🐾 WII Scientist-C Recruitment 2026: Three Direct-Recruitment Scientific Posts — Eligibility, Research Profiles, Written Test and Postal Application
Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Chandrabani, Dehradun invites eligible Indian citizens to apply for three Scientist-C positions by direct recruitment, under Advertisement No. WII/ADM/2026-27/38/204 dated 2 November 2026. The Institute is an autonomous institution of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. The notification prescribes Pay Matrix Level 11, a two-year probation period, and recruitment through application screening, a subject-specific written examination and an interview including presentation. This is not an online project-assistant application: candidates must use the printed Annexure-3 form and send it by Registered or Speed Post.
📌 Quick eligibility and application decision table
| Candidate question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Total Scientist-C seats? | 3: UR 1, EWS 1 and OBC-NCL 1; the OBC seat is a 2024 backlog vacancy |
| Are there three different specialised Scientist-C posts? | No. One grade is advertised; three scientific fields describe desirable experience, not a post-wise roster |
| Is a doctorate compulsory? | Yes. Ph.D. awarded in Wildlife Sciences; the notice expressly defines Wildlife Sciences to cover disciplines related to wildlife management and conservation |
| Can a Ph.D. from a related discipline be considered? | The actual degree and work must fit that printed definition; the notice does not provide a closed list of eligible degree titles or guarantee acceptance of any particular alternative title |
| Are two peer-reviewed papers mandatory for all applicants? | The notice lists at least two papers within each desirable professional-experience profile, not as a separately stated universal essential degree condition |
| Age at ordinary deadline? | 21–35 years, subject to applicable Government of India relaxation and supporting certificates |
| Basic pay range? | ₹67,700–₹2,08,700, Level 11; these are pay-matrix figures, not an assured salary-in-hand |
| Application fee? | ₹1,000 non-refundable Demand Draft for non-exempt applicants; SC, ST, PwBD and all women are exempt |
| Mode and destination? | Complete signed paper application by Registered/Speed Post to The Registrar, Wildlife Institute of India, Chandrabani, Dehradun – 248001 |
| Ordinary receipt deadline? | 2 December 2026, 5:00 PM; the packet must reach WII, not merely be posted |
| Restricted extended deadline? | 9 December 2026, 5:00 PM, only for expressly listed remote-region residents and Indian citizens residing abroad |
| Written test announced? | Subject-specific MCQs with one-third negative marking; test date, duration, question count and venue not notified |
| Final merit weights? | 70% written examination + 30% personal interview including presentation |
🪑 Vacancy and reservation audit — what the 2024 backlog means
🥧 WII Scientist-C 2026 category-wise seats
| Reservation category | Number of posts |
|---|---|
| Unreserved (UR) | 1 |
| Economically Weaker Section (EWS) | 1 |
| OBC-NCL — carried forward from 2024 recruitment | 1 |
The three entries add up to three, not four. The asterisk on the OBC post in the first-page vacancy table identifies one OBC backlog vacancy from the 2024 recruitment; this does not make the present 2 November 2026 notification a 2024 application cycle. No discipline-wise or research-area-wise allocation of UR/EWS/OBC seats is supplied. The notice also contains no separate SC or ST vertical post in this particular three-post roster. Fee exemption or relaxation mentioned elsewhere in the advertisement must not be mistaken for an additional notified vacancy.
Read both category fields in Annexure-3 carefully. The form asks for (a) the candidate's own category — SC/ST/OBC/UR/EWS — and (b) the category of post applied for — UR, EWS or OBC-NCL. These are separate entries. Someone claiming the OBC backlog seat needs the applicable OBC-NCL evidence; an EWS claim needs a valid EWS certificate in the prescribed format. Being in a category that qualifies for fee exemption is not, by itself, an allotment to a reserved post.
🎓 Essential qualification: the complete definition matters
The first-page table specifies “Ph.D. awarded in Wildlife Sciences” and immediately adds the definition: Wildlife Sciences means all disciplines related to wildlife management and conservation. Both parts of that sentence matter. The Ph.D. must have been awarded; the wider definition means candidates should examine whether their doctorate, research area and supporting records substantively relate to wildlife management/conservation rather than assuming that only a degree literally titled “Wildlife Sciences” can ever qualify. Conversely, a general Ph.D. whose relationship to those fields cannot be established is not automatically eligible. Final assessment of documentary eligibility remains with WII.
| Academic situation | What an applicant should check |
|---|---|
| Awarded Ph.D. with a Wildlife Sciences title | Provide the award certificate, thesis title, university, supervisors and award date |
| Awarded Ph.D. under another discipline title | Explain and document its relationship to wildlife management and conservation, consistent with WII's broad printed definition; do not presume automatic approval |
| Ph.D. thesis submitted, viva pending or degree not yet awarded | The notice requires an awarded Ph.D.; a submission date alone is not proof of award |
| Master's degree and substantial wildlife experience but no awarded doctorate | No Master's-plus-experience substitute is specified |
| Ph.D. and extensive experience in an unrelated area | The relevance of the doctoral discipline and evidence remains material, even if years of employment are substantial |
No universal Master's-degree percentage, fixed number of mandatory prior employment years, separate NET/GATE requirement or veterinary qualification shortcut is published for these posts. Annexure-3 requests the exact date of award of the Ph.D. degree — this is particularly important for the educational criterion and for the calculation of professional experience. The form separately asks for details of Bachelor, Master, higher-secondary and other examinations; those fields do not replace the essential doctoral award.
🔬 Three desirable research profiles: how applicants can match the notice
These fields appear in the Desirable Professional Experience column, not under the separately stated essential Ph.D. qualification. They are three research profiles, not three independently numbered job openings, and applicants are not told to qualify in all three.
Area 1 — Terrestrial/aquatic wildlife habitat assessment with RS and GIS
WII names assessment of wildlife habitats, terrestrial or aquatic, including use of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with at least two publications in peer-reviewed journals. Relevant evidence could be documentation of the applicant's actual habitat-assessment work, its research question, geographic/ecological setting, use of RS/GIS and the first pages of relevant journal articles. The notice does not mandate a particular GIS package, software certificate, number of field surveys or specific journal list.
Area 2 — Ecology and conservation of endangered species
The second profile concerns ecology or conservation of endangered species, again mentioning at least two peer-reviewed journal publications. Applicants can identify in the application which published outputs and documented experience relate to endangered species and what their own role was. There is no official restriction in this notice to any one flagship species or a named habitat.
Area 3 — Humanities, Indian Knowledge Systems and people–protected-area relations
The third profile includes Humanities, Indian Knowledge Systems or biodiversity conservation, with particular reference to human–protected-area interface, implementation of livelihood extension, and at least two peer-reviewed publications. This is not merely a generic awareness or outreach requirement; the PDF specifically connects the desired professional work to communities, protected areas and livelihood-extension implementation. Applicants with social-ecological, community, Indigenous/local knowledge or conservation-livelihood work should use precise, documented examples where genuinely applicable. The advertised essential Ph.D. standard still applies.
How to present publication evidence: Annexure-3 asks for the number and details of papers published, separately the number of books published, and employment/research experience. Page 10 explicitly lists the first page of publications (if any) among supporting enclosures. Use accurate bibliographic details; distinguish peer-reviewed journal articles from reports, proceedings, book chapters and books rather than counting every output as a peer-reviewed article. The notice does not state that publications must all be post-Ph.D., but experience counted as professional experience in the relevant area is governed by the post-qualification rule below.
⏳ Experience counting: a qualification-based cutoff, not a guessed year requirement
WII states on page 2 that professional experience in the requisite discipline/area will be counted only after acquiring the mandatory minimum educational qualification, and must have credible documentary support. Since the essential qualification is an awarded Ph.D., applicants should ensure that any years they claim as qualifying professional experience can be substantiated from the relevant post-qualification period. This is not the same as announcing that the advertisement requires three, five or ten years of service: no such universal minimum in years is printed.
The application proforma asks for total wildlife-research experience in years, months and days, and an employment record in reverse chronological order. For each job it seeks employer and full address, post held and pay scale, employment period (month/year), remuneration and nature of duties. Dates on service certificates should agree with the dates claimed on the form. Earlier research can still be described as background, but an applicant should not silently count pre-qualification service as the post-qualification experience specified by WII.
💼 Actual role, posting, probation and salary
The job involves teaching, training and extensive field research. WII expressly warns of field travel to remote forest interiors, high-altitude areas and islands. The headquarters is WII, Dehradun, but the selected candidate is liable to serve anywhere in India according to functional needs. This is a scientific appointment with field and teaching responsibilities; it should not be interpreted as a permanently desk-based Dehradun post or as a GIS-only assignment.
The official pay is Level-11: ₹67,700–₹2,08,700. The first amount is the lower end and the second is the upper end of the pay matrix, not two alternative guaranteed monthly salaries. The notice does not compute a candidate-specific joining gross pay, house-rent allowance, transport allowance, tax deductions or take-home salary. WII also specifically says persons holding a degree in Veterinary Science are not entitled to Non-Practising Allowance (NPA). That pay-related provision must not be read as an independent veterinary-degree eligibility route for the advertised Scientist-C post. Probation is two years and satisfactory completion is mandatory for confirmation.
🎯 Selection process: understand all four decision points
1. Screening by the Institute
A Screening Committee evaluates the complete application and credentials. Possessing the essential degree does not automatically entitle a candidate to take the examination or receive an interview call. Documentary clarity matters: the degree award, relevance to wildlife management/conservation, research claims and certificates should be demonstrable from the application. WII may reject incomplete applications.
2. Subject-specific MCQ written examination
The written test uses subject-specific multiple-choice questions and imposes one-third negative marking for incorrect answers. Qualifying marks in the written examination are 50% for UR/EWS/OBC and 40% for SC/ST/PwBD, as stated in the notice. These are thresholds for the written examination, not the final weighted-merit formula or a guarantee of appointment. No definitive subject-by-subject syllabus, number of questions, total duration, examination city or date is supplied in the 2 November PDF. Applicants should not rely on a coaching site's guessed exam pattern.
3. Shortlist and interview with presentation
The advertisement describes a 1:5 shortlisting ratio for interviews (five candidates per vacancy), with WII retaining the discretion to increase or reduce that ratio. It is a selection guideline, not an entitlement to an interview. The Institute's Committee for Recruitment & Selection assesses academic record, relevant experience, special achievements/awards, teaching experience, publications, and extension, education or institution-building, along with the interview/presentation. Annexure-3's research outputs, books, activities and references provide the evidence base applicants can prepare; they should be truthful rather than embellished.
4. Final aggregated merit
📊 Written examination and interview weightage
| Selection component | Weightage percentage |
|---|---|
| Written examination | 70 |
| Personal interview including presentation | 30 |
WII will use 70% written-test weightage and 30% interview/presentation weightage to prepare the final merit list. This is not an announcement that the exam has 70 questions or that the interview contains 30 raw marks. The PDF announces no written-examination or interview date. WII will post schedules on its official website and inform shortlisted candidates; checking WII notices is important once the application has been delivered.
🎂 Age, applicable relaxation and certificates
The usual age range is at least 21 and at most 35 years on the last date for receipt of applications. Annexure-3 explicitly asks the applicant to calculate age as on 2 December 2026, confirming the ordinary cutoff date shown on the application. The notice refers to age relaxation for OBC, EWS, SC, ST and PwBD under applicable Government of India/DoPT instructions, but does not provide a numeric category-wise age-relaxation table. Do not substitute age limits copied from an unrelated WII advertisement. Every relaxation or reservation claim must be accompanied by an appropriate valid certificate where required.
Annexure-1: OBC non-creamy-layer certificate
The OBC format (page 4) requires the community recognised under the Government of India list, the candidate's ordinary residence and confirmation that the person is not in the creamy layer. The format asks for the authorised signatory's signature, designation, seal and the relevant government resolution. An ordinary state-category label without an applicable valid OBC-NCL certificate is not itself sufficient proof for the OBC-NCL vacancy. Check the competent-authority and current-format requirements before posting.
Annexure-2: EWS income-and-asset certificate
The attached EWS format (page 5) is an Income & Asset Certificate and requires a competent authority's issue date, validity year, attested photograph, signature and seal. As printed, the form refers to gross annual family income below ₹8 lakh and lists property thresholds including 5 acres of agricultural land, a 1,000 sq. ft. residential flat, a 100 sq. yard residential plot in notified municipalities, or a 200 sq. yard residential plot in other areas. It is a certificate to be issued by an authority, not a self-attestation that WII can replace with a salary slip. Candidates should use the prescribed valid certificate and applicable government rules for their claim.
💳 Fee decision — ₹1,000 Demand Draft, not online payment
| Applicant category | Amount and payment method |
|---|---|
| Male UR, OBC-NCL or EWS applicant, without any other listed exemption | ₹1,000, non-refundable Demand Draft |
| SC or ST applicant | Exempt — ₹0 |
| PwBD applicant | Exempt — ₹0 |
| Female applicant of any category | Exempt — ₹0 |
For someone who must pay, prepare a Demand Draft in favour of “The Director, Wildlife Institute of India”, payable at Dehradun, and include it in the postal packet. Do not transfer money through an unadvertised online application portal. A woman or SC/ST/PwBD applicant should not pay merely because the printed checklist mentions the DD; the fee exemption in section 3 governs. The application form asks for fee details, so make the relevant fee/exemption position clear and accurate.
📝 Annexure-3: every group of application fields applicants should prepare
The printed application is on PDF pages 6–8, followed by the declaration. Preparing these documents in advance prevents omissions in the paper form:
| Application item | Required information shown in Annexure-3 |
|---|---|
| 1–5 | Advertisement number; post applied for; fee details; your category SC/ST/OBC/UR/EWS; applied post category UR/EWS/OBC-NCL |
| 6–9 | Name in block letters (first/middle/last); father's or husband's name; permanent and correspondence address, PIN, telephone, email and mobile |
| 10–13 | Nearest railway station; date of birth and age on 2 December 2026; current post/pay scale/basic pay/total emoluments for employed applicants |
| 14 | Academic record starting with Higher Secondary (10+2): examination, school/university, passing year, subjects, division and marks percentage |
| 15 | Ph.D. thesis title, university, supervisors and actual date of award |
| 16–18 | Other skills; number/details of papers; number of books, if any |
| 19–20 | Total wildlife-research experience in years/months/days; employment from current post backward, organisation/address/post/pay/period/emoluments/duties |
| 21–22 | Three references with designations and contact details; other relevant information |
| Declaration | Truthfulness declaration, signature, place and date |
Photograph requirement: the box on page 6 says to paste the photograph and sign across it. The signature on the final declaration is separate. Do not leave the form unsigned or rely solely on initials elsewhere.
📎 PDF page 10: document checklist — mandatory versus conditional enclosures
The final page requests self-attested supporting documents and a signed checklist. Follow the printed checklist exactly; not every optional category-specific item applies to every candidate.
- Photograph and signatures: photograph pasted and signed across, plus the signed application/declaration and signed checklist.
- Fee: ₹1,000 Demand Draft, only if payable; otherwise the applicable exemption.
- Address proof: Aadhaar card or passport as listed.
- Category certificate: valid SC/ST/OBC/EWS or other applicable category evidence, following the printed certificate formats and rules where needed.
- Date-of-birth evidence: Class X pass certificate, specifically named for proof of age.
- Age-relaxation evidence: supporting certificate, if claiming relaxation.
- Education: self-attested Class X, Class XII, Bachelor's and Master's marksheets/qualification records and Ph.D. award certificate; ensure the doctoral award and discipline can be substantiated.
- Experience: employers' experience certificates supporting professional work actually claimed.
- Research outputs: first pages of publications, if any; list the publication details correctly in the form.
- Other activity evidence: NCC, NSS, sports, nature-club and co-curricular certificates, if any.
- Current/past employment details, when applicable, consistent with the employer record in the form.
- Regular Government in-service applicants: Annexure-4 declaration that the Head of Office/Department has already been informed in writing about this application.
- Other claims: verifiable documentary support for any further claim used in the application.
Important in-service distinction: the printed instruction covers candidates already in regular Government service, permanent or temporary, other than casual/ad hoc/contract service. It requires a declaration of prior written intimation to the Head of Office/Department (Annexure-4). The notice does not state that every private-sector or contract worker must fill Annexure-4; use it when the stated in-service condition applies.

✅ Pre-posting candidate self-check
Before posting, verify these seven points: (1) an awarded relevant Ph.D. with its research connection to wildlife management/conservation; (2) correct candidate and applied-post reservation categories; (3) age and any supporting relaxation certificate; (4) the appropriate DD or express fee exemption; (5) Annexure-3 completed with thesis, experience, papers, books and referees; (6) all applicable self-attested enclosures, a signed photograph and signed declaration/checklist; and (7) the packet is addressed to the Registrar and will arrive within the correct deadline. The notice prohibits canvassing, gives WII the right to reject applications and does not promise a test/interview call merely for satisfying minimum qualifications. An accurate, evidenced application is more useful than a long but unsupported account of experience.

Scientist-C — three regular scientific posts in one selection
Advertised on 2 November 2026: 03 Scientist-C positions at Pay Matrix Level 11 (₹67,700–₹2,08,700) through direct recruitment. UR 1; EWS 1; OBC-NCL 1, with the OBC seat expressly carried forward from the 2024 recruitment. The three desirable research areas below are not three separately allotted vacancies.
The qualification that decides eligibility
WII requires a Ph.D. already awarded in Wildlife Sciences. The exact notice says Wildlife Sciences covers all disciplines related to wildlife management and conservation. The printed definition can accommodate relevant disciplinary backgrounds; applicants should connect their Ph.D. subject, thesis and evidence to wildlife management or conservation, without assuming a different degree title is either automatically disqualified or automatically accepted. A pending doctorate or Master's plus work experience is not given as an alternative. Annexure-3 item 15 requires thesis title, university, Ph.D. supervisor(s) and date of award.
Three desirable research paths — not three mandatory tests
Path 1: terrestrial/aquatic wildlife-habitat assessment, including RS and GIS, backed by at least two peer-reviewed journal papers. Path 2: endangered-species ecology or conservation with at least two peer-reviewed journal papers. Path 3: Humanities, Indian Knowledge Systems or biodiversity conservation, including the human–protected-area interface and livelihood-extension implementation, supported by at least two peer-reviewed journal papers. These profiles are in the desirable column; WII has not published a fixed mandatory number of prior working years. Relevant professional experience is counted only after acquisition of the required qualification and must be supported by credible records.
Work and service conditions
Scientist-C scientists perform teaching, training and extensive field research, with travel potentially required to remote forest interiors, high-altitude regions and islands. Headquarters is WII Dehradun but service/transfer may be anywhere in India. The two-year probation must be satisfactorily completed for confirmation. The quoted pay range is basic pay matrix, not a joining take-home estimate. The notice also excludes NPA for persons holding a veterinary-science degree; it does not thereby waive the advertised Ph.D. requirement.
Selection: how the result is actually reached
WII screens eligible, fully documented applications. A complete essential Ph.D. does not guarantee a call. The written examination is subject-specific MCQ, with one-third negative marking per incorrect response and written qualifying thresholds of 50% UR/EWS/OBC and 40% SC/ST/PwBD. Interview shortlisting uses a normally 1:5 ratio, which the Institute may change. The interview includes a presentation and assesses academic record, relevant experience, achievements/awards, teaching, research publications and extension/education/institution building. Written 70% + Interview 30% determines aggregated merit. No exam/interview date, test duration, question count or specific syllabus has been published in the supplied notice.
Fee, age and the exact application packet
Applicants are normally 21–35 years as on 2 December 2026; eligible reservation/relaxation certificates must conform to current government rules.
