🧫 GSSSB Food Safety Officer 465/2026-27 — 84 Class-3 posts: who can qualify, compete and get appointed
A regulatory enforcement role, not a generic graduate vacancy. The Gujarat Subordinate Service Selection Board (GSSSB) is filling Food Safety Officer (FSO), Class-3 posts for the Commissionerate of Food and Drugs Control Administration, under the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Government of Gujarat. This page analyses Advertisement 465/2026-27, the regular Class-3 direct recruitment. Applications opened 27 October 2026 at 18:00 and close 10 November 2026 at 23:59; online fee payment closes 13 November at 23:59. Submission is via OJAS after OTR. The original government recruitment text and prescribed syllabus, not generic FSSAI posts from other states, are the source for this analysis.
What makes this recruitment distinctive: The first five years carry a fixed ₹40,800 monthly payment; later Level-5 regularisation is conditional. Acceptable degrees include a Chemistry master's or one of several recognized food/health-science degrees, and the recruit must have computer literacy and Gujarati/Hindi proficiency. The merit route is a one-stage 210-mark CBRT/OMR paper, not an interview or shortlisting solely on previous marks.

🍰 How the 84 vacancies are actually reserved
📊 See the complete 84-seat vertical reservation split
| Category / measure | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| Unreserved / General | 40 |
| SEBC | 19 |
| Scheduled Tribe | 10 |
| EWS | 8 |
| Scheduled Caste | 7 |
The maths is decisive: UR 40 + SEBC 19 + ST 10 + EWS 8 + SC 7 = 84, with 40 UR seats representing about 47.6%. The UR line is an open-competition pool under the applicable rules, not a guaranteed male-only/general-caste allocation.
👩 Women earmarks are a subset, not another 26 vacancies
📊 Compare the 26 women earmarks within their vertical groups
| Category / measure | Women-reserved seats |
|---|---|
| UR women | 13 |
| EWS women | 2 |
| SEBC women | 6 |
| SC women | 2 |
| ST women | 3 |
These 26 are already counted within the five category totals. They do not increase 84 to 110. A legally qualified male candidate can still compete for non-women earmarked seats in the relevant categories; absence of eligible women in a women-earmarked slot is governed by the notice's same-category substitution rule. Eight Ex-servicemen reservations are likewise horizontal, already within the 84. The separate PwBD SRD advertisement (466) carries six different vacancies, which must not be imported as a subsection of Advertisement 465.
The vertical pool also has EWS 8 + SEBC 19 + SC 7 + ST 10 = 44 category-reserved seats. This is the other side of the 40 + 44 = 84 total; the division is about the notified vertical roster, not a prediction of examination cutoff. Category and age-concession certificates for restricted reservations are available only under the Gujarat-origin conditions stated in the original notice.
📊 Understanding the open-versus-earmarked distinction
📊 Compare UR with separately reserved categories
| Category / measure | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| Unreserved / UR | 40 |
| Four vertical reserved categories combined | 44 |
🛂 Domicile, certificates and category traps
Gujarat-origin restrictions apply to reserved category benefits (including age concession). The original Gujarati rules distinguish SEBC Non-Creamy Layer certificates in the Gujarat Annexure-4 format (permitted issue window 1 April 2024–10 November 2026) and the Government-of-India Annexure-A format (1 April–10 November 2026). A married SEBC applicant must provide a certificate based on her parents' income, not her husband's income. The notification additionally specifies EWS state-format certificates from 11 November 2023–10 November 2026 or a qualifying Central Income-and-Asset Certificate based on FY 2025–26 issued 1 April–10 November 2026. The exact certificate number/date entered at OJAS must match what is shown at verification.
These details are not administrative trivia: if a reserved applicant does not possess the stipulated valid proof, the resulting change in category or age eligibility can invalidate the candidature. Claiming a category on a provisional certificate without observing the original issue-date and residence conditions is unsafe.
Important edge cases: Widows may qualify for a notified 5% enhancement calculated on marks obtained, subject to proof and conditions; eligible sportspersons have a similarly governed 5% preference for prescribed competitive levels. These are not 5 extra vacancy seats and should not be added as automatic marks for every applicant. The Board's actual merit-calculation methodology and valid certificates control the application.
🎓 Eligibility: why the precise degree title matters
Route 1 — Chemistry postgraduate degree: A recognised Master’s Degree in Chemistry or government-recognised equivalent. An undergraduate chemistry degree on its own does not satisfy this independent route.
Route 2 — specified professional/science degree: A degree in Food Technology, Dairy Technology, Biotechnology, Oil Technology, Agricultural Science, Veterinary Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology or Medicine, or a government-recognised equivalent as prescribed in the recruitment rules. A degree carrying a similar marketing label is not automatically accepted: its recognised subject and award must match the rule.
Route 3 — additional degrees recognised through the 21 September 2023 Union notification: Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate degrees in the specifically listed Food Technology and Agriculture Science groupings are recognised. Food-side groupings include Food Engineering; Food Engineering & Technology; Food Processing & Preservation; Food Processing Technology; Food Technology & Management; Food Biotechnology; Food Plant Operations Management; Food Process Engineering & Management; Food Processing; Food Safety & Quality Management; and Process & Food Engineering. Agriculture-side groupings include Agriculture, Agriculture Engineering, Biotechnology, Dairy Technology, Fisheries, Food Technology, Food Nutrition & Dietetics and Horticulture. The exact official subject title and recognition remain decisive; a doctorate is not universally compulsory.
Two additional requirements apply across the accepted academic routes: prescribed basic computer application knowledge and adequate command of Gujarati or Hindi or both. In the original FSO recruitment rule an applicant with a financial interest in the manufacture, import or sale of any food article cannot be appointed as Food Safety Officer. This conflict-of-interest bar deserves the same attention as the degree requirement.
⚠️ Employment conflict check: An FSO cannot be appointed if the candidate holds a financial interest in manufacturing/import/sale of food products under the original prescribed recruitment rule. An FSSAI coaching certificate alone is not a listed substitute for the essential academic qualification.
💰 Salary timeline and real earnings
📊 Compare fixed first-five-year pay with later Level-5 pay-matrix entry
| Category / measure | Rupees per month |
|---|---|
| Initial fixed monthly payment | 40800 |
| Future Level-5 entry basic, conditional | 29200 |
₹40,800 is fixed pay in the first five years, not the 7th CPC starting basic and not an income certificate of in-hand take-home after deductions. Following five years' satisfactory service, the notice says the employee may become eligible for appointment on Level-5, ₹29,200–₹92,300, under the specified Government Resolutions, and subject to Supreme Court SLP Nos. 14124/2012 and 14125/2012. A future Pay Level 5 top of ₹92,300 is not the initial salary. Benefits and exact net pay depend on admissible rules; in-hand pay is Not specified in this advertisement.
⏱️ Age limits: cut-off 10 November, not publication day
📊 See legally capped upper-age ceilings
| Category / measure | Maximum years |
|---|---|
| General male | 37 |
| General female | 42 |
| Reserved male | 42 |
| Reserved female | 45 |
| Eligible PwBD (subject to rules) | 45 |
The baseline is 18 to 37 on 10 November 2026. Under the original schedule, General women and eligible reserved men may reach 42; eligible reserved women reach 45 because the notice applies an absolute ceiling (rather than a naive 37+10=47). Eligible PwBD concessions also have their own 45-year cap, with disability-specific and category-specific requirements. Ex-servicemen use service-period plus three-year methodology where applicable; the official notice must control the individual calculation.
🧾 Examination fee and refund — don't confuse waiver with reimbursement
General-category fee ₹500; women of all categories, SEBC, SC, ST, EWS, eligible PwBD and Ex-servicemen fee ₹400. Candidates should pay online first by 13 November; those who actually attend the examination can obtain a refund of the prescribed examination fee under the notified process. It is not an upfront no-fee exemption, and transaction charges may still apply. A fee receipt must be generated and saved.
🧾 OJAS application checklist — two deadlines, two different risks
- Complete OJAS One Time Registration (OTR) first. Then use the appropriate GSSSB advertisement number, not the other FSO drive; OTR alone is not the job application.
- Check the name, date of birth, category, qualifications and disability claims against original certificates. Have a current photograph/signature prepared with OJAS's document tool.
- Confirm the online form by 10 November 2026, 23:59 IST and save the confirmation number. The published window opened at 18:00 IST on 27 October 2026.
- Pay the examination fee via OJAS's own online payment section by 13 November 2026, 23:59 IST. Accepted mechanisms include debit card, internet banking, UPI and wallet, with transaction charges as applicable.
- Download and retain both the confirmed application and payment receipt. A form without accepted fee is invalid even if a confirmation number has been generated. Candidates attending the examination may receive the prescribed fee back; non-attendance is not eligible for this refund.
- Revisit the board's official announcements for exam date, call letter, provisional key, objection window, final key, provisional result, certificates verification and selection list. None of those future links should be passed off as already released.
🛡️ Avoid the common filing error: Once an application is confirmed the old details cannot simply be edited. Submitting multiple forms can affect which confirmation/fee is valid. Verify the full application rather than relying on an OTR profile or an unverified third-party apply link.
🧠 Exam blueprint — qualifying two parts separately
📊 See how all 210 marks are divided
| Category / measure | Marks |
|---|---|
| Part A — General / Aptitude | 90 |
| Part B — Technical Food Safety | 120 |
210 MCQs · 180 minutes · −¼ penalty per wrong answer · 40% independently in each part. The official detailed technical-unit syllabus covers Food Law, Basic Food Science, Microbiology, Hygiene, Dairy and Processing. Passing 40% of total combined marks without crossing Part A and Part B independently is insufficient. Full exam analysis, questions/marks and the official ten-unit syllabus are linked in the Exam Page for this same advertisement, not in a generic previous-year FSO page.
🧪 Selection lifecycle and future pages
Stage 1: Confirm OJAS registration, choose the correct notice number, upload certificate-backed facts, and make the prescribed fee payment. Stage 2: Sit the one-stage CBRT/OMR when the Board publishes its schedule. Stage 3: Check the official provisional key, respond only within a formally announced objection window, and review the final key/pro-rata corrections. Stage 4: Check the provisional marks/merit and produce all original documents if shortlisted. Stage 5: Category-wise verification, selection/wait list, and appointment/recruitment training under the appointing office. There is no separately notified interview stage in this vacancy notice.
The official notice does not yet contain an admit-card release date, exam date, official qualifying category cutoffs, answer-key URLs or final result schedule. Future SarkariSapna links must be created only when the same GSSSB advertisement's official records are released—not from another candidate's coaching-site link.
🏛️ Who appoints whom, and what the notice does not promise
The employer is the Commissionerate of Food and Drugs Control Administration, Gujarat, supervised by the state Health and Family Welfare Department; GSSSB is the recruiting board. The advertisement does not give a specific city/district posting, a guaranteed desk, a paid internship, a centrally administered FSSAI contract or a precise take-home figure. Eligibility, location, assignment and actual appointment remain controlled by official service rules and later appointment orders.
❓ Questions that change an applicant's decision
Is this a job in FSSAI? No. The employer/appointing office is Gujarat's Commissionerate of Food and Drugs Control Administration under the Health and Family Welfare Department; GSSSB runs recruitment. FSSAI law is part of the work and syllabus, not the recruiting employer.
Is ₹40,800 the future Level-5 basic? No. It is the first-five-year fixed monthly payment. Subject to satisfactory service and stipulated government/judicial conditions, later regular appointment may use Level-5 ₹29,200–₹92,300, not a promise of a ₹92,300 starting wage. The exact in-hand after deductions is Not specified.
Is Chemistry bachelor's degree enough? Not solely under the Master's Chemistry route. Other specified degree paths must be independently matched to the actual official recruitment rules and the September 2023 recognized list.
Must a candidate pass both Part A and Part B? Yes: at least 36/90 and 48/120; the combined 84/210 minimum cannot substitute for passing each part separately.
Can applicants from another state claim Gujarat reserved seats? The notice restricts Gujarat reservation and its concessions to qualified original Gujarat residents of the relevant category. Nationality alone does not grant category entitlement.
Does paying the fee guarantee a valid application? No; OTR, complete confirmation, correct certificate claims, timely online payment and the separate deadline are all essential. Official update channels: GSSSB Gujarat • Gujarat OJAS. The two notice numbers remain independent despite sharing the Food Safety Officer designation.

🧬 The real Class-3 Food Safety Officer seat under Advertisement 465/2026-27
84 direct recruitment posts are administered by the Gujarat food-and-drug regulatory establishment. The normal notice's vertical roster is UR 40, SEBC 19, ST 10, EWS 8, SC 7. Women-earmarked seats 13, 6, 3, 2, 2 respectively are contained within those 84, not a second list; eight Ex-servicemen places are also horizontal. It is therefore incorrect to publish 84 + 26 + 8 as the vacancy count. The special disability-drive six posts have a separate 466 identifier and cannot be presented as part of this post's 84 slots.
Route 1 — Chemistry postgraduate degree: A recognised Master’s Degree in Chemistry or government-recognised equivalent. An undergraduate chemistry degree on its own does not satisfy this independent route.

💼 Nature of the role and earnings
The recruiting authority is GSSSB, but the appointees serve the Commissionerate of Food and Drugs Control Administration, a Gujarat government food-safety enforcement institution. The notice lists the designation, cadre and recruitment rules; it does not supply a district-by-district posting roster or a binding, itemised daily duty schedule. Work is governed by the appointing agency and food regulatory law. Do not fabricate laboratory shift allowances, inspection quotas, or independent FSSAI employment.
Monthly first-five-year fixed payment ₹40,800. Thereafter Level-5 ₹29,200–₹92,300 may apply if the published conditions and satisfactory service test are satisfied; neither a ₹92,300 starting salary nor a guaranteed annual increment is stated. Actual in-hand is Not specified.
📝 Exam and vetting
The single 210-question/210-mark CBRT/OMR examination uses 90-mark Part A and 120-mark technical Part B, 180 minutes combined, minus one-fourth per wrong answer and an independent 40% qualifying mark in both parts. The Board later processes provisional/final answer keys and proof-checks original education, age, reservations and any relevant disability/medical certificates before final selection. A qualifying score alone is never a guarantee of appointment.
