Group-A and Group-B applicants share this first-stage MCQ preliminary examination. Its outcome decides eligibility for the respective group’s main examination; it is not added to the final selection merit. The notification gives a two-hour (120-minute) limit for 150 questions of one mark each, with a penalty of 0.25 mark for each incorrect answer. It provides an extra 20 minutes per hour for eligible candidates with disabilities, subject to the applicable rules.

📊 Preliminary examination section weight
| Section | Marks |
|---|---|
| English | 15 |
| Gujarati | 15 |
| General Awareness and Current Affairs | 30 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 30 |
| Reasoning | 60 |
Reasoning is 60 marks (40%), more than any other single preliminary section. English and Gujarati are separate 15-mark subjects; these are not replaced by the Group-A Gujarati and English main papers. Quantitative Aptitude and current-affairs/general-awareness sections are 30 marks each. The four non-reasoning sections together account for 90 marks.
The published formula for this paper, before any special treatment, is marks = correct answers − 0.25 × wrong answers; an unattempted question is not listed as attracting a wrong-answer penalty. These are explanatory arithmetic examples, not predicted selection marks:
| Illustrative attempts | Correct | Wrong | Unattempted | Score / 150 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Controlled attempts | 90 | 20 | 40 | 85 |
| More aggressive attempts | 100 | 40 | 10 | 90 |
| All 150 answered | 110 | 40 | 0 | 100 |
The second case scores higher than the first despite 20 extra errors because it supplies 10 more correct answers; that does not imply guessing is always advantageous. A careful candidate should compare attainable accuracy under time pressure, rather than using a blanket rule about attempting all 150.
The notice prescribes at least 40% in the preliminary stage for all categories: 60 of 150 as a basic minimum. That number alone cannot secure main-exam entry. After applying the notified standards, the Board draws separate Group-A and Group-B lists for mains, based on category-wise vacancies at roughly seven times the number of places. Those shortlisted are conditionally admitted; their underlying degree, age and documentary eligibility still need verification.
English (15): the published heading is English; no chapter-by-chapter preliminary list is attached. Grammar, comprehension and vocabulary drills may be useful as practice methods but are not additional subjects officially notified in this advertisement.
Gujarati (15): prepare reading accuracy and comprehension of Gujarati language within the official heading. The main Group-A Gujarati descriptive syllabus is separately specified; do not conflate it with the preliminary 15-mark section.
General Awareness and Current Affairs (30): revise verified regional, national and international developments in chronological context, and connect static institutions to recent developments. No prescribed number of current-affairs months is published.
Quantitative Aptitude (30): time-limited numeric interpretation and sound arithmetic method are suitable study skills, but the notice does not provide an item-by-item preliminary chapter weightage.
Reasoning (60): practise identifying conditions and drawing valid conclusions without losing time on speculative paths. There is no published internal split between verbal and nonverbal reasoning in this particular paper.
120 minutes divided by 150 questions gives an overall 48 seconds per question. This is merely an arithmetic benchmark, not an official clock allotted to each section. For example, a candidate may do shorter language or awareness questions quickly and reserve more time for multi-step reasoning, then return to doubtful items. Final attempt choices should comply with instructions on the admit card and test interface when released.
No test date, venue, call-letter release or score cut-off has been announced in this advertisement. Check the GSSSB official website and OJAS for later schedules. The decisive next step differs by target cadre: Group A follows a 350-mark descriptive main; Group B follows a 200-mark objective main.
Only the 994 Junior Clerk places form Group B under Advertisement 468/202627. After the common 150-mark screening prelim, Group-B candidates sit the 200-mark objective (MCQ) main examination lasting 120 minutes. Do not use the Group-A three-paper descriptive syllabus or its nine hours of main-paper time for Junior Clerk.

The published highest-weight blocks are government schemes (30) and regional, national and international events/current affairs (30). Together they make 60 of 200 marks. The blocks on Constitution, Economy, Governance, Gujarat history/geography, Gujarati-English and Science/Environment/IT carry 20 each. Public-service ethics and Gujarat culture each carry 10. This split is an official scheme, not a model of likely question numbers within subtopics.
Indian State System and Constitution (20): identify constitutional bodies, central and state institutions, legislative and administrative responsibilities. Read facts in context: a name without its authority and purpose is rarely useful for understanding governance.
Indian Economy, State Economy and NITI Aayog (20): connect national and Gujarat economic policy, planning institutions, public finance and economic developments. The question headings do not publish a current-affairs cutoff month.
Public Administration and Governance (20): concentrate on the functioning of government bodies, service delivery, oversight and accountability rather than assuming this is a law-graduate subject paper.
Ethics in Public Service (10): distinguish integrity, conflict of interest, impartiality and conduct in administration. The 10-mark value is fixed; the advertisement does not announce an interview on ethics.
Government Schemes (30): assess the implementing government body, intended beneficiaries, eligibility, nature of the benefit and actual implementation or revision date. Do not confuse similarly named central and Gujarat schemes.
Current events (30): regional, Indian and international developments. Prioritise primary government releases for changing values and dates; no exact monthly coverage window is prescribed.
Gujarat history/geography (20) and cultural heritage (10): keep a Gujarat-centred geographic and cultural reference framework separate from national historical topics.
Gujarati and English (20): both languages are stated together within this block. The notice does not specify a separate 20 marks for each; together the block is worth 20.
Science, Environment and Information Technology (20): read basic concepts, environmental issues and information-technology applications with reference to contemporary administration. The notification gives a subject block, not a list of guaranteed chapters.
The stated minimum is 40% for this main examination, equivalent to 80 of 200 on the announced scheme. That is a minimum threshold, not a predicted or published selection cutoff. Selection also depends on relative marks, relevant reservations and eligibility verification. Preliminary marks do not become part of the final selection result. The advertisement expressly provides no waiting list for the multi-cadre recruitment.
(1) There are 994 Junior Clerk seats, not 1,237; the remaining 243 belong to Group A. (2) A 150-mark common prelim is not a second 150-mark component of final Group-B merit. (3) A government-schemes/current-events combination of 60 marks is not the full General Awareness syllabus of the preliminary paper; they are different stages.
Exam dates, hall tickets and results are not yet announced. Use the official GSSSB website for later dates and the original notification for the precise published blocks.
