RGCB Technical Recruitment 2026 Three-Tier Selection Examination — TECH/01/2026

RGCB TECH/01/2026 Selection Examination — the three-tier score architecture and post-specific practical playbook

Applies to: Technical Officer (Code 1), Technical Assistant Group II (Code 2), Technical Assistant Group I (Code 3), eight notified vacancies combined. Institution: BRIC–RGCB, Thiruvananthapuram. Source: official RGCB Positions notice dated 28 October 2026. This is an examination guide for this advertisement, not for other RGCB research-project interviews.

🎯 What really determines ranking?

The answer is 200 + 100, conditional on practical clearance. Tier I: 100 MCQs, two marks for a correct answer, 0.50 marks deducted for a wrong answer, 90 minutes. Tier II: ten descriptive prompts of which the candidate answers any five, total 100 marks, 90 minutes. Tier III: a practical skills assessment graded Pass/Fail. Only the first two tiers supply the numerical ranking; practical failure disqualifies the candidate regardless of written performance.

📊 Explore scored stages of the merit total — pie

Scored stageMaximum marks
Tier I objective200
Tier II descriptive100

Score example, not a cutoff: 65 correct, 20 wrong and 15 left blank in Tier I gives (65 × 2) − (20 × 0.5) = 120/200. The penalty is minus half a mark per wrong answer, not minus 25% of the 2-mark question as a separately published percentage (the two are mathematically equivalent here). A blank question carries no penalty stated beyond the scoring rules. RGCB does not announce sectional Tier-I distribution, individual part cutoffs or a fixed Tier-II qualifying percentage. Candidates should avoid importing cutoffs from unrelated recruiting bodies.

🧠 Tier I — four named areas without an invented subject split

The advertised domains are General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language. The notice does not say that each has 25 questions, nor does it publish a chapter-by-chapter official syllabus. A useful non-official study framework is below; students can use it without mistaking it for a notification-issued blueprint.

Official areaReader-useful preparation directionBoundary of certainty
General IntelligenceSequence, inference, analogies, pattern recognition, logical checkingSpecific question counts not published
General AwarenessResearch institutions, national science ecosystem, civic/general updates; practise source verificationNo month-wise current-affairs window specified
Quantitative AptitudePercentage, proportions, calculations with units, graphs, numerical accuracy and time allocationNo official list of formulas or sectional weightage
English LanguageReading for inference, sentence meaning, vocabulary in context, concise comprehensionDifficulty level and passage count not specified

Question triage principle: the two-mark reward and half-mark penalty make avoidable guesswork expensive. Work confidently known questions first, return to partially solved items, and do not turn a preparation rule of thumb into an alleged official qualifying mark. A candidate from a highly technical background can still lose ranking through slow arithmetic or rushed English comprehension because both contribute to the 200-mark Tier I total.

⏱️ Ninety-minute Tier I plan — an editorial drill, not a regulation

One possible personal practice schedule is a first pass for direct responses, a second pass for multi-step questions and a final check for accidental clicks. Adjust time after mock performance. RGCB has not announced a four-section timer, or any official per-domain allocation. Rather than claiming a “safe attempt score,” measure error types: concept gap, reading mistake, time pressure or blind guess.

✍️ Tier II — ten prompts, exactly five answers to be evaluated

Official structure: Descriptive pen-and-paper, 100 marks, 90 minutes. Questions arise from candidates' academic areas and the job description for the position applied. There are ten offered prompts; answer any five. If more than five are attempted, only the first five attempted are valued. The published advertisement does not specify equal 20 marks per question, so that arithmetic should not be represented as an officially fixed per-question distribution.

Code 1 — Technical Officer: engineering analysis and defensible troubleshooting

Prepare to write structured answers describing an instrument's operating principle, a plausible failure sequence, the checks that separate electrical faults from calibration drift, precautions before taking a system out of service, and the evidence needed to release it for safe research use. The advertised role includes embedded/sensor interfaces, prototyping, PCBs, validation, procurement documentation and staff training. Illustrative practice prompt (NOT a previous paper): “A temperature logger reports intermittent outliers after a sensor replacement. Propose an investigation log, isolation tests and criteria for closing the fault.” Answers should define assumptions, method, safety, verification and documentation; avoid promising exact brand-specific questions.

Code 2 — Technical Assistant Group II: repeatability, contamination control and sample traceability

Key published task clusters are reagents and buffers, sample handling, PCR/centrifuge/microscope/spectrophotometer support, logbooks, inventory, safety and biomedical waste. An effective descriptive response explains what was labelled, what was calibrated, how samples were segregated and how deviations were recorded. Illustrative practice prompt: “Design a log-based response to a suspected sample mix-up just before a molecular workflow.” This is a learning exercise, not an employer-issued topic list beyond the job description.

Code 3 — Technical Assistant Group I: laboratory administration with safety awareness

Read the job description's support and clerical/accounting functions seriously. Practice concise answers on recordkeeping, supply requests, simple stock movement, receipt and invoice verification, housekeeping and safe waste/autoclave practices. Illustrative practice prompt: “Explain a traceable materials-indenting process from a laboratory request to receipt and register update.” A good response distinguishes authorisation, receipt quantity, missing documents, escalation and ledger accuracy. The role is not a specialisation in tax accountancy; do not claim professional-accounting certification is required.

Answer writing framework: state the technical objective, list necessary inputs and risks, explain sequential action, define a check/acceptance criterion, then document the outcome. This transfers across the three codes, but examples and depth must reflect their genuinely different qualifications and job duties.

🧪 Tier III — Pass/Fail practical, separate by code

This final test is qualifying, not a mark-gaining interview. Specific hands-on tasks will be based on the relevant role descriptions. There is no officially published itemised practical syllabus, duration, equipment list, numeric passing score or station-wise rubric at this time. Use the task areas for readiness while keeping examples clearly advisory:

PositionPublished role-related skill domainSensible non-official drill
Technical OfficerInstrument installation/calibration, electronic debugging, sensor/system supportWalk through a safe test plan and annotated troubleshooting record
Group IIRoutine laboratory work, reagent/sample handling, instrument logs, waste complianceExplain labelled sample workflow and reagent/instrument record
Group ILaboratory support, logs, inventory/invoice flow, hygiene/autoclave assistanceReconcile a stock sheet and demonstrate safe documentation decisions

Several applications require several practical tests. RGCB says someone shortlisted for Tier III across multiple post codes must sit the corresponding separate practical assessment for each. Clearing one code's practical does not establish another code's practical clearance. If a candidate takes only a strong Tier I seriously and ignores Tier III, the advertised merit process has not been understood.

📋 Tiers, shortlists and what remains undisclosed

Institutional Screening Committee: first checks minimum credentials and documents; there is no guarantee of being invited merely because an online form was submitted. Written shortlist: candidates judged on the combined Tier I and II results, within a shortlist cutoff chosen by the institute, are invited to Tier III. Tier III candidate list: officially uploaded to RGCB website and displayed on the Main Campus notice board. The notice warns no individual email/communication for this shortlist. Final selectees: merit order from written score plus practical Pass, result published online and successful candidates emailed.

🪪 Admit card and exam-centre reality

Centre restriction: Thiruvananthapuram only for Tier I, Tier II and Tier III. Take the RGCB-issued Admit Card plus one approved original photo identification document: Aadhaar, Passport, PAN, Voter ID or Driving Licence. A registration receipt or third-party exam information card is not a substitute for the prescribed admit card. The exact centre address, reporting schedule, hall-ticket publication date and detailed candidate login process have not been announced; watch the official source. No travel reimbursement is promised in this notice.

📄 Answer key and objections — don't manufacture a lifecycle event

The notice announces objective Tier I but does not promise a particular answer-key release date, objection portal, challenge fee or response-sheet download. Treat a later official announcement as a new event if it occurs; leave answer_keys empty now. Likewise, the institute has not fixed a date for descriptive-paper marks, individual scorecards or final merit list. A candidate should track public notices rather than assume automatic SMS alerts.

🧾 Document scrutiny and result readiness

Before the exam, keep clear academic First-Class proof and documented permitted-sector experience ready. For the reserved OBC and EWS vacancies, the respective certificates in prescribed valid form are not optional. Current government/PSU/autonomous employees require proper-channel forwarding or the NOC at selection route described in the ad. The practical shortlist is public; the final result is published on RGCB's site, and successful candidates get an email. The panel is valid for one year after approval, but no particular future appointment volume is guaranteed.

✅ Seven preparation checkpoints

  1. Check that your exact academic stream and first-class credential match your chosen code.
  2. Check documented experience against both minimum years and eligible employer sector.
  3. Practise 100 MCQs under 90 minutes, understanding +2/−0.5.
  4. Rehearse selecting and completing only five descriptive answers inside 90 minutes.
  5. Build code-specific practical evidence; practical is pass/fail yet mandatory.
  6. Arrange travel readiness for the Thiruvananthapuram-only test city and preserve government photo ID.
  7. Follow RGCB official Positions for exam dates, official admit card and shortlist/results; never treat unofficial timetables as confirmations.
