 1 November; ₹500 General vs ₹100 reserved/PC processing fee; max two role applications.

About this Recruitment
Recruitment-specific overview from the published record.
Nicobar Megapodes, Leatherback Turtles and Community Safeguards: 19 WII Research Seats
The October 2026 Wildlife Institute of India (WII) notice is best understood as four research projects sharing one recruitment window, not 19 interchangeable positions. The institute has advertised 19 seats across 14 distinct project–role profiles. Five of the 19 seats belong to just one aquatic-biodiversity Project Associate-I profile. Treating every vacancy as a separate notification, or assuming identical eligibility for all profiles, would misrepresent the official matrix.
The closing date is 1 November 2026 for online applications, after an announced 17 October opening. The notification does not give a specific closing hour; do not assume 5 PM or midnight. Applicants must use WII’s recruitment portal. The advertisement does not authorise sending a printed application as a substitute.
At a glance: which research field suits your qualifications?
| Project and field | Position profiles | Seats | What makes it different |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singoli Bhatwari hydropower biodiversity, Uttarakhand | 5 | 9 | Aquatic ecology, social survey, hydrological GIS and field assistant work |
| Nicobar Megapode movement and population genetics | 2 | 2 | Remote-island field logistics and research support |
| Leatherback turtle monitoring, Andaman & Nicobar | 1 | 2 | Nesting-beach ecology, satellite tagging and island fieldwork |
| Small-cat/leopard landscape conservation | 6 | 6 | Safeguards, Indigenous Peoples Plans, community capacity and camera-trap monitoring |
| Total | 14 | 19 | All included in the same October 2026 advertisement |
The nine hydropower-related seats amount to 9/19 (47.4%) of the total. Of those, five are for a single Project Associate-I aquatic-survey profile; they do not make five independent job types. Six seats are linked to different Dudhwa and Pakke–Eaglenest conservation/safeguard profiles, and four concern the Nicobar Megapode and Leatherback Turtle projects together. These are allocations by advertised research project, not caste-based reservation numbers.
Full position matrix: do not confuse seats, profiles or pay routes
The base amount shown below is the monthly advertised remuneration before the HRA component. For many associate roles WII prints two different base amounts depending on NET/GATE qualification; neither should be advertised as a guaranteed universal salary.

Who is actually eligible? Five different academic gateways
1. Freshwater ecology is not the same as community social research
01(1), Project Associate-II requires one of the precisely named Natural Sciences Master’s specialisations, followed by two years of experience after the Master’s. A two-year job before acquiring that qualifying postgraduate degree does not meet this post-degree wording. Ecological survey, hydrological modelling and e-flow assessments are desirable specialisation signals, not separate guaranteed marks.
01(2), aquatic Project Associate-I is the largest single profile, with five seats. Its mandatory academic baseline is a relevant Natural Sciences Master’s. The notice does not specify an additional fixed experience minimum here, even though aquatic biodiversity survey and data-analysis experience is desirable.
01(3), Project Associate-I (Social) accepts a Social Sciences Master’s such as Geography, Economics, Social Work or Anthropology. A zoology-only Master’s should not be treated as meeting this separate social-research route merely because both assignments belong to the same project.
01(4), Project Associate-I (Spatial analyst) provides two genuinely different postgraduate routes: a Master’s in Engineering/Technology in Remote Sensing & GIS/Geoinformatics, OR the specified Natural Sciences Master’s including remote sensing/GIS fields. The candidate-facing question here is the exact subject on the degree certificate and its match to the two official alternatives.
01(5), Project Assistant is a Bachelor’s-level science route across specified environmental, marine, life-science, agriculture and forestry subjects. A Master’s is desirable/preferred but is not an unconditional minimum, and published experience has no fixed minimum-year threshold for this profile.
2. Two Nicobar Megapode roles are not academically interchangeable
02(1), Administrative Assistant, accepts graduation in any recognised discipline. The notice gives preference to economics/communication exposure and asks for English and MS Excel proficiency. The job centres on logistics, stock registers and project accounts; a wildlife Master’s is not a notified prerequisite.
02(2), Project Assistant, needs a Bachelor’s in an explicitly stated relevant Science subject. It assists habitat/movement and population-genetics fieldwork with difficult remote-island logistics. The notice prefers a Master’s but does not require it. A general commerce graduate eligible for 02(1) must not assume eligibility for 02(2).
3. Leatherback turtle work is field-intensive, not a desk-only appointment
03(1) has two Project Assistant seats. Bachelor’s in the notified science disciplines is necessary. Duties include nesting beach surveys, beach dynamics, satellite tagging and genetic sampling. The notice says candidates from Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be preferred, not that these two seats constitute a formal domicile-reserved quota. That distinction is important for applicants from elsewhere in India.
4. Senior safeguard experts: PhD is a separate OR route
04(1) and 04(2) are two separate ₹57,000 + HRA Senior Project Associate profiles, one associated with Dudhwa and the other with Pakke–Eaglenest. For 04(1) the listed assignment is National PMU, Delhi / Dudhwa landscape; for 04(2) it is National PMU, Delhi / Pakke–Eaglenest landscape. These are stated location alternatives, not a candidate-selected posting guarantee. The essential paths are: four-year Natural Sciences Bachelor’s + four years post-degree research/scientific experience, OR Master’s + four years post-Master’s experience, OR a Doctoral Degree in Science. The advertisement states the PhD route separately; do not automatically graft the four-year experience requirement onto that independent alternative.
These are unusual conservation roles because success needs social and environmental safeguards, stakeholder consultation, Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), Indigenous Peoples Plans, livelihood restoration and grievance processes. Strong wildlife sampling credentials alone may not satisfy the practical role-fit demands identified as desirable.
5. Four community specialists require two years after the relevant degree
04(3) to 04(6) all carry a two-year relevant scientific/R&D-experience requirement after either the listed four-year Bachelor’s or the listed Master’s route. The essential fields cover relevant Natural Sciences; the actual role differentiator is the assignment. Capacity-development specialists (04(3)–04(4)) work with Eco-Development Councils and Community-Based Organisations; monitoring specialists (04(5)–04(6)) need community surveillance, camera traps, GPS and patrolling capabilities. Dudhwa and Pakke–Eaglenest assignments have separate role codes and should not be merged into one post profile.
WII salary: NET/GATE changes the pay base, not the number of seats
The paired salaries differ by ₹7,000/month for Project Associate-I (₹37,000 versus ₹30,000) and ₹9,000/month for Project Associate-II (₹42,000 versus ₹33,000). These are direct arithmetic differences in published base remuneration, excluding HRA, and are conditional on the NET/GATE distinction printed against the corresponding rows. Do not interpret the higher figure as automatically applicable to anyone holding only the required degree.
The Senior Project Associate figure ₹57,000 + HRA and Project Assistant figure ₹27,000 + HRA are project remuneration, not regular pay-level matrices. The notice does not supply an HRA percentage for each project or an in-hand calculation. Most project durations are one year, some described as likely extendable; “likely extended” is not a contractual guarantee. All positions are temporary for their advertised project periods.
Shortlisting is scored before the interview: why this matters
The institute may invite only the top ten shortlisted candidates per advertised project/position for online interviews. Selection is not an open walk-in or automatic interview for everybody satisfying the essential degree. WII publishes the following 50-mark screening frameworks:
| Broad category | Academic/relevance split | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Field/Lab/Project Assistant | Bachelor’s marks 25 + project specialisation relevance 25 | 50 |
| Project Associate-I | Master’s marks 25 + specialisation relevance 25 | 50 |
| Project Associate-II / Senior Project Associate and listed higher scientist grades | NET/JRF/WII-NET 5 + PG marks 25 + research/work experience 10 + publications 10 | 50 |
These are shortlisting scores, not an advertised final written-exam paper or proof of interview weightage. The experience, publications and relevance evidence uploaded now can change whether a candidate reaches the interview stage. A candidate applying to Senior Project Associate through the PhD alternative must still consider the published screening framework; the qualifying-degree alternative and the shortlist ranking method are not the same rule.
Application cost is not zero for reserved categories
For General-category applicants the notice specifies an ₹500 application fee. For SC, ST, OBC, EWS and physically challenged applicants, the ₹500 application fee is waived but a ₹100 processing fee remains payable. Therefore, “SC/ST/OBC/EWS apply free” would be wrong. The amount is per application and is non-refundable even if a candidate withdraws, is rejected or is not shortlisted.
A person can apply for at most two positions, but must submit a separate online form and fee/payment proof for each. This matters here because closely related 04(3) and 04(5) posts may appeal to the same professional; a third attempted profile is outside the stated two-position cap. Payment proof and detailed experience certificates showing actual start/end dates are material application requirements. WII research staff and doctoral scholars need a recent NOC as specified; previous WII employees require the notified no-dues documentation.
Application checklist and official route
- Choose by official role code, not merely “Project Assistant” or “Associate”: project, geography, degree and experience rules differ.
- Check eligibility and prepare self-supported evidence: mark sheets, qualifying degree, dated work/research experience letters, category documents where claimed, NET/GATE/UGC/CSIR evidence if applicable, publications, photograph and digital signature.
- Deposit the applicable application/processing fee using WII's officially notified payment instructions. Keep the successful receipt; payment alone does not submit an application.
- Complete the dedicated online form at the official WII Recruitment and Placement Cell portal and upload supporting documents and payment receipt. No hard-copy replacement is accepted.
- If applying to a second eligible role, file a second complete application with its separate fee/receipt. Do not exceed the two-position cap.
- Watch the WII news/recruitment pages for interview shortlists and eventual results. Interview scheduling was not announced in this October advertisement.
Official advertisement: WII October 2026 notice — all 12 PDF pages. Apply: WII Recruitment & Placement Cell portal. Online applications close 1 November 2026; the PDF provides no exact closing hour. The notice was posted on WII's official recruitment page on 16 October.
Decision point: This is a multi-project, multi-landscape research recruitment. First identify a role whose exact academic OR route and post-degree experience rule you meet; then evaluate whether you can carry out the specified fieldwork or safeguards assignment. Passing the degree test, paying a fee or being among 19 advertised seats does not by itself ensure shortlisting or placement.
