GSSSB Group-A Main Examination 2026–27: three descriptive papers, 350 marks

All eight Group-A cadres under Advertisement 468/202627 use the Group-A main scheme of Appendix G. It comprises Gujarati Language Skill, English Language Skill and General Studies, each lasting three hours. This is not the 200-mark Group-B Junior Clerk paper. Candidates must satisfy the notice’s 40% minimum in each main paper; an aggregate at or above 40% does not excuse a paper below its own standard. Preliminary marks are excluded from final selection merit.

TOTAL100

This paper explicitly assesses composition in different formal genres. A 150-word report is not the same as a persuasive opinion piece, and the 10-sentence translation is marked separately. Candidates should recognise the task before writing: format and register matter alongside content. The Gujarati grammar section includes stated categories such as idioms, proverbs, compound analysis, poetry metre, figures of speech, spelling and sentence formation, rather than a vague instruction to study the language.

Paper II: English language (100 marks) — published tasks

TaskMarks
Essay: about 250 words15
Letter writing10
Report writing10
Visual information / chart interpretation10
Formal speech: about 100 words5
Precis of a 150-word passage in about 50 words5

TOTAL100

The official English grammar list includes tenses, voice, direct/indirect speech, sentence transformation, articles/determiners, prepositions, phrasal verbs, idioms, administrative terminology, synonyms and antonyms, one-word substitution, cohesive expressions, affixes and confusing words such as homonyms. As those areas have 20 marks, they warrant systematic accuracy checks, while comprehension itself contributes another 20 marks. Report and chart-interpretation writing demands clear comparisons, not fabricated numerical claims.

Paper III question format — why answer length matters

Marks per questionApproximate wordsQuestionsTotal marks
110–201010
220–301020
330–503090
5About 100630
TOTAL—56150

Most questions are in the three-mark band: 30 questions × 3 marks = 90 of 150 marks. An answer of 200 words to a three-mark question consumes room and time better reserved for the next question. The word lengths here are from the official appendix, not an arbitrary coaching benchmark. An economical answer must still address the question directly, with a fact or reason supporting the conclusion. The full three-paper schedule is 3 hours per paper; the test dates have not been announced.

Comparing two candidate journeys

A Social Welfare Inspector aspirant and a Senior Clerk aspirant both take these Group-A papers, even though the fixed-pay and category rosters differ. Both must achieve the qualifying minimum in Gujarati, English and General Studies separately, and the ultimate merit is tied to the mains and applicable notified considerations. Group-B’s standalone MCQ paper is not an alternative to this assessment. Review the official 38-page notice, especially Appendices G and H, for the full original-language task descriptions.
