SBI AI Leadership Hiring 2026: Six Senior Roles, One Application and Evidence-Heavy Interviews

State Bank of India has advertised six senior AI and data positions on three-year contracts, with one vacancy for each role. The recruitment is intended for experienced specialists, not fresh graduates: applicants must satisfy the degree and role-specific experience conditions and can choose only one position. Online applications open on 19 October and close on 9 November 2026. Selection is through shortlisting and interview, with an additional ten-minute presentation for the four leadership positions.

State Bank of India

PsuPublic Sector BankCentralBanking Finance

State Bank of India (SBI) is India's largest public sector bank, headquartered in Mumbai. Established on 1 July 1955, with institutional roots tracing back to the Bank of Calcutta in 1806, SBI occupies a distinctive position in India's financial system by connecting everyday retail banking with agricultural finance, corporate lending, government banking and international financial services.

Beyond its extensive branch network, SBI operates at the intersection of financial inclusion and large-scale banking technology, with digital banking, cybersecurity, risk management and data-driven services forming important parts of its operations. Its recruitment opportunities span clerical and probationary officer positions, specialist technology and finance roles, and senior professional appointments. Employment conditions vary by advertisement, making it essential for applicants to distinguish regular bank careers from contractual specialist engagements.

About this Recruitment

Recruitment-specific overview from the published record.

SBI is recruiting AI leaders—not trainees or general banking officers

For someone who has spent a decade building banking technology, the job title alone is a poor way to judge this opportunity. SBI's Advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/30, dated 17 October 2026, covers six very different responsibilities: leading the bank's AI programme, overseeing risk analytics, designing AI governance, running data and model operations, shaping business-facing AI solutions, and defining enterprise AI architecture.

There is one unreserved (UR) vacancy for each position. The engagement starts as a three-year fixed-term contract; any extension of up to two more years is at SBI's discretion and on mutually agreed terms. It is not a regular Probationary Officer or permanent Specialist Cadre appointment.

The unusual restriction deserves attention before everything else: a candidate may apply for only one of these six posts. The bank's notice also explains how it handles multiple completed applications and forfeited fees. Treat that administrative provision as a warning, not as an invitation to apply to several posts and let SBI choose for you.

All six notified posts are UR; this does not prohibit an eligible SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD applicant from competing under the applicable UR standards. SC, ST and PwBD applicants pay no application fee, even though no separate reserved vacancy appears in this six-seat table. The post count is not six per grade: it is exactly one per named role.

Which academic qualifications actually open the door?

The four GM/DGM positions share a fairly specific qualification list. SBI accepts B.E., B.Tech or M.Tech in the notified computer/electronics/related engineering branches, or the named alternatives M.Sc. in Statistics or Computer Science, M.A. in Statistics, M.Stat. and MCA. Some equivalent engineering disciplines are permitted by the notice, but candidates should not assume every degree labelled 'technology' qualifies. A finance-specialised MBA/PGDM and certain AI/ML/NLP certifications appear among preferred qualifications, not as substitutes for the mandatory degree route.

The AI Solution Architect role takes a different path. Its bachelor's/master's options include Computer Science, IT, Data Science, AI, Business Administration and Management, or a related discipline. A management graduate is therefore not excluded merely for lacking a B.Tech, but must still prove the required specialist solutioning experience.

The Enterprise AI Architect position accepts a bachelor's/master's in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, Data Science, AI or an equivalent discipline. Its emphasis is enterprise or platform architecture; an impressive collection of certifications cannot replace the required practical architecture experience. These distinctions matter especially for candidates who qualify for one architect title but not the other.

SBI tests work experience after the basic qualification and excludes teaching or training experience from the eligibility calculation. The advertised experience should be supported by employer records showing work dates, designation/level, the nature of duties and actual responsibilities. A generic relieving letter that shows only employment dates may not establish a specific senior-leadership or production-architecture requirement.

Why the GM role is different from the three DGMs

The GM & Chief AI Officer is expected to lead a bank-wide AI agenda, not simply oversee one predictive model or data science team. The mandatory profile calls for at least 15 years in Banking/BFSI/IT and three years of genuine senior leadership across AI, analytics, model oversight, governance and transformation. Those leadership years must include engagement with business, operations and technology functions and the management of a substantial team. SBI expressly excludes work done solely as an individual contributor from those three years.

The DGM for Risk and Operational Analytics is closer to a banking decision-control role than a general analytics-management job. Credit underwriting, portfolio early warnings, fraud detection, operational risk and model monitoring are relevant examples. The two senior-leadership years should be supported by projects that affected material banking processes, not only by reports or dashboards prepared for someone else's decisions.

For the DGM in AI Governance and Compliance, the evidence shifts toward responsible AI, model-risk controls, independent validation, privacy, security, regulatory obligations and audit remediation. There is a material inconsistency within the official PDF: the mandatory experience paragraph specifies two-plus years in senior leadership, while a later explanatory bullet refers to three years. Neither wording should be silently discarded. Applicants with only two completed qualifying leadership years should request clarification through SBI's official recruitment query channel before relying on the less restrictive reading.

The DGM for Data Engineering, Model Application Development and AI Ops must be able to explain what happened after an AI application was built. SBI calls for enterprise data pipelines, AI/ML application deployment, integrations, availability, performance, security, incident response and disaster recovery. Someone whose record is entirely experimental model development may struggle to document the required production leadership, even with strong machine-learning credentials.

The two architects solve different problems

An AI Solution Architect helps business teams turn a use case into a feasible, integrated AI product. Translating requirements, weighing design alternatives, establishing a solution blueprint and aligning delivery teams are central. Experience in analytics solutioning, digital transformation or technology consulting can be relevant to the required three specialist years.

An Enterprise AI Architect is responsible for a reusable architecture across the organisation: AI infrastructure, model-serving patterns, secure integrations, GPU platforms, enterprise standards, scalability, resilience and governance. It is the difference between designing a particular AI solution and defining the shared environment in which many such solutions can operate. The bank wants at least three years in enterprise, platform, data or AI architecture within the broader eight years of technology experience.

Neither architect position carries the same stated 10-minute interview-presentation condition as posts 1–4. That difference does not make the architect interview casual; both still face the same 100-mark interview stage.

🎯 How shortlisting and interviews work

There is no written examination or CBT announced in this notice. First, an SBI committee shortlists applicants using criteria it determines. Meeting the published minimum qualification and experience does not guarantee an invitation. Shortlisted applicants attend an interview carrying 100 marks. SBI will decide the minimum qualifying interview marks; a numerical qualifying mark or category cutoff has not been published.

Candidates for serial numbers 1–4—the GM and three DGMs—must give a 10-minute presentation during the interview on relevant work, projects and achievements. The bank has not published a prescribed slide count or topic list. A sensible way to prepare, based on the role profiles, is to present one or two projects with the business problem, your authority, implementation decisions, controls, team responsibility and measurable outcomes. That is practical preparation advice, not an official interview syllabus.

The final merit list is based on the interview score alone. CTC is negotiated individually at the interview or afterwards; it is not a separately scored examination. If candidates have identical marks at the cutoff point, SBI uses age in descending order to determine their relative place on the merit list. Interview date and venue have not been announced in the advertisement.

💰 The advertised ₹90 lakh–₹1.60 crore figures are ceilings

It would be misleading to describe these as six posts paying ₹90 lakh–₹1.60 crore. SBI calls the figures upper ranges of negotiable annual CTC, with the eventual agreement depending on experience, existing earnings and place of posting. At the negotiated CTC level, the stated design comprises 90% fixed and 10% performance-linked variable pay. The variable part is not automatic.

Position groupMaximum advertised CTCFixed component if negotiated at that ceilingVariable component if negotiated at that ceiling
Chief AI Officer₹160 lakh/year₹144 lakh₹16 lakh
Each DGM₹120 lakh/year₹108 lakh₹12 lakh
Each Architect₹90 lakh/year₹81 lakh₹9 lakh

These are arithmetic illustrations at the top of the advertised range. They are neither an offer to every successful candidate nor monthly take-home figures. The PDF provides a performance-linked variable-pay schedule; it also contains differing wording around annual increment limits. Applicants should check the actual negotiated contract rather than assuming either an automatic raise or guaranteed variable pay.

The initial contract is three years, potentially renewable by up to two years at SBI's discretion and mutually agreed terms. The advertisement also provides for termination by either party with three months' notice or compensation in lieu, according to the stated contract conditions. SBI may post a selected candidate in Mumbai or elsewhere in India depending on administrative needs.

💳 Application fee, evidence and common submission mistakes

General, EWS and OBC: ₹750 non-refundable application/intimation charges, plus any applicable gateway transaction charges. SC, ST and PwBD: no application/intimation charge.

Before registration, download SBI's prescribed biodata and CTC-negotiation formats from the advertisement-30 entry on SBI Careers. The application process calls for a photograph and signature, biodata, resume, identity and date-of-birth proof, degree and mark-sheet evidence, relevant experience certificates, applicable reservation/disability documents, proof of salary such as Form 16 or a recent payslip, and the CTC form. SBI's upload instructions generally require A4 PDF documents not exceeding 500 KB each, with separate JPEG size rules for photograph and signature.

There are two practical traps. First, the final, fee-paid submission cannot ordinarily be edited on request afterwards; check the chosen post code, qualifications, experience dates and certificates before payment. Second, the most important information for these senior roles may not appear on a degree certificate at all: it is proof of what you actually led. Candidates already employed in government, a PSU or a nationalised bank should also be ready with the applicable NOC at the interview. Save the completed application and payment receipt and keep the registered email and mobile number active.

🧭 Small details that change the application decision

One-post restriction. A governance expert who also builds AI platforms cannot simply apply to the DGM Governance, DGM AI Ops and Enterprise Architect posts together. Compare the mandatory wording and your documentary evidence first.

Outstation interview travel. SBI provides reimbursement of actual economy-class airfare for eligible shortlisted GM/DGM interviewees. For the two architects, reimbursement is limited to actual economy airfare or ₹15,000 for the round trip, whichever is lower, subject to the notice's conditions.

UR is not a fee category. All seats are advertised as UR, but the fee exemption still applies to SC/ST/PwBD applicants as stated in the notice. Eligibility against UR vacancies is judged under the applicable UR requirements.

Separate SBI recruitment cycles. This specialist AI advertisement should not be confused with other SBI contractual or regular openings. See SBI's other published opportunities on SarkariSapna or browse the wider Banking Finance directory. Each SBI advertisement has its own application, qualifications and closing date.

Original documents and future updates

Use the official detailed advertisement for the precise clauses, the SBI current-openings page for the actual application and downloadable annexures, and the SBI recruitment query page if a material eligibility clause is unclear. SBI says any corrigendum, shortlist, interview advice and selection updates will be published through its official careers channels. The application window closes on 9 November 2026; the interview schedule and result dates remain unannounced.

Chief AI Officer: a leadership record, not a collection of model certificates

This is SBI's most senior opening in the advertisement, with one UR vacancy, a 40–55-year age band and a negotiable annual CTC upper range of ₹160 lakh. The essential experience is at least 15 years in Banking/BFSI/IT, including three years in senior AI/analytics leadership. SBI wants evidence of substantial team leadership, model governance, business transformation and coordination with business, technology and operations. Years spent only as an individual contributor cannot satisfy that specific leadership requirement.

The qualification route includes the notified B.E./B.Tech/M.Tech engineering branches, specified Statistics/Computer Science master's qualifications, M.Stat or MCA. A finance-focused MBA/PGDM or an AI/ML certification may strengthen a profile, but the notice lists these as preferences rather than replacements for the essential degree.

What to prove: organisation-level authority; decisions about AI strategy and model oversight; team and stakeholder responsibilities; and outcomes from programmes you actually led. The experience certificate should make those points clear instead of listing an impressive job title without responsibilities. Training and teaching experience are not counted toward eligibility.

Shortlisted candidates face a 100-mark interview that includes a ten-minute presentation about relevant professional achievements. The engagement begins for three years, not as a permanent bank-cadre appointment. For a qualifying outstation interviewee, the notice permits reimbursement of actual economy airfare subject to its terms. Candidates must choose this post alone, register between 19 October and 9 November 2026, and be eligible as on 30 September 2026.

Duties

Own SBI-wide AI direction, AI investment prioritisation, enterprise model governance, leadership of large AI and analytics teams and the adoption of AI across the Bank’s core business functions.

Responsibilities
  • Lead AI strategy and govern production deployment of machine-learning and generative-AI capabilities.
  • Oversee significant AI/analytics teams and coordinate business, operations, IT and risk stakeholders.
  • Own model-governance, operational oversight and accountable transformation delivery.
  • Guide secure AI platform choices, including data platforms, cloud-native deployment and GPU usage.
Post-specific instructions
  • Read SBI's advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/30 for post serial 1 and confirm the precise essential degree and role-specific experience before selecting it; applications for multiple different roles are not permitted.
  • Use 30 September 2026 as the eligibility reference date; this position has an age range of 40–55 years.
  • Apply only through SBI Careers between 19 October and 9 November 2026. The completed online application requires the prescribed documents and fee payment where applicable; a mailed copy is not required.
  • Prepare post-qualification experience evidence stating nature of work, exact dates and duration, level, position and responsibilities. A government/PSU/nationalised-bank employee should produce the required NOC at interview.
  • The 100-mark interview includes a 10-minute presentation on relevant experience, projects and achievements.
  • Eligible shortlisted outstation interviewees may claim actual economy-class airfare subject to official conditions.

DGM, Risk and Operational Analytics: have your banking use cases ready

The strongest fit is a leader who has owned analytics affecting credit, fraud, early warnings, compliance or operational risk. SBI is not merely seeking somebody who can build dashboards. The mandatory profile specifies 10 years of post-qualification Banking/BFSI/IT experience, including two years in senior leadership of risk/operations analytics, AI/ML oversight, model governance or transformation. The bank explicitly looks for cross-functional work with risk, audit, operations and technology teams and for leadership of a sizeable specialist group.

This single UR vacancy carries a 35–50-year age range and an annual negotiable CTC upper range of ₹120 lakh, rather than a promised ₹1.20-crore salary. Eligible degrees are the same specified engineering/statistics/computing alternatives as the GM's. MBA/PGDM finance and relevant AI/ML certificates are preferred, not mandatory substitutes.

For the application, assemble evidence of how analytics changed decisions in a material banking process: for instance, model monitoring, a fraud-risk intervention or an early-warning system. Explain your actual decisions, the team led, validation controls and operational accountability. A pure independent-contributor record cannot meet the two-year senior-leadership condition.

Selection begins with shortlisting, followed by a 100-mark interview with a ten-minute project presentation for this serial-number-2 post. The bank may post the selected officer anywhere in India. The closing date is 9 November 2026.

Duties

Lead risk and operational analytics for banking processes, including development and oversight of material risk models, their validation, monitoring and related analytical decision support.

Responsibilities
  • Lead multi-stakeholder risk-analytics activities across risk, business, operations and compliance.
  • Supervise predictive and monitoring models for credit, delinquency, fraud and operational losses.
  • Establish model inventory, monitoring, performance thresholds and governance reporting.
  • Own cross-functional delivery and oversight for enterprise-scale risk AI systems.
Post-specific instructions
  • Read SBI's advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/30 for post serial 2 and confirm the precise essential degree and role-specific experience before selecting it; applications for multiple different roles are not permitted.

DGM, AI Governance and Compliance: the leadership-year discrepancy matters

A governance leader's evidence is different from a model developer's. SBI describes enterprise AI policies, responsible-AI safeguards, independent model validation, technology risk, data privacy, regulatory compliance, audit coordination and remediation. Applicants should be able to show how they governed deployment and use of models—including generative or agentic AI—rather than merely listing familiarity with regulation.

Pay and eligibility: one UR position, 35–50 years, at least 10 years of relevant post-basic-qualification experience and a ₹120-lakh upper annual CTC range. The principal mandatory clause requires two years or more in senior leadership. But another paragraph in the same official notice excludes individual-contributor work from the 'required three years' of leadership. Those two statements do not agree. A candidate who has two but not three qualifying leadership years should request an official clarification from SBI rather than assume which clause governs.

The specified technology/engineering/statistics/MCA degree alternatives apply here. Preferred management degrees and certifications do not replace those essential routes. Prepare documentary proof of policies implemented, risk assessments, model validation sign-off, audit findings resolved and teams managed. Generic compliance work unconnected to AI/model controls is not the same as the specialised portfolio described by SBI.

This post is among serials 1–4, so the 100-mark interview includes a ten-minute presentation. SBI has announced no written test. The application window is 19 October to 9 November 2026, with the age and experience cutoff on 30 September.

Duties

Set and oversee the governance, policy, assurance and control framework for AI, ML and generative/agentic AI used in material banking activities.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee responsible-AI principles, independent model validation and control testing.
  • Coordinate regulatory, legal, privacy, information-security and internal-audit stakeholders.
  • Manage model-risk policies, exceptions, assurance issues and remediation.
  • Review third-party and outsourced AI risks across the model lifecycle.
Post-specific instructions
  • Read SBI's advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/30 for post serial 3 and confirm the precise essential degree and role-specific experience before selecting it; applications for multiple different roles are not permitted.
  • Use 30 September 2026 as the eligibility reference date; this position has an age range of 35–50 years.
  • SBI gives both two-year and three-year wording for the specific senior-leadership experience in this role; obtain SBI clarification if eligibility depends on that difference.

Post description

DGM, Data Engineering and AI Ops: production responsibility is the differentiator

Here the relevant achievement is not the model that performed well in a notebook: it is the data or AI service that stayed secure and available after deployment. SBI's job profile covers enterprise pipelines, batch/stream processing, application APIs, model serving, MLOps/LLMOps, production monitoring, incident management, disaster recovery and integration with critical banking systems. A candidate should be ready to name the systems and teams for which they carried delivery and operational responsibility.

Applicants need the notified engineering/statistics/computing qualification route and 10 years of post-basic-qualification Banking/BFSI/IT experience, including at least two years in senior leadership of data engineering, AI/ML application development, enterprise integration or AI operations. Work performed solely as an individual contributor does not satisfy those two leadership years. Teaching or training is not counted toward the eligibility requirement.

The opening is one UR seat, with an age band of 35–50 years and an annual negotiable CTC ceiling of ₹120 lakh. Avoid equating that ceiling with guaranteed salary; the actual package is agreed separately. Candidates may be posted outside Mumbai if the bank requires it.

A shortlisted applicant must give a ten-minute presentation as part of the 100-mark interview. The strongest documentary record would identify the platforms operated, integration scope, reliability/security controls, team leadership and production outcomes—without suggesting that SBI has published a fixed presentation template. Apply by 9 November 2026, choosing this post rather than submitting applications across several AI titles.

Duties

Lead engineering and operations teams that build, deploy and run the Bank’s enterprise data and AI applications, model-serving interfaces and governed production platforms.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver scalable batch/streaming data and AI/ML application pipelines.
  • Oversee production availability, security, capacity, monitoring, incidents and disaster recovery.
  • Lead engineering, model-platform, DevOps/MLOps and application-development teams.
  • Integrate AI applications with core banking and major operational systems.
Post-specific instructions
  • Read SBI's advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/30 for post serial 4 and confirm the precise essential degree and role-specific experience before selecting it; applications for multiple different roles are not permitted.
  • Use 30 September 2026 as the eligibility reference date; this position has an age range of 35–50 years.

AI Solution Architect: the management-degree pathway is genuine, but experience is decisive

Among SBI's six AI openings, this one has a notably wider academic gateway. A recognised bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, IT, Data Science, AI, Business Administration, Management or a related discipline is among the stated essential routes. That makes it relevant to some business-technology professionals who would not satisfy the narrower educational requirements for the four GM/DGM posts. It does not remove the specialist work requirement.

SBI asks for eight years of overall experience, of which at least three years must involve AI/analytics solutioning, digital transformation, technology consulting or solution architecture. The working emphasis is translating business needs into technology choices, designing implementable AI solutions, working with delivery teams and explaining cost, feasibility, value and controls to stakeholders. A product-management title with no such solutioning evidence is not automatically enough.

This is one UR vacancy, for candidates aged 30–45 years on 30 September 2026. The maximum annual negotiable CTC range is ₹90 lakh, not a fixed offer. The post is under a three-year fixed-term arrangement and can involve a posting anywhere in India according to the bank's needs.

Selection is by shortlisting and a 100-mark interview. SBI does not state the special ten-minute presentation requirement for this architect position; it applies to serials 1–4. For eligible outstation interview travel, the reimbursable return airfare is capped at ₹15,000 or the actual economy fare, whichever is lower. Register online by 9 November 2026 and apply for this role alone.

Duties

Translate banking business problems into feasible AI/analytics solutions, assess products and value cases, define solution blueprints and connect delivery teams to stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Elicit business requirements and design appropriate enterprise AI solutions.
  • Evaluate feasibility, architecture, scaling and responsible-AI controls.
  • Coordinate AI product, solution delivery and business stakeholders.
  • Explain technical designs, benefits and constraints to decision-makers.
Post-specific instructions
  • Read SBI's advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/30 for post serial 5 and confirm the precise essential degree and role-specific experience before selecting it; applications for multiple different roles are not permitted.
  • Use 30 September 2026 as the eligibility reference date; this position has an age range of 30–45 years.
  • The selection notice provides for shortlisting and a 100-mark interview; it does not specify the additional 10-minute presentation for this post.
  • For eligible shortlisted outstation interviewees, reimbursement is actual economy-class return fare or ₹15,000 total, whichever is lower, subject to official conditions.
Reservation note

One UR vacancy is notified for this specific position. Eligible reserved-category applicants may compete against UR standards; SC/ST/PwBD fee exemption is separate from the vacancy classification.

Post description

Enterprise AI Architect: build the architecture that many AI products share

SBI's Enterprise AI Architect has a different brief from the Solution Architect. The work is to define the reusable enterprise AI foundation: reference architectures, common AI services, scalable GPU and model-serving infrastructure, secure integrations, architecture standards, resilience, privacy, model governance and the reduction of fragmented tools and platforms. Its focus is enterprise architecture, not only converting one business use case into a solution design.

The bank seeks a bachelor's or master's in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, Data Science, AI or an equivalent discipline. Mandatory experience is eight years in technology overall, including three years in enterprise, platform, data or AI architecture, particularly large-scale AI/ML environments. TOGAF or related architecture credentials may be preferred, but certifications do not replace actual architecture work.

One UR seat is notified. The age range is 30–45 years and the advertised ₹90-lakh annual CTC figure is an upper negotiable range. An architecture portfolio showing multi-team standards, infrastructure sizing, secure model operations and real deployment decisions is more directly relevant than a list of tools alone. SBI may transfer or post the selected professional anywhere in India.

There is shortlisting and a 100-mark interview, without a notified CBT or a serial-1–4 presentation requirement for this post. As with the other architect role, economy-class interview travel reimbursement for eligible outstation candidates is subject to the ₹15,000 round-trip ceiling or actual fare, whichever is lower. Apply by 9 November 2026, after checking that the experience evidence exists as of 30 September 2026.

Duties

Own reference architectures and technical standards for enterprise AI systems, including AI/GPU infrastructure, model-serving, integration, reliability and architectural governance.

Responsibilities
  • Define reusable enterprise AI reference architectures and technology standards.
  • Plan scalable and resilient GPU, LLM, RAG and model-serving infrastructure.
  • Ensure AI architectures address security, privacy and governance.
  • Review architecture exceptions and reduce fragmentation of AI platforms.
Post-specific instructions
  • Read SBI's advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/30 for post serial 6 and confirm the precise essential degree and role-specific experience before selecting it; applications for multiple different roles are not permitted.
  • Use 30 September 2026 as the eligibility reference date; this position has an age range of 30–45 years.
  • Apply only through SBI Careers between 19 October and 9 November 2026. The completed online application requires the prescribed documents and fee payment where applicable; a mailed copy is not required.
