Canara Bank Graduate Apprentice 2026 - 3,500 Seats, No Written Exam; State Merit Decides Selection

Canara Bank's FY 2026-27 apprentice intake has 3,500 training seats, but the selection logic is very different from a normal bank recruitment. There is no written examination: State-wise merit is built from Class 12 or Diploma marks, even though Graduation is the mandatory qualifying degree. Only graduates who passed between 1 January 2023 and 1 September 2026 are eligible, and candidates with one year or more of post-qualification job/training experience are excluded. The 12-month apprenticeship pays ₹16,650 per month and does not create a right to regular Canara Bank employment. Online applications remain open through 17 October 2026.

About this Recruitment

Recruitment-specific overview from the published record.

The headline '3,500 bank vacancies' can be misleading unless the engagement is read correctly. These are 12-month Graduate Apprentice training seats under the Apprentices Act, not regular clerical or officer appointments. An apprentice works in selected Canara Bank branches and follows on-the-job training hours broadly aligned with the clerical cadre, but is not treated as a Bank employee. PF, ESI, bonus and normal employee benefits do not attach to this engagement, and Canara Bank expressly does not promise regular employment after the apprenticeship ends.

The selection rule is the most unusual part of this recruitment. Graduation is mandatory, yet the State-wise merit list is not prepared from graduation marks. Canara Bank uses the percentage obtained in Class 12 (HSC/10+2) or Diploma. The notified minimum is 60% for the general merit route and 55% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates, and fractions are not rounded up: 59.99% remains below 60%. If two applicants have the same percentage, the older candidate receives higher merit priority. This means a candidate can satisfy the graduation requirement and still fail the selection eligibility because the relevant 12th/Diploma percentage is below the notified threshold.

The 3,500 seats are spread across 37 States/UTs, but the distribution is far from even. Karnataka alone has 581 seats (about 16.6%), Uttar Pradesh 409 (11.7%) and Tamil Nadu 391 (11.2%). Andhra Pradesh has 247, Kerala 240 and Maharashtra 205; these six geographies together account for 2,073 seats, roughly 59.2% of the entire intake. Jharkhand has 74 seats, around 2.1% of the national total, with Hindi/Santhali listed as the local-language requirement. A candidate may choose only one State. District preferences can be entered within that State, but final district allotment remains need-based and Canara Bank can place the apprentice in any district of the selected State according to administrative requirement.

The age and education rules also contain filters that are easy to miss. Age is 20-28 years as on 1 September 2026, which corresponds to the notified birth-date window of 2 September 1998 through 1 September 2006 for the normal category range. The qualifying Graduation must have been passed no earlier than 1 January 2023 and no later than 1 September 2026. More importantly, candidates who have already undergone apprenticeship training, are currently pursuing apprenticeship training, or have one year or more of training/job experience after completing the qualifying education are not eligible. This makes the programme structurally aimed at relatively recent graduates with limited post-qualification work history rather than experienced job-seekers.

The ₹16,650 monthly amount is a stipend, not salary. Canara Bank contributes ₹10,500 per month and the Government share of ₹6,150 is credited through DBT under the applicable apprenticeship framework. There are no additional employee allowances/benefits. The stipend may also be adjusted for loss of pay. The notification provides one casual leave after completion of each month, up to 12 casual leaves in the year, with no general employee leave package.

Application has two distinct systems and both matter. First, the candidate must register on NATS and complete the apprenticeship profile to 100%, generating an enrolment ID. That enrolment ID is then used in the separate Canara Bank application hosted through the Bank's authorised IBPS registration portal. NATS registration alone is therefore not the Canara Bank application. The Bank portal is open from 1 to 17 October 2026; fee payment also closes on 17 October, while the authorised portal allows application printing until 1 November 2026.

There are several rejection-risk details worth checking before final submission. Only one application should be submitted; if multiple applications are filed, only the latest valid completed application is retained. The handwritten declaration must be in the candidate's own handwriting, in English and not in capital letters. Signature in capital letters is also not accepted. After final submission, candidates should not assume that basic profile changes will be entertained. A system-generated registration acknowledgement by email/SMS is important evidence that the application was successfully registered.

There is no written examination, so no genuine exam-date, written-exam admit-card or answer-key lifecycle exists for this recruitment at present. After State-wise merit shortlisting, candidates move to document verification; the local-language test is taken there only when the candidate cannot prove through Class 10/12 records that the opted State language was studied. Final engagement also depends on medical fitness. As of 3 October 2026, Canara Bank has not published a FY 2026-27 provisional-selection/result list, so no result link is inserted artificially. When the Bank later publishes merit/provisional-selection or wait-list notices, those should be added to this same recruitment as Result/lifecycle updates rather than creating a new job record.

Graduate Apprentice

Qualification: Graduation is the mandatory academic qualification, but it does not generate the merit score. Canara Bank ranks applicants State-wise using Class 12/Diploma percentage, with a minimum of 60% (55% for SC/ST/PwBD). This distinction is critical: a valid graduate can still be outside the selection process if the relevant 12th/Diploma percentage is below the threshold.
Age: 20–28 years
Pay: ₹16,650 – ₹16,650 / month

Post description

The intake is geographically concentrated: Karnataka (581), Uttar Pradesh (409) and Tamil Nadu (391) together hold 1,381 seats, or about 39.5% of all seats. The top six States by seat volume account for about 59.2%. National vertical reservation totals reconcile exactly to 3,500: UR 1,541 (44.0%), OBC 845 (24.1%), SC 553 (15.8%), EWS 335 (9.6%) and ST 226 (6.5%). PwBD reservation is horizontal; the notification lists 125 earmarked PwBD positions across HI/OC/VI/ID categories within the overall State totals.

Duties

Twelve months of on-the-job apprenticeship training at selected Canara Bank branches under the prescribed apprenticeship course/curriculum.

Post-specific instructions
  • Choose only one State; district preferences are secondary and do not guarantee the final district of training.
  • Complete the NATS profile to 100% and obtain the enrolment ID before submitting the Canara Bank application.
  • Graduation must have been passed between 01.01.2023 and 01.09.2026.
  • One year or more of post-qualification job/training experience makes the candidate ineligible under the notified rule.
  • Previous/current apprenticeship training can also make the candidate ineligible.
  • The handwritten declaration must be written by the candidate in English and must not be in capital letters.
  • This is apprenticeship training; it does not carry a right to regular employment in Canara Bank.
Reservation note

National vertical totals: SC-553, ST-226, OBC-845, EWS-335, UR-1541 = 3500. State/UT reservation varies according to applicable State/UT and Government rules. PwBD reservation is horizontal within the State-wise totals.

Selection Process

Selection stages in the order configured for this recruitment.

1

State-wise Merit from Class 12 / Diploma Marks

No written examination is prescribed. Applicants are ranked State-wise in descending order of Class 12/Diploma percentage. Minimum qualifying marks are 60%, or 55% for SC/ST/PwBD; exact fractions are not rounded up. Older age breaks a percentage tie.

2

Document Verification

Canara Bank verifies age, educational qualification, category, identity, application information and other eligibility records. A discrepancy between claimed merit/eligibility and documentary proof can end the candidature.

3

Local Language Test - Only Where Proof is Missing

Optional

Candidates with Class 10/12 proof of studying the opted State's local language are exempt. Other shortlisted candidates must qualify the language test during document verification.

4

Medical Fitness

Final engagement is subject to being declared medically fit under Canara Bank's requirements.

5

Digital Apprenticeship Contract on NATS

Suitable candidates receive a digital apprenticeship contract through NATS. The candidate must accept it within the stipulated timeline and the contract must be approved before engagement starts.
