Northern Railway Act Apprentice Recruitment 2026–27: 4,651 Training Slots
Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC), Northern Railway · Notification RRC/NR/03/2026/Act Apprentice · 6 November 2026
This is apprenticeship training under the Apprentices Act, 1961—not recruitment to a permanent railway post. Successful completion of the course does not create a right to automatic railway employment. The railway has not promised absorption or a future regular appointment.
Northern Railway has notified 4,651 provisional training slots at its divisions, sheds, workshops and offices in the Lucknow, Delhi, Ambala, Firozpur, Moradabad and Jammu clusters. Selection depends on a candidate’s notified ITI trade, chosen training unit, Class 10 marks, ITI marks and the category applicable to that precise trade/unit. There is no written examination, CBT, physical efficiency test or interview under this notice.

🚆 Six-cluster training seat distribution
The 4,651 seats are the sum of the UR, SC, ST and OBC columns in Annexure-A. Horizontal PwBD/Ex-servicemen positions are already included within that total and must not be added again.

Why choosing the correct unit and ITI trade matters
Annexure-A is not a common pool in which every ITI trade can compete for every cluster. Some establishments advertise only Electrician, Fitter or Welder while other offices list Stenographer, Data Entry Operator, Electronics Mechanic or Computer Operator & Programming Assistant. Choose a cluster and unit which actually notifies seats for the trade shown on your NCVT/SCVT ITI certificate. The notice warns that applying in a unit without a relevant notified trade makes the application liable to summary rejection, with no fee refund.
Reservation: separate vertical and horizontal counts
The source table distinguishes vertical reservations (UR, SC, ST, OBC) from notified horizontal slots for HI, LD, MD, VI and Ex-SM. Horizontal entries represent overlaps with the vertical categories; they are not additional apprentice vacancies. The total vertical-category pool is:
| All-cluster vertical seats | Count |
|---|---|
| UR | 2433 |
| SC | 755 |
| ST | 300 |
| OBC | 1163 |
Official horizontal reservation figures
| Cluster | HI | LD | MD | VI | Ex-servicemen | Seat total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lucknow | 14 | 15 | 4 | 9 | 38 | 1525 |
| Delhi | 18 | 14 | 10 | 8 | 42 | 1312 |
| Ambala | 14 | 16 | 8 | 1 | 69 | 979 |
| Firozpur | 16 | 4 | 0 | 13 | 27 | 740 |
| Moradabad | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 63 |
| Jammu | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 32 |
The actual number and suitability of disability-category places differs by trade and unit. A person claiming PwBD reservation must hold the prescribed disability certificate and must be suitable for the notified trade. Ex-servicemen positions and eligible defence-family categories are considered within the relevant vertical category; the notice identifies the order of consideration for children of deceased/disabled ex-servicemen, children of ex-servicemen, serving personnel’s children and ex-servicemen.
SC/ST documentation: candidates claiming these reservations need an appropriate Central Government-format caste certificate at document verification. OBC candidates: the Central Government-format caste and non-creamy-layer certificates must be valid for 2026–27; the notice specifies issue on or after 1 January 2026. PwBD applicants require a certificate issued by the competent medical authority. Candidates seeking ex-servicemen/armed-forces-family benefits must support the claim with the stated discharge or serving documents.
✅ Essential qualifications: both certificates must already be complete
To be considered, an applicant must satisfy both qualification requirements as of 6 November 2026, the notification date:
| Requirement | What the notice actually requires |
|---|---|
| Matriculation / SSC / 10th | Recognised board; at least 50% marks in aggregate under the 10+2 education system |
| Technical qualification | Passed NCVT/SCVT-recognised ITI in the specific relevant trade which has an advertised slot in the chosen unit |
| Qualification cut-off | Both Class 10 and ITI results must already have been declared by 6 November 2026 |
| Awaited results | Candidates awaiting either result on the notification date are ineligible |
Having a Class 10 certificate without the corresponding ITI qualification does not fulfil this recruitment’s prescribed criteria. Likewise, an ITI certificate without the specified Class 10 aggregate does not fulfil them. The merit calculation includes all subjects required by the applicable board/mark statement; do not enter marks from a preferred subject group only.
🎂 Age and relaxation — 11 December 2026 reference date
The applicant must have completed 15 years and must not have completed 24 years on 11 December 2026. The relaxation provisions in the notice are as follows:
| Applicant category | Relaxation described in official notice |
|---|---|
| SC / ST | 5 years above the ordinary upper-age limit |
| OBC | 3 years above the ordinary upper-age limit |
| Persons with disabilities | 10 years above the ordinary upper-age limit |
| Eligible ex-servicemen | Up to the notified additional relaxation linked to defence service plus three years, with the minimum continuous-service and civil-service exclusions in paragraph 3.4 |
Candidates claiming relaxation must hold the corresponding certificates. The age criteria refer to the closing date, whereas the educational qualification cut-off is the notification date; these are deliberately different dates in the original advertisement.
🏅 No written examination: precise 50:50 academic merit
RRC will screen and scrutinise forms and prepare a cluster-wise, trade-wise and community-wise merit list from the arithmetic average of the applicant’s Class 10 aggregate percentage and the relevant ITI examination percentage. Each carries equal weight. A prescribed percentage of Class 10 marks is an eligibility threshold; the resulting average determines the merit order within the applicable group.
| Academic merit weights | Count |
|---|---|
| Class 10 aggregate percentage | 50 |
| Relevant ITI percentage | 50 |
Formula: Final merit percentage = (Matriculation percentage + relevant ITI percentage) ÷ 2. The notice does not announce a written paper or interview. It anticipates the merit list in February 2027, but does not set a specific calendar date or disclose a cutoff.
Tie-breaking: if candidates have the same merit marks, the older candidate is preferred. If their dates of birth are also the same, preference goes to the candidate who passed Matriculation earlier.
Grade-point calculation: for school boards with grades, the railway describes using the midpoint of each grade range and an average over all attempted subjects, taking each out of 100. Class 10 marks are not to be calculated only on a selective group of subjects. ITI percentage is based on the trade’s all-semester consolidated marks or the provisional National Trade Certificate marks from NCVT/SCVT. Entered CGPA, marks and percentages must agree with original documents; a discrepancy at document verification is a ground for rejection.
💳 Application fee
| Applicant category | Fee payable | Refundability |
|---|---|---|
| General / OBC and other non-exempt applicants | ₹100, online | Non-refundable |
| SC / ST / PwBD / Women | ₹0 (exempt) | Not applicable |
| Application fee by group | Value |
|---|---|
| Other non-exempt applicants | 100 |
| SC / ST / PwBD / Women | 0 |
RRC accepts the fee through the online application process only, not cash, money order, demand draft or cheque. Any applicable bank/gateway transaction charges are borne by the applicant. A successful payment generates an e-receipt. Incorrect unit/trade selection, duplicate applications and other rejection grounds do not entitle the applicant to a fee refund.
💰 Training period and stipend
The advertisement states that the training period and stipend will be as per the rules applicable at the time. It does not specify a monthly stipend amount, a fixed salary band or a guaranteed training duration in this particular notice. There is no permanent pay-matrix grade or regular railway salary associated with these apprentice training slots. The selected candidate must execute the prescribed apprenticeship training contract before commencement; for a minor selected candidate, the guardian signs the contract.
🩺 Medical fitness and trade-linked disability suitability
At document verification a candidate must produce a medical fitness certificate in the prescribed apprenticeship format, signed by a government-authorised gazetted doctor not below Assistant Surgeon rank at a Central or State hospital. The Apprentices Act, 1961 and the applicable Apprenticeship Rules/physical fitness standards govern fitness for the designated trade.
Annexure/paragraph 6.2 provides separate suitability conditions for locomotor disability, visual impairment, hearing impairment and multiple disabilities. These are not interchangeable. Examples expressly listed in the notice include: partial lower-limb limitations for Fitter/Turner, limited finger restrictions for Machinist, trade-specific conditions for Mechanic (Motor Vehicle/Diesel), and a defined low-vision range for the specified trades. Hearing-impaired trade suitability is separately provided. Applicants should compare the exact disability and trade notified rather than relying on a generic PwBD label.
📑 Documents to upload and take to verification
Mandatory online attachments include proof of date of birth, Class 10 marksheet/certificate, consolidated ITI all-semester marksheet or provisional National Trade Certificate showing marks, and NCVT/SCVT trade certificate. Upload the additional category, PwBD, ex-servicemen or defence-family certificates wherever the claim applies. The image requirements in the notice specify JPG photograph, signature and thumb impression, each 10–50 KB. An application with missing or incorrect documents may be rejected.
On the assigned document-verification date, carry the original certificates and two self-attested photocopy sets. Certificates in a language other than English or Hindi must be accompanied by an attested English/Hindi translation. A medical fitness certificate is also required. Details of place, time and e-admit card for verification will be issued through the official RRC site; this DV e-admit card is not a written-examination admit card.

❗ Rejection grounds and practical constraints
An incomplete application, multiple submissions, mismatch between the ITI trade and chosen unit, missing Class 10 or ITI results as of 6 November, incorrect age, inconsistent marks, invalid category certificate, missing or unacceptable photo/signature/thumb impression, non-payment by a non-exempt applicant, or false/forged information can result in rejection. Applicants are not allowed to seek later relocation to another division or unit. The railway does not provide TA/DA or hostel accommodation for the selection or training arrangements; selected apprentices arrange their own accommodation. Railway administration may revise the provisional number of training seats.
Annexure-A: complete unit-wise and trade-wise seat register
The following are the unit-by-unit training-slot figures supplied with the original notification. They allow applicants to identify where their exact relevant ITI trade is advertised. UR/SC/ST/OBC add to the Total; HI/LD/MD/VI/Ex-SM are horizontal subset columns. The label “↳ same unit” repeats the establishment immediately above; it does not designate another workshop.

What is required from this cluster’s applicants?
Applicants must have Class 10 with at least 50% aggregate and an NCVT/SCVT-recognised ITI qualification in the relevant notified trade, with both results already declared on 6 November 2026. Applicants must have completed 15 years but not completed 24 years on 11 December 2026, subject to notified reservation-based relaxations. A candidate should not choose this cluster unless the specific unit offers his or her corresponding ITI trade.
Merit, verification and payment
Merit is drawn cluster-, trade- and category-wise from the equal average of Class 10 and ITI percentages, after application scrutiny; no written test or interview is scheduled. The older applicant prevails on a tied score; if dates of birth are also equal, the one who passed Matriculation earlier is preferred. Selected candidates must attend document verification with original certificates, the prescribed medical certificate and the required self-attested copies.
For applicants who do not qualify for an exemption, the application fee is ₹100 non-refundable, paid online. SC, ST, PwBD and women applicants are exempt. The stipend and training period are governed by applicable apprenticeship rules; no fixed monthly amount is advertised.
Training conditions
Successful apprentices receive training under the Apprentices Act framework and enter the prescribed contract before training begins. Completion of the training does not create a claim to railway employment. Applicants must follow the original unit/trade roster, and no requests for changing the chosen division or unit are accepted after submission.

Official notice: RRC/NR/03/2026/Act Apprentice — 18-page notification. Apply via: RRC Northern Railway from 11 November to 11 December 2026 (23:59).
