🎓 Seven eligibility distinctions that decide whether the trip is worthwhile
1 — Completed qualifications, not awaited results. Only candidates who have completed the applicable qualification on their specific interview date should attend. A candidate awaiting final qualifying examination results is not eligible even if the final marks are expected soon.
2 — Fitter is 10th AND ITI. The single PA-I seat on 12 November requires SSC/10th plus ITI Fitter. A Diploma or general experience cannot be silently substituted for the stated trade qualification.
3 — The PA-II pathway is B.Sc. OR three-year Engineering/Technology Diploma. There are three instrumentation positions in ECE/CS/IT and one photography/videography position indicated under “Any Stream.” That phrase identifies specialisation flexibility; it should not be read as removing the B.Sc./Diploma educational requirement.
4 — PAT-I is not always subject-identical. Twelve mechanical/aerospace seats and nine electronics/controls seats use Engineering/Technology bachelor’s eligibility, while the November 16 materials-science group also lists relevant Master’s/Integrated Master’s pathways and Engineer/Technology Bachelor’s alternatives. Match the actual specialisation.
5 — PAT-II has a genuine OR rule. The stated general route is Engineering Bachelor’s with two years of R&D OR a completed Master’s/Integrated Master’s in Engineering/Technology. There is no additional mandatory two-year R&D condition attached by the notice to that Master’s route.
6 — Senior PAT requires R&D through either route. Engineering Bachelor’s plus three years’ R&D, OR Engineering/Technology Master’s plus two years’ R&D. Two Senior PAT seats exist in different domains and on different interview dates; the senior grade is not graduate-entry employment.
7 — Equivalence must be proved. Candidates relying on a degree or technical specialisation treated as equivalent by a competent authority must produce the appropriate order/letter, including authority and reference date. This is particularly important where a role’s named work specialisation and the formal Engineering/Technology qualification wording are not identical.
🧮 Age is assessed on the walk-in date, and relaxation needs proof
All positions except the two Senior PAT lines show an ordinary maximum age of 35 years; the two Senior PAT lines have a maximum of 40 years. The original notice says age is assessed on the date of the relevant walk-in interview. Its general conditions allow five years’ relaxation for SC/ST/PwBD/Women and three years for OBC candidates, subject to documentary proof and applicable Government of India instructions. EWS is listed as a certificate category, but the notice does not itself promise a separate EWS upper-age relaxation. The notice does not prescribe a single youngest permitted age for all rows. Do not use an arbitrary year-end cut-off instead of 12, 16 or 23 November.
🗂️ How the walk-in application actually works
The advertisement includes a prescribed paper application form, qualification/experience tables and an NOC format. It is not a call for submitting an online application or posting a paper file to the laboratory. A candidate choosing more than one eligible position must bring a separate completed application for each position.
| Practical check | What the original notice requires |
|---|---|
| Reporting | 9:00–9:30 a.m. on the line-specific 12, 16 or 23 November date |
| Late arrival | Registration is not allowed after 9:45 a.m. |
| Exact venue | RAB Meeting Complex, CSIR-NAL, adjacent to SBI NAL Branch, Kodihalli, Bengaluru 560017 |
| Application | Duly filled prescribed form from the original recruitment notice; separate form per position |
| Identity | Aadhaar or other Government-issued photographic ID |
| Essential documents | Original education certificates, all mark sheets, qualifying experience proof, photo and one photocopy set |
| Reservation/age claim | Applicable category certificate in the required format |
| Existing CSIR-lab staff | Project Leader/HOD NOC at interview; release order before taking up appointment |
| Travel | No TA/DA for attending the walk-in |
| Mail/post submission | Explicitly not accepted |
Application fee: the advertisement does not specify an amount. That is not the same as an officially declared “₹0 application fee.” Candidates should not pay a third-party intermediary for access to the notified walk-in.
🔍 The actual selection method — not an announced CBT
A candidate’s ability to meet the minimum educational line is necessary but does not guarantee an interview or project appointment. The selection committee assesses suitability in interview and may apply other appropriate screening criteria. If turnout is high, it may employ a written screening examination or another shortlisting method, but the notification gives no fixed written-test date, official section-wise syllabus, marks or negative-marking rule. A previous NAL examination scheme must not be treated as this project staff process.
The institution may create a suitable-candidates panel and waiting list valid for up to one year; actual engagement depends on project openings, not merely inclusion in a panel. Qualifying candidates asked to join are expected to coordinate with the Recruitment Section within 15 days using originals. The project ends with its tenure and may be terminated with one month’s notice or one month’s stipend in lieu, under the official conditions.
🛩️ Why the technical streams should be prepared differently
Aircraft mechanical design: hydraulics, 3D CAD, finite-element analysis, heat transfer, aircraft components, wind-tunnel measurements and experimental validation. An applicant with good modelling experience should be able to explain boundary conditions and why a drawing matches a physical assembly.
Metallurgy and materials research: high-temperature alloys, metallographic evidence, metasurface analysis, scanning electron microscopy, TGA, XRD and ceramic-matrix-composite processing. Reading a plotted instrument trace is not the same thing as proving the metallurgical conclusion; describe preparation, reference sample, measurement limit and interpretation.
Controls and electronics: embedded C, microcontrollers, board-level integration, DAQ/LabVIEW, flight-control-law models, RF/radome studies, PX4/ArduPilot and sensor wiring. A convincing account separates a simulated result from a hardware-validated result.
Computer vision and aerial mapping: Python, embedded Linux/NVIDIA/Raspberry processing, gimbal commands, hyperspectral/georeferenced imagery and crop/pest classification. The key contribution is connecting data capture, validation and deployable computation rather than naming AI libraries without evidence.
Media and maintenance support: the Fitter entry concerns autoclave safety/operation, while the media PA-II entry concerns photography/videography with editing. These are distinct hands-on skills; neither should be pushed into a generic software-engineer preparation list.
Questions candidates should resolve before setting out
Is this a regular CSIR post? No. It is temporary project engagement, co-terminus with the relevant project, without a claim to absorption or permanent service.
Can I attend on 16 November for a post dated 23 November? No. The notice prints position-specific dates; there is no universal alternate walk-in day.
Can an Engineering Master’s holder enter PAT-II without two years’ R&D? The published PAT-II education cell contains a completed Engineering/Technology Master’s/Integrated Master’s as an alternative to Bachelor’s plus two years’ R&D. That does not waive the role’s actual specialisation and documentary requirements.
Is there a formal paper syllabus? Not announced. A written screening test may be used only if the committee decides it is needed. The technical topics above are drawn from the published job requirements for practical interview preparation, not presented as an officially issued paper.
Will NAL pay for travel or lodging? No travel/daily allowance is paid. The notice provides no lodging entitlement for attending the walk-in.
What if my application covers two distinct positions? Carry a separately completed prescribed form for each, together with supporting originals/copies, and attend on its own date. Eligibility must independently match each line.
Where will outcomes be announced? CSIR-NAL says selected names will appear on its official website. No selection list has been announced by this new advertisement itself.

The actual qualification gate
A completed Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology in the notified specialisation, or a demonstrably recognised equivalent qualification. The advertisement does not make general prior R&D experience mandatory at this grade. The eligibility date is 12 November 2026, the date of this position’s walk-in; the job notice does not supply a minimum percentage threshold. Final-year candidates whose qualifying result is awaited are not eligible. The notified specialisation is Mechanical, Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering. A claimed equivalent qualification needs an order/letter identifying the competent authority, order number and date. Generic self-description of an unrelated degree is insufficient.
What the laboratory wants this position to do
Hydraulic-system detail design; mechanical CAD and finite-element analysis; aerodynamic and wind-tunnel support; composite-part tooling and manufacture drawings; UAV integration, 6DOF modelling and metrology. This is a description of the notified technical work, not a promise that every selected person will work on every sub-project.
The range of tasks spans aircraft structures, airflow experiments, fluid power and UAV systems. A graduate need not claim proficiency in every named tool: a convincing project explanation should identify the actual problem, chosen model or experiment, test evidence and limits of the result.
Six practical areas that directly follow from the advertisement
| Focus | Published role-linked topic | What to be able to explain |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hydraulic systems and fluid circuits | What the technique measures or proves |
| 2 | CATIA or SolidWorks part modelling, assemblies and drawings | A safe, reproducible explanation and one real project example |
| 3 | FEA assumptions and load paths | How to connect the method to the advertised work |
| 4 | UAV autopilot, ground-control integration and flight-subsystem debugging | What the technique measures or proves |
| 5 | Wind-tunnel instrumentation and measurement uncertainty | A safe, reproducible explanation and one real project example |
| 6 | Composite tool design and GD&T | How to connect the method to the advertised work |
These are preparation areas derived from the work description, not an official written-exam syllabus or official interview question list. If a term is outside your genuine project exposure, explain the principle and be explicit about what you have not done.
A practical evidence-led interview approach
Explain one CAD assembly from requirement to drawing release; identify a load case for FEA; distinguish wind-tunnel measurement from calculated aerodynamic performance; outline how you would verify a UAV sub-system before flight. A credible answer identifies the problem, the applicant’s personal action, the test or calculation that checked it, the limitation discovered and the final record. Avoid claiming software tools, field tests or years of R&D that cannot be supported.
Best supporting records: A brief project list showing personal contribution, dated design or test records, CAD/FEA reports if genuinely created, and details of optional relevant aerospace experience. The stated 1–2 years of aerospace-relevant exposure is desirable rather than a universal mandatory gate. Original documentary proof is more important than an unsupported CV claim; the laboratory may screen applicants using additional suitability criteria.
Registration and contract conditions
Bring the downloaded and fully completed CSIR-NAL form from the official advertisement, an identifiable government photo ID (Aadhaar or another Government-issued photo ID), a recent passport-sized photograph, original qualifications with all mark sheets, evidence of R&D experience where required, certificates for category-based age relief where claimed, and one photocopy set. If working in CSIR-NAL/another CSIR laboratory, carry the Project Leader/HOD No Objection Certificate. Registration is 9:00–9:30 a.m.; no registration after 9:45 a.m. at the RAB Meeting Complex, Kodihalli. Do not mail or email the application; prepare a separate completed application for each position applied for. No travel/daily allowance is paid. If selected, the candidate is expected to coordinate joining with the Recruitment Section within 15 days and present original records; the work ends with the project, and panel listing does not by itself confer a permanent appointment.

The actual qualification gate
Alternative routes: Engineering/Technology Bachelor’s with three years of relevant R&D; OR completed Engineering/Technology Master’s/Integrated Master’s with two years of relevant R&D. No zero-experience Master’s route at Senior PAT level.
What the laboratory wants this position to do
Fixed-wing and multirotor UAV sub-system assembly and integration, autopilot/GCS troubleshooting and UAV system-requirements documentation. This is a description of the notified technical work, not a promise that every selected person will work on every sub-project.
The advanced grade has an alternative experience threshold: Engineering Bachelor’s plus three years’ qualifying R&D, or Engineering/Technology Master’s plus two years. A Master’s degree alone does not meet the stated Senior PAT experience route.

A practical evidence-led interview approach
Sketch how a sensor reading travels through an embedded controller to an actuator command; name the checks that would catch a wiring fault, unit mismatch or unstable control loop. A credible answer identifies the problem, the applicant’s personal action, the test or calculation that checked it, the limitation discovered and the final record. Avoid claiming software tools, field tests or years of R&D that cannot be supported.
Best supporting records: Engineering/Technology Bachelor’s degree in an advertised discipline (or duly recognised equivalent) and a portfolio of real testing, coding, embedded-board or control work.

What the laboratory wants this position to do
Wind-tunnel controls and data acquisition, LabVIEW, software integration, flight-control-law simulation, real-time and non-real-time MATLAB/Simulink models, antenna–radome electromagnetic analysis. The second Senior PAT seat is not the mechanical/UAV systems post of 12 November. This one concerns aerial mapping and onboard computer vision. The same advanced experience thresholds apply, and the documented R&D should connect to the computing and imaging domain.
Six practical areas that directly follow from the advertisement
| Focus | Published role-linked topic | What to be able to explain |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Embedded NVIDIA/Raspberry device deployment | What the technique measures or proves |
| 2 | Georeferencing and mosaicking aerial imagery | A safe, reproducible explanation and one real project example |
| 3 | Hyperspectral versus ordinary RGB data | How to connect the method to the advertised work |
| 4 | Deep-learning crop/pest classification validation | What the technique measures or proves |
| 5 | False positives and class imbalance | A safe, reproducible explanation and one real project example |
| 6 | End-to-end PX4/flight-data integration | How to connect the method to the advertised work |
These are preparation areas derived from the work description, not an official written-exam syllabus or official interview question list. If a term is outside your genuine project exposure, explain the principle and be explicit about what you have not done.
A practical evidence-led interview approach
Describe an end-to-end aerial imagery experiment: image capture, metadata, map alignment, labelled training and genuinely held-out test data, model deployment and monitoring of classification errors. A credible answer identifies the problem, the applicant’s personal action, the test or calculation that checked it, the limitation discovered and the final record. Avoid claiming software tools, field tests or years of R&D that cannot be supported.
Best supporting records: Three years R&D after Engineering Bachelor’s OR Engineering/Technology Master’s plus two years; substantive evidence of embedded or computer-vision R&D, with valid experience certificates.
