CSL CKSRU Assistant Engineer test: technical marks matter, but the selection does not end at the written papers
The selection carries 100 marks: the objective offline test is worth 40, the descriptive offline test 40, and the work-experience presentation 20. The tests are followed by certificate verification before candidates move to the presentation. A qualifying mark is only a threshold; final rank depends on the marks earned across the notified phases and the eligibility documents being accepted.
📝 Objective paper: 40 questions, 45 minutes
Each question is worth one mark. The advertisement explicitly says there is no negative marking. Four general sections together carry 20 marks; the discipline section carries the other 20.
📊 Objective-test marks by section
🥧 Share of objective-test marks
The discipline section supplies half of the objective marks. That makes the correct branch syllabus important: Civil applicants should prepare the Civil list below; Mechanical applicants should follow the separately notified Mechanical topics. The four general sections are equal in marks, but each has only five objective questions.
✍️ Descriptive paper: 40 marks, 90 minutes
The descriptive paper contains discipline-related questions. The notice gives 90 minutes and 40 marks but does not publish a question count, a topic-wise mark split or a fixed essay/problem format. Do not assume a question distribution from another CSL recruitment.
The descriptive answers are evaluated only after the candidate clears the objective test's minimum and meets the eligibility conditions. The minimum pass standard is 50% of each test under the notification. Prepare to explain a method, calculation, drawing or work decision in clear steps rather than relying only on short objective answers.
📈 How the full 100 marks are allocated
📊 Marks across the selection stages
🥧 Share of final selection marks
The presentation is not a generic interview on motivation: it is a maximum ten-minute presentation highlighting the candidate's work experience. The advertised selection note says final rank uses Phase I and Phase II marks. If aggregate marks tie, discipline-related objective marks are considered first; if still tied, the older candidate ranks ahead.
📚 Official syllabus: common supervisor topics plus branch-specific study

Assistant Engineer (Civil): discipline syllabus
Assistant Engineer (Mechanical): discipline syllabus
The official Annexure-I lists: thermodynamics and energy cycles; IC engines, including four-stroke and two-stroke; refrigeration, air-conditioning and psychrometrics; welding types and defects, gas flames, soldering and brazing; manufacturing processes and machine tools; corrosion and prevention; renewable and non-renewable energy sources; and pumps and their types. The annexure also applies the shared supervisory, computer and workplace-safety topics stated above.
📅 What is known about the test date
The advertisement does not announce an examination date, admit-card date, centre allocation or reporting time. It says the tests are to be held in West Bengal as decided by CKSRU; the centre allocation remains CSL's decision. The selection may also be conducted through electronic media as stated in the notice. Candidates should monitor the CKSRU Kolkata career listing and the email used in the application.
Practical preparation: start with the notified discipline topics and shared supervisory subjects, then practise the 45-minute objective and 90-minute descriptive papers separately. The time limits are official; any mock-test routine or expected cut-off would be a preparation choice, not a CSL-published rule.
