About this Recruitment

Recruitment-specific overview from the published record.

IISc Bengaluru LIM Project Trainee Recruitment 2026 — In-depth, Original-Notice Guide

Primary evidence: Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Human Resources Section, Advertisement R(HR)Temp-18(LT-JRDTML)/2026, signed 29 October 2026, nine-page notice; recruitment at the J.R.D. Tata Memorial Library (JRDTML), Bengaluru. Seven positions are one post type, not seven separate job categories. Online application deadline: 19 November 2026. This is a two-year temporary contractual traineeship, not a permanent librarian appointment. All eligibility, pay, selection and employment claims below derive from pages 1–3; pages 4–9 provide prescribed reservation certificate formats.

Source distinction: Sections labeled Official reproduce the substance of IISc's notification. Worked library tasks and mock interview practice are independently authored educational examples informed by published metadata standards; IISc did not issue a numerical exam syllabus, test duration, questions, marking scheme, test date, negative-marking rule or interview scoring rubric in this notice. Do not confuse these learning activities with official selection questions.

The seven seats must not be counted twice by treating UR/OBC/SC/EWS as extra posts. IISc has not specified a stipend-linked pay level, pension entitlement, probation-to-regular appointment or guaranteed annual increment.

2. Who is eligible: Bachelor's second class AND MLISc first class

The academic gate contains two simultaneously mandatory levels. The bachelor's degree may be in any discipline but must carry at least second class; additionally the applicant must have an MLISc or equivalent with first class, whose qualifying pass-out year is 2025 or 2026. Passing with only second class at master's level is not made eligible merely because the bachelor's score is excellent. Conversely, a first-class MLISc does not erase the separately stated bachelor's minimum. The source does not provide a universal percentage such as 50% for second class or 60% for first class: universities' officially recorded classifications matter. Applicants should retain semester transcripts, degree certificates or provisional proof, and the university's classification policy if the designation is not printed on the transcript.

The 2025/2026 condition refers to the qualifying MLISc pass-out year, not the earlier bachelor's graduation year. The advertisement does not establish a minimum prior library work experience, a mandatory particular programming language or a postgraduate-diploma substitution. Equivalence of an MLISc alternative is to be determined by IISc, not self-certified based on course title alone. Indian citizenship is explicitly mandatory (PDF p.3).

3. Final-year MLISc applicants: the important result-publication exception

Official PDF p.1: An applicant who has already appeared for the final-year MLISc examination and expects results before the selection's written-test/interview date may apply. This is a narrow exception for applying while results are awaited; the candidate must produce the final marksheet demonstrating first-class completion at the written test/interview stage. Failure to produce this evidence means they will not be shortlisted for the written test. The exact selection date is not specified, so an expected result date cannot be converted into a promised grace period.

Decision example: A 2026 candidate has appeared for the final MLISc exam on 20 October, but result is pending on 19 November. Conditional application is permitted only where they expect results before test/interview and can show first-class final marksheet at that stage. If only a provisional 'appeared' letter exists on selection day, the required first-class proof is missing. Do not mark this candidate unconditionally eligible. Contrast: A 2024 first-class MLISc pass-out is outside the specified 2025/2026 year condition unless IISc itself issues a clarification.

4. Seat-wise Pie Chart: authentic category shares (sum = 7)

The following figures are category vacancy counts from PDF page 1, not applicant counts or predicted selection percentages. Pie is appropriate because the categories partition all seven advertised seats.

📊 View IISc LIM category pie chart

Reservation categoryVacancies
UR3
OBC2
SC1
EWS1

UR 3/7 ≈ 42.86%; OBC 2/7 ≈ 28.57%; SC and EWS each 1/7 ≈ 14.29%. These percentages are mathematical shares of the notified seats, not official examination cutoffs, candidate category eligibility rules or a forecast of the final merit list.

5. Bar Chart: compare actual category-wise vacancy counts

The bar compares counts on the same unit, vacancies, rather than trying to compare ₹25,000 against an invented HRA amount. The adjacent numeric table is intentionally formatted for SarkariSapna's existing bar-chart renderer.

📊 View IISc LIM vacancy comparison bar chart

Reservation categoryVacancies
UR3
OBC2

There is one pay rate for the one advertised post type. No separate salary bar by category should be manufactured. The pie highlights the entire seven-seat composition; this bar makes the category counts easy to compare.

6. Age calculation: 26 years as at 19 November 2026

The document states maximum 26 years as on the last date of receipt, meaning 19 November 2026. Relaxation follows applicable Government of India norms if applicable, but the notice does not tabulate numeric concessions for SC/OBC/EWS or any other group; do not manufacture age extensions in the website's structured fields.

Applicant exampleAge as of 19 Nov 2026Ordinary age check
DOB 19 Nov 200026 completedAt the notified 26-year maximum
DOB 20 Nov 199926 completedHas not reached the 27th birthday
DOB 19 Nov 199927 completedBeyond ordinary maximum; examine only a valid relaxation claim
DOB 30 Jun 200125 completedWithin upper limit, subject to other qualifications

No minimum age is expressly stated in the IISc advertisement. Do not invent a minimum of 18 or derive an absolute universal upper-age DOB date for applicants who possess lawful age relaxations. Any reserved claim needs competent-authority evidence in the required format.

7. The actual work: six days a week, rotating shifts, holidays

The library-based traineeship is not remote, even though interviews may take place by video. Original job description p.1: practical exposure to acquisitions of print and digital material, classification, cataloguing and organization of information resources, circulation and reference services, document delivery, and research support. The library can roster trainees for six days per week on rotational shifts, including public holidays, depending on operational requirements. This is a substantive working-condition fact for applicants planning travel, housing, weekly rest and family commitments. The actual daily shift hours, overtime rate or specific weekly off day are not stated; do not infer them from a generic central-government office schedule.

A trainee is not thereby a permanent academic librarian: the advertisement calls this a temporary two-year contract and expressly excludes pensions, seniority, promotion and similar service benefits. Candidates should ask HR about actual rostering and holiday compensation arrangements before joining rather than taking an unprinted claim from an unofficial summary.

8. ₹25,000 + HRA: what the stipend does and does not mean

IISc specifies ₹25,000 per month plus HRA. It does not publish an HRA percentage, HRA rupee value, guaranteed in-hand credit, tax withholding, travel allowance, rent reimbursement formula or separate grades for UR/OBC/SC/EWS. Structured numeric monthly remuneration should therefore remain minimum_amount=25000; maximum_amount=25000, representing the published base; HRA is disclosed only in text as an additional unspecified component.

Conditional increment nuance: PDF p.2 says an increment up to 10% is admissible in the case of extension, based on performance and the Competent Authority's recommendation. A mathematical upper illustration would be ₹25,000 × 10% = ₹2,500; ₹25,000 + ₹2,500 = ₹27,500 only if a full 10% increment is actually approved, and this ignores unquantified HRA. It is not an official promised second-year rate or a guaranteed raise. A 'maximum ₹27,500 contractual salary' in the structured job field would misleadingly imply approval; keep base numerical salary at ₹25,000.

9. Two-year temporary tenure, prior IISc HR service and exit

Duration is two years purely temporary on contract. For candidates previously appointed by IISc through its HR Department, that previous service is counted in the maximum permissible two-year term. This is narrower than 'any internship anywhere at IISc'; whether a particular earlier appointment falls under the HR-count rule needs documentary confirmation. Either party can terminate by giving one month's notice, and engagement is subject to medical fitness. The advertisement does not offer a pathway to automatic permanent regularisation, pension, seniority or promotion. A candidate's decision should distinguish scientific-library skill development from a long-term government cadre post.

Tenure example: If documented eligible previous HR appointment service is eight months, the remaining portion of the published two-year maximum is mathematically 24 − 8 = 16 months; that is an illustration of the cap, not a promise that the institute will appoint for precisely 16 months. Before accepting an offer, request HR confirmation of reckonable dates. The merit list and waitlist remain valid one year (PDF p.3); this is a list-validity statement, not a guarantee of call-up.

10. Official online application: exact step-by-step workflow

  1. Read the current official PDF including reservation certificate annexures. Verify R(HR)Temp-18(LT-JRDTML)/2026 and 2026, not the distinct 2025 trainee recruitment.
  2. Open the official temporary positions portal: https://recruitment.iisc.ac.in/Temporary_Positions/.
  3. Select the matching Library & Information Management Project Trainee vacancy, not a different IISc librarian role.
  4. Enter name, DOB, contact details and category exactly as supported by certificates. Use a reachable personal email: shortlist, test and interview instructions go only by email.
  5. Enter all bachelor's and MLISc qualifications and mark/pass-out year accurately. If final MLISc result is legitimately pending, present the situation truthfully; never upload a fabricated first-class document.
  6. Attach supporting age, category, qualifications and marks certificates as the online form requests. Check legibility before submission.
  7. Submit on or before 19 November 2026, without guessing a closing hour; do it well ahead of the last day.
  8. Retain a printout of the submitted online application for reference only. Do not send a hardcopy: the original notice explicitly says a hardcopy of the online submission is not accepted.
  9. Check the inbox (including spam folder) for IISc shortlist and instructions; monitor the official careers page for revisions.

No application fee is specified in the nine-page notice; do not invent a payment amount, exemption or private payment link. The college's official application portal remains the final authority for any additional portal-only validation.

11. Selection stages: screening test is NOT the final merit instrument

The selection paragraph on PDF p.2 is precise: a written test may be conducted only to shortlist candidates, depending on how many applications are received. The final selection is based on interview performance. IISc does not specify a minimum written-test score, a 100- or 200-mark paper, negative marking, an interview weight such as 80:20, a fixed test/interview date or a structured syllabus. If no written test is conducted, do not describe it as a mandatory scheduled examination. The shortlist may also be restricted to a reasonable number using qualifications and/or experience; meeting minimum eligibility alone does not guarantee an interview invitation.

The interview can be in person or via Zoom / Microsoft Teams, with the chosen medium communicated in advance. Applicants should be ready to explain cataloguing and library-service work verbally, and to attend via webcam and stable connectivity if asked. The only official shortlist/test/interview communication method printed is email to shortlisted candidates; the test date is not yet announced in this notice. No TA/DA is payable for attendance.

12. Category documentation: no post-application category switching

The seat split is UR 03, OBC 02, SC 01, EWS 01. A candidate who selected Unreserved in the online form may not later demand a switch to reserved status; switching between different reserved categories is also disallowed (PDF pp.2–3). SC/OBC/EWS reservation and applicable age relaxation require certificates from the competent authority in the prescribed format at document verification. The PDF's certificate annexures form part of the conditions, and the applicant must examine them rather than relying on an arbitrary standard certificate.

EWS detail: IISc calls for an Income & Asset Certificate valid for 2026–2027, issued on the basis of income for financial year 2025–2026. A certificate valid for a different year does not automatically meet that stated requirement. OBC documentation follows the prescribed Government of India non-creamy-layer certificate format shown in the annexure; SC certificate follows the government format. The notified table does not allocate a separate ST vacancy; do not convert the seven seats into a generic quota split with an invented ST count.

13. Annexure-by-annexure: what the candidate should check

Pages 4–9 are not irrelevant filler. They provide formal evidence templates. For OBC, the certificate format addresses recognised community status and non-creamy-layer declaration (Annexure-I). The SC/ST certificate example identifies competent issuing authority and the applicant's community basis (Annexure-II); it does not itself create an additional ST vacancy beyond the seven-seat table. The EWS income-and-assets certificate specifies family-income and asset declarations, valid year and signing authority. Read the full form notes, especially residency, legal format and requisite authority, when preparing reservation proof.

Document-file quality procedure: scan each page in full, keep the seal and date legible, make names and category identical to the application, retain originals and reliable digital copies, and check whether the portal accepts the prescribed file size/format. The official PDF does not specify a universal upload size, maximum KB or arbitrary file-extension rule; use the actual portal UI rather than importing made-up limits into SarkariSapna.

14. What is not mentioned: keep the job listing scientifically accurate

Not specified in the PDF: online application opening timestamp; exact last-day cut-off hour; application fee; separate ST advertised seat; number of written-test questions; duration/subject weighting; negative marking; official question bank; detailed marks for interview; date/venue of interview; HRA rate; in-hand pay; fixed shift hours; guaranteed extension-increment date; hostel allocation; permanent absorption. Specified negatives: no hardcopy applications, no TA/DA for test/interview, no campus accommodation, and no pension/seniority/promotion claims. An accurate recruitment page should expose this boundary explicitly instead of pasting a general government job template.

15. Library science topic map — independent learning, NOT IISc official syllabus

The vacancy requires an MLISc and lists acquisitions, classification, cataloguing, circulation/reference, document delivery and research support as work functions. For meaningful preparation, the following conceptual strands are reasonable self-study topics; they are not a board-issued examination syllabus:

Function named by IIScUseful independent study focusEvidence/practice result
Print/digital acquisitionSelection, duplication control, licence rights, invoice matchingChecked acquisition request
ClassificationSubject analysis, notation, shelf sequence, editionsJustified class-number trail
CataloguingIdentifiers, title/author, authority control, MARC21/RDA conceptsConsistent bibliographic record

Public reference materials for independent practice: Library of Congress MARC21 bibliography https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/; OAI-PMH repository interoperability https://openarchives.library.cornell.edu/pmh/. None of these sites claim to prescribe IISc's screening-test questions.

16. Thirty original worked library-service cases — with answer logic

These cases are original practice for the job functions named in the advert, not questions asked or promised by IISc. Figures are hypothetical and are presented to teach method, not to alter the official 7-seat recruitment. Each case has a problem, a reasoned solution and a diagnostic mistake to avoid.

Practice 01 — Collection selection with duplicate holdings

Problem. A faculty asks to buy three copies of a ₹2,400 handbook. Catalogue shows two usable current editions and one damaged copy.

Worked answer. First reconcile the requested edition/ISBN and expected concurrent demand. Do not treat all three current holdings as available. If replacement plus two additional copies is approved, the illustrative gross value is 3×₹2,400=₹7,200, but approval should depend on availability, budgets and licence policy. Create a purchase trail and label replacement distinctly.

Common trap. Mistake: assuming “two catalogue records” means two usable copies without item-condition checks.

Practice 02 — Accession number versus bibliographic record

Problem. Two identical copies of the same textbook arrive under one purchase order.

Worked answer. A single bibliographic description can represent the edition, while individual copies need separate item records/barcodes/accession identifiers so their loan status remains independent. Reconcile the received quantity against the order and invoice and record their shelf locations separately.

Common trap. Mistake: creating a duplicate title record for every copy or assigning both physical copies the same item barcode.

Practice 03 — ISBN mismatch at receipt

Problem. Invoice lists ISBN ending 0189, the book shows another 13-digit identifier for a different edition.

Worked answer. Pause receipt confirmation, compare title, edition, publisher, format and correct ISBN; request supplier clarification or replacement through approved workflow. Record discrepancy and avoid updating stock/expense as accepted until the mismatch is resolved.

Common trap. Mistake: overwriting the bibliographic ISBN field to match an inaccurate invoice.

Practice 04 — Print versus e-book licence

Problem. Five students ask for simultaneous access to a subscribed e-book, but the licence permits two concurrent users.

Worked answer. Explain licence capacity, check the platform terms and authenticated access, assess requests for authorised upgrade or alternative print/reserve access. Do not download and circulate a pirated PDF.

Common trap. Mistake: treating an electronic title as unlimited-use merely because it can be found online.

Practice 05 — Budget commitment calculation

Problem. Acquisition fund is ₹1,20,000; ₹37,500 spent, ₹42,000 committed and a new request costs ₹35,000.

Worked answer. Uncommitted balance = 1,20,000 − 37,500 − 42,000 = ₹40,500. The request fits mathematically with ₹5,500 uncommitted remaining, subject to budget head and approval. Distinguish committed amounts from invoices already paid.

Common trap. Mistake: subtracting only paid invoices and forgetting open purchase-order commitments.

Practice 06 — Supplier discount and taxes

Problem. A hypothetical book list total is ₹18,000, a 12% discount applies; ignore taxes for this exercise.

Worked answer. Discount = ₹18,000×0.12 = ₹2,160; net before taxes = ₹15,840. Whether any tax or shipping applies follows actual procurement terms, not this mock calculation.

Common trap. Mistake: treating discounted price as a final statutory tax-inclusive invoice without examining the bill.

Practice 07 — Title and author access points

Problem. A book is catalogued as Data Visualization Methods by Asha Rao, edited by Vikram Sen.

Worked answer. Treat Asha Rao as creator according to the described resource and provide an appropriate authorised access point; title proper should accurately match the source. Add an editor relationship/access point where applicable. Verify authority name forms to avoid splitting the same author across variants.

Common trap. Mistake: silently entering the editor as author or omitting responsibility statements.

Practice 08 — MARC21 field recognition

Problem. A practice bibliographic record includes 020, 100, 245, 264 and 650 fields.

Worked answer. A basic functional interpretation is ISBN/identifier (020), main personal-name entry (100), title statement (245), production/publication/distribution/manufacture statement (264), and subject added entry/topical term (650). Confirm indicators and subfield codes against Library of Congress documentation; local cataloguing profiles vary.

Common trap. Mistake: treating MARC tag 245 as a subject-heading field.

Practice 09 — Local shelf-call-number conflict

Problem. Two books are assigned the same class number, but one is a different author and edition.

Worked answer. A class number generally groups subject matter; a full call number can incorporate author/item components. Use the locally approved classification and cutter policy to create unambiguous shelf arrangement while retaining correct bibliographic links.

Common trap. Mistake: editing class numbers ad hoc purely to keep the shelf visually tidy.

Practice 10 — Subject analysis versus keyword matching

Problem. A paper titled “Green Cloud” actually studies energy use in data centres, not meteorology.

Worked answer. Read abstract/full context, identify concepts such as energy-efficient computing and data centres, then select authorised terms. Avoid assigning atmospheric-cloud subject headings based only on title wording.

Common trap. Mistake: literal title keyword matching with no intellectual analysis.

Practice 11 — Authority record name variant

Problem. Researcher publications appear under A. Sharma and Ananya Sharma, with matching ORCID and affiliations.

Worked answer. Check independent identity evidence, establish one authorised access form if policies support it, and maintain variant access points/identifiers so users can retrieve both names. Do not merge records solely on common surname.

Common trap. Mistake: merging names without checking disambiguating identifiers.

Practice 12 — Citations and DOI

Problem. A user provides a DOI-looking identifier but its web link resolves to a different paper.

Worked answer. Validate against the publisher/Crossref or appropriate resolver, compare title, journal, authors and year, and correct citation metadata from authoritative source. Do not infer that a syntactically valid DOI proves bibliographic accuracy.

Common trap. Mistake: copying a mismatched citation without resolving the identifier.

Practice 13 — Journal title abbreviation

Problem. One database abbreviates a journal name; another uses its full form and a different ISSN.

Worked answer. Check the journal’s ISSN/eISSN, title history and platform metadata. Establish whether it is a title change, platform issue or erroneous record. Explain the discrepancy in the record or discovery knowledge base.

Common trap. Mistake: treating every abbreviation mismatch as a completely different journal.

Practice 14 — Circulation availability

Problem. Library holds 12 copies; 7 are on loan, 2 under repair, 1 missing.

Worked answer. Nominal count 12; physically available for ordinary loans = 12−7−2−1 = 2. Report the broken/missing items separately; check if any copy is reference-only before quoting actual lendable stock.

Common trap. Mistake: computing 12−7=5 available, ignoring repair and missing statuses.

Practice 15 — Overdue date crossing holidays

Problem. A borrower has a 14-day loan but institution calendar has holidays.

Worked answer. Identify whether the local circulation rule counts calendar days or excludes closed days, and whether recalls/renewals change due date. The vacancy notice contains no circulation fine policy, so do not invent an IISc per-day fine.

Common trap. Mistake: announcing a universal 14-working-day rule from a hypothetical loan duration.

Practice 16 — Hold queue ethics

Problem. Two students reserve the same item; one offers a staff member money to move ahead.

Worked answer. Use authorised timestamp/priority rules and document exceptions transparently. Reject private benefit and report improper requests according to institutional policy; protect patron privacy.

Common trap. Mistake: manually reordering holds without a policy-based reason and audit trail.

Practice 17 — Reference interview

Problem. User asks, “Find everything about sustainable membranes.”

Worked answer. Clarify application/domain, geography, time span, peer-reviewed requirements and preferred access. Build a query with synonyms and controlled terms, choose databases, record inclusion/exclusion choices and present reproducible citations.

Common trap. Mistake: returning the first search engine result without clarifying information need.

Practice 18 — Boolean query design

Problem. Researcher needs papers on lithium-ion battery recycling but wants to exclude lead-acid technology.

Worked answer. Sample query: ("lithium-ion" OR LIB) AND (recycling OR recovery) NOT "lead-acid"; then refine fields, truncation and database-specific syntax. Validate a few known relevant papers and adjust recall/precision.

Common trap. Mistake: using AND between synonyms, accidentally excluding useful documents.

Practice 19 — Search precision and recall

Problem. A search returns 100 items: 35 relevant. The relevant corpus is known to contain 70 papers.

Worked answer. Precision=35/100=35%. Recall=35/70=50%. These are hypothetical pedagogic values; compare them to research need and improve query coverage or filtering.

Common trap. Mistake: saying 35% relevance means 35% recall.

Practice 20 — Citation data deduplication

Problem. A literature review exports 140 records; 35 are duplicate identifiers and 8 more are title variants of already retained items.

Worked answer. If duplicates are disjoint and verified, unique count = 140−35−8 = 97. Use DOI first, then cautious title/author/year checks; preserve a provenance log and avoid deleting legitimately distinct versions.

Common trap. Mistake: removing same-title items without checking author/edition/DOI.

Practice 21 — Interlibrary/document delivery eligibility

Problem. A scholar requests a scanned complete textbook supplied over email.

Worked answer. Check ownership/licence, permitted document-delivery extent, local copyright policy and authorised alternatives. Explain if request exceeds permitted use and offer lawful access paths. Record request outcome without exposing user research interests publicly.

Common trap. Mistake: assuming document-delivery service permits unrestricted redistribution.

Practice 22 — Digital repository metadata: Dublin Core

Problem. An institutional thesis record has title, creator, date, subject and persistent URI but lacks rights information.

Worked answer. Verify descriptive metadata against thesis title page, attach stable identifier and correct date, then obtain/record approved rights/licence/access information. Dublin Core provides a vocabulary framework, but local mandatory elements depend on repository policy.

Common trap. Mistake: exposing a thesis full text before checking embargo and permission.

Practice 23 — OAI-PMH harvesting

Problem. A discovery service harvests metadata from a campus repository and reports stale records.

Worked answer. Check the repository OAI-PMH endpoint and date filters, identifier consistency, resumption tokens, and harvesting schedule; inspect deleted-record handling. OAI-PMH exchanges metadata; it does not automatically grant content-download rights.

Common trap. Mistake: confusing successful metadata harvesting with permission to publish full-text PDFs.

Practice 24 — Electronic resource broken link

Problem. A subscribed journal displays “access denied” despite campus network authentication.

Worked answer. Confirm user authentication and licence entitlement, test resolver/KB link and holdings date range, distinguish platform outage from title-level subscription change, and escalate with screenshot/time/title metadata while avoiding credentials in ticket.

Common trap. Mistake: asking a patron to share their password to troubleshoot.

Practice 25 — Circulation privacy incident

Problem. An unauthorised person asks for a named researcher’s recent borrowing history.

Worked answer. Treat circulation history as confidential. Verify authorised access basis and follow institutional privacy policy; offer general publicly accessible catalogue information without disclosing patron records.

Common trap. Mistake: exposing personal reading history to an unverified requester.

Practice 26 — Reference analytics

Problem. Month 1: 180 resolved tickets out of 200; Month 2: 228 out of 240.

Worked answer. Resolution rates: Month1=180/200=90%; Month2=228/240=95%. Improvement 5 percentage points, not 5% of total cases. Check that service definitions and ticket complexity are comparable.

Common trap. Mistake: reporting a 5% relative increase without specifying percentage points.

Practice 27 — Inventory stocktake exception

Problem. System shows 950 barcoded items; 918 scanned, 11 on loan with proof, 8 in binding and 13 unresolved.

Worked answer. Reconciliation 918+11+8+13=950. Investigate 13 unresolved individually (reshelving, barcode errors, lost) before writing off stock; retain evidence of legitimate circulation and repair.

Common trap. Mistake: treating all unscanned items as immediately missing.

Practice 28 — Shift handover during holidays

Problem. A library runs holiday service; a trainee closes a shift with two unresolved reference requests.

Worked answer. Record ticket number, patron contact consent, present state, actions already attempted, access/safety issues and next owner; transfer via approved queue. The notice permits holiday rotation but does not supply specific shift timings.

Common trap. Mistake: silently allowing unresolved requests to vanish when shift changes.

Practice 29 — Responsible bibliometrics

Problem. A department requests ranking two scholars only by total citations.

Worked answer. Explain field/age/database coverage and self-citation biases; use multiple indicators and contextual peer review, identify database extraction date and avoid one-score personnel decisions. This is an educational research-support scenario, not a prescribed IISc ranking formula.

Common trap. Mistake: equating citation count with research quality without context.

Practice 30 — System outage and manual circulation

Problem. The integrated library system is unavailable and students need essential material.

Worked answer. Follow locally authorised offline-contingency protocol, record identifiers and due/return events securely, minimise personal-data exposure and reconcile transactions after restoration; never invent rights to bypass circulation controls.

Common trap. Mistake: issuing books without any audit trail or using insecure personal spreadsheets.

17. MARC21 mini-record: annotate an original, illustrative title

Fictional training item: Scientific Data Stewardship: A Practical Handbook, authored by Kavya Rao, 2026; no genuine ISBN is implied. The following tag illustration deliberately uses basic field numbers from the Library of Congress MARC21 bibliography, not an actual IISc cataloguing record.

MARC21 fieldDemonstration entryHow to check
100Rao, KavyaConfirm name authority / creator
245Scientific Data Stewardship: A Practical HandbookTitle/subtitle as source shows
264Bengaluru: Example Academic Press, 2026Publisher is fictitious for exercise
300214 pagesPhysical extent; verify actual copy
650Research data managementUse authorised subject form

Reasoning: A user searches a creator, another searches title, and a third uses subject term. Good cataloguing should offer all three retrieval paths. Do not invent ISBNs or add fields just to inflate records; check field indicators, subfield structure and library-specific practice against https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/. This worked example shows concepts, not universal indicator syntax or official IISc cataloguing software.

18. Authority control, RDA and linked-data orientation

Authority control reduces scattering of an author's works across spelling, initials or name changes. When a researcher writes as “K. Rao” on some documents and “Kavya Rao” on others, confirm identifiers, institutional affiliation and publication patterns before merging. RDA is a resource-description framework; MARC21 is a machine-readable bibliographic exchange format: they are not the same thing. BIBFRAME is an emerging linked-data bibliographic framework, and implementing it requires conceptual distinctions among intellectual work, publication instance and local item. These are useful independent learning directions for a technology-conscious academic library, but IISc's vacancy does not require any named framework proficiency. A credible interview answer emphasises data quality and a demonstrable audit trail over unsupported claims of software expertise.

19. Classification, indexing and discovery: worked service decisions

Case: outdated edition. A medical researcher searches for a 2026 revision while a 2019 edition is available at the shelf. The cataloguer should preserve both edition-specific bibliographic records (or holdings structures according to policy), not overwrite older edition metadata and cause citations to point to an incorrect publication. Case: interdisciplinary book. A title about machine learning in biology can be catalogued with subject analysis appropriate to local library classification policies; no automatic classification based solely on first word. Case: missing abstracts. A discovery search may fail even though the book exists. Verify correct title/subject access points, indexing refresh and holdings location; do not simply create a new duplicate record. These cases are practical and not a claim that any named DDC/LCC number is the correct official answer.

20. Digital acquisitions and licence-awareness

Electronic resources introduce simultaneous-user caps, IP/federated authentication, title access windows, perpetual access entitlements, licences and usage analytics. Suppose 12 titles are listed on a publisher's platform, but only 9 fall under a licensed package, 2 are open access and 1 is inaccessible. Do not report all 12 as licensed subscriptions; classify access routes and investigate the one failed link. If an acquisition request concerns a journal article, distinguish bibliographic discoverability (finding its citation) from full-text entitlement (permission to retrieve). Metadata standards and DOI resolution help discovery, but do not supersede licence or copyright obligations. An IISc trainee may assist with digital acquisitions per the ad; specific purchasing authority and platform are not assigned in the notice.

21. Research-support enquiry: full, reproducible example

Question: A scholar wants recent peer-reviewed research on sustainable battery recycling and cannot retrieve full text for several relevant items. Step 1 — reference interview: clarify whether only lithium-ion batteries, a date range, desired materials and acceptable source types. Step 2 — transparent query: structure OR synonyms within concepts, AND across concepts; record database and access date. Step 3 — assess: verify DOI, title/abstract relevance and duplicated records. Step 4 — lawful access: check institutional subscriptions, open-access versions and document-delivery policy rather than sharing unauthorised copies. Step 5 — deliver: export citation metadata, search strategy, date of execution and unresolved full-text exceptions. This service demonstrates research support and document delivery as described by IISc, but there is no published IISc interview question requiring this exact case.

23. Twelve interview questions with answer frameworks

These are original practice prompts based on the advertised work, not official IISc questions.

  1. Why a research library rather than only book lending? Explain that discovery, digital access, scholarly support and metadata enable reliable research, not just circulation.
  2. How would you catalog two copies of one edition? Keep bibliographic identification consistent while allocating distinct item identifiers and circulation states.
  3. How would you help with a rejected e-journal login? Confirm authorisation, licence dates, resolver/entitlement and service desk escalation without requesting passwords.
  4. How do you avoid duplicate acquisition? Search holdings, editions, format and licences before recommending purchase; record decision.
  5. How do you respond to an incorrect record? Preserve evidence, verify authoritative source, correct via controlled workflow and log changes.
  6. What does MARC21 tag 245 represent? The title statement; inspect subfields and indicators against official standard.
  7. When might you use controlled vocabulary? To unite variant words/synonyms under consistent subject access while preserving accurate description.
  8. How do you handle a patron's borrowing data? Apply authorised access and institutional privacy policy; disclose only to verified permitted parties.
  9. What if a document-delivery request breaches licence terms? Explain limits, look for lawful permitted routes and log outcome.
  10. How would you support a multidisciplinary literature search? Clarify need, generate synonyms, search multiple resources and document decisions.
  11. Are you comfortable with rotational six-day shifts including holidays? Respond accurately based on real availability; the notice expressly requires rotation.
  12. What if your MLISc final result is pending? Point to the exact conditional route and explain that first-class final marksheet must be produced at written test/interview stage.

24. Eligibility quiz: 12 correct/incorrect decisions

ScenarioCorrect interpretation
Bachelor second class; MLISc first class 2026Academically meets both announced class/year requirements
Bachelor third class; MLISc first class 2026Does not satisfy bachelor second-class minimum
Bachelor first class; MLISc second class 2026Does not satisfy MLISc first-class minimum
MLISc first class 2024Outside 2025/26 pass-year condition; request only official clarification
MLISc 2026 results pending now, final first class before testConditional application route possible; marksheet required at test/interview
MLISc final result not available at written testOfficial first-class proof missing; not shortlisted for written test
Applicant 26 as of 19 Nov 2026Within ordinary max-age statement
Applicant 27 as of cutoff, no lawful relaxationOutside ordinary upper-age limit
Candidate selected UR, later seeks OBCOfficially not accepted after selection of UR category
EWS certificate valid for older financial year onlyDoes not clearly meet required 2026–27 validity
Candidate assumes written test score directly determines final meritIncorrect; written if held for shortlist, final interview performance
Applicant prints online form and posts itWrong workflow; no hardcopy online application accepted

Remember every candidate must additionally satisfy Indian citizenship, any applicable documentation and formal institute scrutiny. Good library subject knowledge never compensates for invalid qualification documents.

25. Applicant checklist and evidence trail

Before online submit: confirm notification number, name/DOB and registered email; bachelor's degree and documented second-class standing; first-class MLISc 2025/26 or truthful conditional-result status; age on 19 November; reservation category chosen once; OBC/SC/EWS certificate format and relevant EWS assessment year; marksheets and upload legibility; user credentials and official site URL. After submit: preserve transaction confirmation, local PDF/printout and email screenshot if available; do not mail hardcopy. When shortlisted: retain original degree/result proof and accepted category documents, verify email details of written screen (if any), in-person or online interview location/link, and reasonable technological readiness. No private recruiter should demand an unofficial fee or promise selection in return for payment.

26. Full selection and post-selection lifecycle, with no invented calendar

The sequence is: (1) IISc notice 29 Oct 2026; (2) online application up to 19 Nov 2026; (3) application scrutiny and reasonable shortlist; (4) optional written test solely for shortlisting, depending on application count; (5) check first-class MLISc marksheet at written-test/interview stage and other evidence as required; (6) final interview (in person or electronic), dates communicated by email; (7) interview-based selection/merit and waitlist; (8) medical fitness and temporary contract joining; (9) rotational library work; (10) tenure termination or completion within the two-year cap, subject to prior HR-appointee service. Merit/waitlist validity is one year. Dates for steps 3–10 are not announced; do not fabricate results, interviews, hall tickets or answer key links.

28. FAQs: critical applicant questions answered without guesswork

Q. Is this regular government librarian employment? No. It is a two-year temporary contractual project traineeship.

Q. Can an unrelated bachelor's subject qualify? Yes, the bachelor's degree may be in any discipline, but must meet second class and be paired with first-class MLISc/equivalent for 2025/26.

Q. Is a 2026 final-semester student eligible before results? Conditional application is described, with the decisive requirement to show first-class final marksheet at written test/interview stage.

Q. Is there a fixed written test? No. Depending on applications received, a test may be held purely for shortlisting. Interview performance determines final selection.

Q. What is the salary? ₹25,000 monthly plus HRA of unspecified amount. Do not equate base and in-hand.

Q. Is 10% increment automatic in year two? No. The notice connects an up to 10% increment to an extension, performance and approval, without promising a fixed increase.

Q. Does a trainee work only Monday to Friday? No; six-day rotational shifts including holidays are explicitly in the job description.

Q. Does IISc give hostel accommodation? The notice says no accommodation on campus is provided.

Q. Where should the hardcopy be posted? Nowhere. Application is online; mailed hardcopies are not accepted.

Q. When is the interview? Not specified. IISc will email shortlisted candidates.

Q. How long is waitlist valid? One year as printed, without promising selection.

Q. Can an UR applicant switch to OBC/EWS after form submission? The original notification says later category-change requests are not entertained.

Q. How much is the application fee? Not specified in this nine-page notice; do not invent an amount.

Q. Is there negative marking? Not specified; no question-count or marks scheme announced.

Q. Can candidates from any state apply? IISc requires Indian citizenship; appointment is in Bengaluru. Claiming reserved benefits requires appropriate certificate format and norms. No district-local reservation condition is given in this advertisement.

29. Bottom line for an informed applicant

A defensible application follows the primary evidence: 7 seats, UR3/OBC2/SC1/EWS1; second-class bachelor's + first-class MLISc from 2025/26; age 26 on 19 November; ₹25,000+unspecified HRA; temporary two-year ceiling; online-only; interview final. This traineeship can develop genuinely valuable academic library skills in discovery, print/digital acquisition, cataloguing and research support, but it is not a route to assured permanent employment. Prepare by reasoning through real information-service workflows, protect records and patrons, and do not confuse sample skill exercises with a published written-test syllabus. Check the official IISc recruitment portal for any corrigendum or interview announcement under the exact 2026 reference.
