VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital Senior Resident 2026 — Written Screening and Department Assessment
Recruitment reference ACDM-13015/1/2026-ACAD-VMMC | 470 posts, 42 specialties | Screening 60 marks + assessment 40 marks
VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital has notified an MCQ screening examination followed by a departmental assessment/interview for its November 2026 regular Senior Resident recruitment. The test date, exam centre, shift, detailed official syllabus and specialty-wise question allocation are not yet provided in this notice. Preparation advice below is explicitly advice rather than an announced official syllabus.
1. Official assessment framework
🥧 Two official score components of the 100-mark process
No minimum qualifying percentage, per-specialty question allocation, official subject list or separate interview timetable is printed. Do not treat the phrase 'one-hour 60-mark MCQ screen' as a published chapter blueprint; the number of questions is not independently tabulated in the issued notice.
2. The first decision: which medical PG qualification qualifies for which specialty?
Some specialties are not restricted to a PG degree bearing the same title as the department. These are the most consequential published exceptions:
An applicant may be qualified for more than one department but is permitted to apply for only one. In particular, an MD Medicine holder must still choose among the eligible departments and cannot submit parallel applications for Medicine, Neurology and Cardiology.
3. Written examination preparation — distinct from an official syllabus
The notification does not provide chapter-wise subject headings. It is sensible for a postgraduate doctor to revise professional core concepts relevant to the actual degree held and the selected department, but this is a candidate preparation plan, not a claim about the topics that will appear. For example, Medicine entrants choosing Cardiology/Neurology/Nephrology may revise clinical reasoning within those specialties; Surgery entrants selecting CTVS/Neuro Surgery/Urology may organise relevant surgical principles and case-management fundamentals; dental MDS applicants should use their respective specialist study materials. Do not infer a fixed proportion of questions on medicine, surgery, current affairs, research methodology or English from this notice.
The negative-marking rule makes accuracy important. For illustration, 30 correct answers and 6 wrong answers would contribute 30 − (6 × 0.25) = 28.5 marks from those answered questions. This is arithmetic only, not an official sample paper, question distribution or recommended attempt strategy.
4. Department assessment: evidence the hospital specifically values
The 40-mark assessment is distinct from the screening paper. The issued notice says candidates should bring documentary proof of publications, conference/CME paper presentations and academic distinctions, awards or medals earned during MBBS/PG. The selection board considers these when awarding assessment marks; the advertisement does not specify exactly how many marks each article or certificate is worth. Bring originals for core degrees, marksheets, age proof, registration, category status and experience where claimed. NOC is required at interview if a shortlisted applicant is employed in Government, PSU or an autonomous institution.
A useful self-preparation exercise is to prepare concise, evidence-based accounts of one’s clinical or academic cases and to distinguish personal contributions from team work. For lab/preclinical specialties, use authentic research or teaching examples rather than claiming experience not undertaken. For emergency, anaesthesia, imaging and surgical departments, clinical decisions within the applicant’s actual PG training are more defensible than extrapolating to unheld super-specialty qualifications. These are practical suggestions and have not been notified as assessment questions.
5. Category, shortlisting and roster arithmetic
The combined 470-position roster is UR 162, EWS 75, SC 68, ST 35, OBC 130. The hospital says the department assessment will be offered to candidates up to three times vacancy strength (or fewer if eligible candidates are not available), and final offers are issued within each advertised category. The 29 PwBD horizontal seats are already within the overall 470 and 86 backlog vacancies are included in the advertised roster. No unsupported universal qualifying mark or predicted cutoff can be deduced from these counts.
6. Practical exam-day preparation and later results
The actual exam date, venue and centre instructions will be placed on the hospital's official website. Download the examination admit card when posted (different from the candidate-filled Annexure-II proforma that must be enclosed with the paper application now). Bring the printed exam card and an original Government photo ID: Aadhaar, PAN, voter card, driving licence or passport as the notice lists. No separate call letter for the written examination/interview is promised.
After the written screen, monitor the hospital’s announced shortlist for the departmental assessment. Publication of a shortlist is not a final result. Final merit combines both scoring stages, and the hospital may publish a waiting list where enough qualified candidates exist. The notice's tentative 10-day joining expectation starts from an eventual final-result publication, not a date already specified.
7. Document checks that can invalidate an otherwise good result
For MD/MS/DNB/Diploma applicants, ensure the correct recognised PG credential and relevant Delhi Medical Council registration for MBBS and PG. For dental applicants, follow MDS and Delhi Dental Council / permitted dental State Council proof as specified. A PG qualifying result must exist by 25 November 2026 (both DNB theory and practical), even where PG training itself runs until 31 December 2026. The application must select one specialty only; the filled Annexure-II proforma must be enclosed with the hardcopy. OBC/EWS certificates must meet the 1 April 2026 cut-off for their issue dates, where applicable.
