RRB Isolated Categories CEN 09/2026 — The 191-Post Recruitment Where Your Professional Credential Matters as Much as Your CBT Score
Indian Railways • 7 distinct professional posts • Application 5 November–4 December 2026 (23:59 IST) • Select one RRB only
This is not a general clerical recruitment. Seven different Railway posts — from the Class 12 science-entry Lab Assistant to the practising Public Prosecutor — share one notification but do not share the same educational test. Their specialist subjects, recruitment age ceilings, railway medical classifications and initial basic salaries are different. Comparing the vacancies without comparing the qualifications is likely to send candidates toward a post they cannot legally claim.
The detailed Railway Recruitment Board CEN 09/2026 lists 191 provisional positions, not the approximate 195 shown in the earlier indicative reporting. The summary is supported by the full Annexure-B railway/zone roster: 98 UR + 26 SC + 14 ST + 41 OBC-NCL + 12 EWS = 191. Another 11 Ex-Servicemen positions are shown as horizontal reservations within this number, not in addition to it.
🗓️ Critical dates and why two December deadlines differ
| Recruitment milestone | Published date and time |
|---|---|
| Indicative Employment News notice | 24 October 2026 |
| Online application begins | 5 November 2026 |
| Apply and submit online form | 4 December 2026, 23:59 |
| Fee payment for forms already submitted | 6 December 2026, 23:59 |
| Paid correction window | 7–16 December 2026 |
| CBT, Translator qualifying test and DV | Dates to be announced by the individual RRBs |
The 6 December fee date does not extend the 4 December deadline to submit a fresh application. During the correction period, a charge of ₹250 is payable per allowed change; details entered while creating an account and the selected RRB cannot be changed. Submit only a single application to a single RRB; multiple attempts can lead to rejection and debarment.
🥧 Seven post families: 191 opportunities, seven different eligibility screens
🥧 Official post-wise 191-vacancy share
| Notified post | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| Junior Translator (Hindi) | 79 |
| Lab Assistant Grade III (Chemist & Metallurgist) | 36 |
| Staff and Welfare Inspector | 27 |
| Public Prosecutor | 21 |
| Chief Law Assistant | 17 |
| Senior Publicity Inspector | 8 |
| Scientific Assistant (Training) | 3 |
Junior Translator's 79 positions represent approximately 41% of the notified posts, but a Masters degree and a specific Hindi–English translation qualification or relevant government experience are compulsory. Lab Assistant has 36 positions but is not open to every 12th-pass candidate: Physics and Chemistry must be present. Similarly, a Law degree without the requisite legal-practice standing will not meet Chief Law Assistant or Public Prosecutor requirements.
Official age, qualification, medical and basic pay — side by side
| Post | Seats | Age ceiling | Initial basic ₹ | Medical |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chief Law Assistant | 17 | 18–40 | 44900 | C-1 |
| Public Prosecutor | 21 | 18–32 | 44900 | C-1 |
| Senior Publicity Inspector | 8 | 18–33 | 35400 | C-1 |
| Junior Translator (Hindi) | 79 | 18–33 | 35400 | C-2 |
| Staff and Welfare Inspector | 27 | 18–33 | 35400 | C-1 |
| Scientific Assistant (Training) | 3 | 18–35 | 35400 | B-1 |
| Lab Assistant Grade III (Chemist & Metallurgist) | 36 | 18–30 | 19900 | B-1 |
Age limits above apply on 1 January 2027. General category upper limits differ from post to post: for example 40 for Chief Law Assistant, 32 for Public Prosecutor, 35 for Scientific Assistant and 30 for Lab Assistant. OBC-NCL ordinarily receives +3 and SC/ST +5 years where the candidate qualifies for the concession; additional eligible categories have their own rules in Para 5.2. Extra relaxations are not automatically stacked.
Pay means initial basic, not in-hand salary. These are 7th CPC Level-2, Level-6 and Level-7 basic pay values. Actual allowances and deductions will follow railway service rules. The post's medical category should be checked before selection: B-1, C-1 and C-2 prescribe different visual acuity requirements. In particular, the notice states conditional LASIK/Refractive-surgery eligibility for C-1 and C-2, not blanket acceptance for B-1.

📊 Initial monthly basic pay by notified role
| RRB post | Initial basic pay INR |
|---|---|
| Chief Law Assistant | 44900 |
| Public Prosecutor | 44900 |
| Senior Publicity Inspector | 35400 |
| Junior Translator (Hindi) | 35400 |
| Staff and Welfare Inspector | 35400 |
| Scientific Assistant (Training) | 35400 |
| Lab Assistant Grade III (Chemist & Metallurgist) | 19900 |
The same Level-6 basic pay of ₹35,400 applies to Senior Publicity Inspector, Junior Translator, Staff & Welfare Inspector and Scientific Assistant, even though their mandatory qualifications and tests have almost no overlap. Chief Law Assistant and Public Prosecutor begin at Level-7 basic ₹44,900; Lab Assistant begins at Level-2 ₹19,900. A salary comparison is useful, but eligibility, medical fitness, appointment and preference constraints are equally decisive.
The single-RRB decision: where each vacancy actually sits
The 191 openings are spread among 16 RRBs, covering 60 specific Railway/Production Unit entries. Choosing the RRB with the most posts is not necessarily the best choice for every category: a large board can have no seat in the particular post/vertical reservation sought. A candidate can apply through one RRB only, and the selected RRB cannot later be altered.

The next table retains the actual board and unit split. Reading one row may make a material difference: the same RRB can offer a position in more than one Railway Zone or production unit. Names such as NFR, WR, NR, CLW and RDSO are Railway administrations or units under the chosen RRB; they are not additional RRB application choices.

🧾 Seven eligibility filters applicants should examine before paying
1. Practising lawyers — two separate legal posts, not interchangeable
Chief Law Assistant (17 posts): Law degree plus three years' standing practice as a pleader at the Bar. The notice also provides a specific route for law-graduate serving railway employees with five years' railway service. Public Prosecutor (21 posts): graduation plus law degree and five years' standing as advocate. The difference is real, and the categories cannot be treated as one "LLB recruitment". Chief Law Assistant's upper age is 40; Public Prosecutor's is 32. Both are C-1 medical and carry ₹44,900 basic.
2. Junior Translator (Hindi) — a degree combination AND translation evidence
The 79-seat Translator post asks for prescribed postgraduate Hindi/English combinations and either a recognised bilingual translation diploma/certificate or two years' relevant translation in the stated Central/State Government establishments. A Hindi or English Master's alone is insufficient if the additional condition cannot be met. The objective CBT contains 30 Hindi + 20 English + 50 general questions. A further qualifying translation test requires 60%; its score does not raise the final CBT merit.
3. Staff and Welfare Inspector — pay attention to the second credential
For 27 seats the qualifying route is graduation plus one of the accepted labour/welfare/personnel-management qualifications. Examples include Labour/Social Welfare Diploma, Labour Laws Diploma, LLB with Labour Laws papers, specified Personnel Management PG Diploma, an MBA containing Personnel Management papers, MBA–HR or an eligible recognised HRM PG Diploma with Personnel Management papers. Generic graduation without that recognised additional credential is insufficient.
4. Publicity — desirable experience is not a mandatory minimum
Senior Publicity Inspector has only eight vacancies. The essential combination is a university degree and an eligible Public Relations/Advertising/Journalism/Mass Communication Diploma. The two years of related experience mentioned in Annexure-A are desirable. Treating that preference as a compulsory two-year threshold would wrongly exclude potential applicants.
5. Scientific Assistant — exact minimum percentage matters
Scientific Assistant (Training) has three positions and requires a Master's in Psychology with at least 50% aggregate. Industrial/Organisational/Clinical Psychology specialisation, previous counselling or guidance programme work and working computer knowledge are described as desirable. This post is assigned medical B-1, not C-1.
6. Laboratory science — Class 12 must contain both named subjects
Lab Assistant Grade III (Chemist & Metallurgist) has 36 seats. The minimum academic qualification is 12th (+2) or equivalent with Physics and Chemistry as subjects. The paper then tests metallic and non-metallic materials, paints, testing machinery, lubrication, chemical examination and non-destructive tests. This is not a general school-lab teaching post.
📝 CBT: shared 90-minute rule, specialist papers that are not shared
The selection route is single-stage CBT → additional Translation Test for Junior Translator only → document verification → prescribed Railway medical examination. RRB can introduce extra CBT stages if administratively required, but the advertised ordinary path has one main CBT. The CBT is 100 objective questions, 100 marks and 90 minutes; eligible candidates using a scribe receive 120 minutes. Every incorrect answer attracts a one-third-mark deduction and multi-shift CBT scores can be normalised.
For the six non-Translator posts, the following subject split is indicative, rather than a promise that the live paper cannot vary:
| CBT subject | Indicative questions / marks |
|---|---|
| Post-specific Professional Ability | 50 |
| General Awareness | 15 |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 15 |
| Mathematics | 10 |
| General Science (CBSE Class 10 level) | 10 |
| Total | 100 |
For Junior Translator, 50 questions instead test the Hindi/English language (30/20) and the other 50 cover general knowledge, intelligence, simple arithmetic and computers. The professional-ability topic lists in Annexures IX–XV cannot be swapped between positions.
CBT qualifying standards versus the actual shortlist
| Community | Minimum qualifying percentage |
|---|---|
| UR | 40 |
| EWS | 40 |
| OBC-NCL | 30 |
| SC | 30 |
| ST | 25 |
Qualifying this percentage is not the same as receiving a document-verification call. The final shortlisting will reflect seat numbers, RRB preferences, test merit and any additional qualifying test. For eligible PwBD candidates, a two-mark relaxation in qualifying marks is possible only under the stated shortfall conditions.
Translation Test: not a general Railway CBT stage
Only the Junior Translator (Hindi) recruitment has a separate translation stage. Approximately 10 times its seats may be called, subject to reservation and CBT merit. The translation test is qualifying at 60% and its marks are not added to the final Translator merit; the main CBT determines rank among those who qualify in the translation test.
🩺 B-1, C-1 and C-2: why the medical code can affect eligibility
These three standards prescribe different visual requirements. For B-1 the notice specifies distant vision 6/9 and 6/12 with or without glasses within the prescribed 4D correction limit, near vision Sn 0.6, 0.6, and applicable colour/binocular/night/mesopic tests. C-1 requires 6/12 and 6/18 distant vision, while C-2 provides a 6/12, NIL distant-vision and combined-near-vision standard in its published definition. The medical examination is conducted by Railway Administration; self-certifying fitness does not replace it.
The original CEN states limited eligibility after corrective LASIK or refractive surgery for medically relevant C-1/C-2 posts, subject to Railway conditions. Do not assume a C-1 qualification makes someone eligible for B-1. Candidates found medically unsuitable for the opted role are not guaranteed an alternative post.
💳 Fee refund is tied to actual CBT attendance
| Applicant class | Fee ₹ | Refund only after CBT attendance |
|---|---|---|
| All others not receiving fee concession | 500 | ₹400 minus bank charges |
| SC/ST/ExSM/PwBD/women/transgender/minority/eligible EBC | 250 | ₹250 minus bank charges |
EBC refers to the fee-concession category subject to income/certificate conditions, distinct from EWS/OBC job-reservation status. The original CEN identifies an annual family-income standard below ₹50,000 for this concession. Refund goes through a valid Aadhaar-seeded bank account and is not due for rejected/non-submitted applications or absent CBT attendance. Eligible SC/ST applicants can request prescribed free Sleeper Class Railway travel authority when applying.
📱 Application decisions and evidence checklist
- Open the official unified Railway Recruitment Boards site and choose the online application for CEN 09/2026. Sign in using an existing RRB account if one has been created under the earlier notices, or create one with accurate Class 10 name, date of birth and mobile/email particulars.
- Select one RRB and then only those positions/Railways/Units for which the required degree, subject, professional experience, medical standard and age conditions are met. Post preferences have consequences: an unselected post may be treated as unwillingness for that post.
- Complete personal, education, reservation and professional-experience details truthfully. Follow the prescribed live photograph and signature-upload specifications; do not substitute a copied or unclear signature or photo.
- Pay the correct category fee before the prescribed time, check submission confirmation and retain a copy for future stages. Keep the Aadhaar-linked refund account available if a refund is applicable.
- Prepare originals and supporting documents for later verification: proof of 10th-class recorded name/date of birth, higher qualifications, degree subject combinations, Bar-standing evidence, translation experience/certificates or labour-management qualification as relevant, community/EWS/OBC-NCL/PwBD/ExSM certificates when claimed, government NOC where applicable, and identification.
The final application must be submitted by 4 December 2026, 23:59 IST, even though a qualifying submitted application may still have a fee-payment window until 6 December. The choice of RRB and account-creation particulars cannot be changed during the correction window.
📋 Selection, tie-breaking and appointment
For document verification, candidates are shortlisted generally RRB-wise against available posts in a 1:1 ratio on merit after the applicable tests. If two candidates have identical marks, the older candidate receives higher preference; if their age is equal, the candidate whose given name comes first alphabetically is ranked ahead, rather than using surname. Producing original documents and meeting the assigned Railway medical standard remain indispensable before appointment. A reserve or empanelment position is not an automatic employment guarantee.
Focused candidate questions
Does one degree work for all seven post types? No. The notice creates seven distinct educational entry gates; even two law posts have different Bar practice requirements.
Can a candidate select two RRBs because a specialised post appears in both? No. A candidate must choose one RRB, one application and only the post/zone preferences available under that RRB.
Is the 191 figure different from older 195 headlines? Yes. The actual seven-post table and full Annexure-B total in the detailed CEN add to 191.
Are CBT cut-offs the same as final selection scores? No. The advertised percentages are minimum eligibility standards, not predictions of RRB-specific competitive qualifying scores.
Does a higher Translator Translation Test score help final merit? No. The Translation Test is qualifying at 60%; final merit among passers is determined from objective CBT marks.
Is a Class 12 pass enough for Lab Assistant? Only if Physics and Chemistry were subjects in the qualifying examination, as the post parameters specify.
Can the upper-age relaxation be added repeatedly? The specified eligible relaxations apply under their respective rules; multiple concessions are not automatically cumulative.
Where will the examination date appear? RRBs will announce CBT/Translation Test schedules and admit-card arrangements separately on their official webpages. No specific exam date is stated in this detailed advertisement.

There are 0 Ex-Servicemen earmarked places indicated within this category's railway/board entries; these are horizontal allocations and do not enlarge the 17-vacancy total. The actual opening available to an applicant depends on the selected RRB, its Railways/Units and the individual category row, not merely this national count.
What the work and selection demand
Legal assistance on Railway disputes, legal files and case processes as assigned by the administration; the precise assignment is determined after appointment. The professional portion of the CBT is framed for this particular post: Legal drafting, procedural law, Railway administration and evaluation of records. Other parts test general awareness, reasoning, arithmetic and general science, except the separately structured Junior Translator paper.
What is tested in the specialist syllabus
- Constitutional law: Preamble, Fundamental Rights/Duties, Directive Principles and Union institutions (3–5 questions).
- Administrative law, jurisprudence, torts and Hindu law (combined topics, each independently listed in Annexure-XI).
- Civil Procedure Code: institution of suits, written statements, discovery, decrees, execution, appeal, review and revision (5–7 questions).
- Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023: criminal process, offences and evidence (2–3 each).
- Indian Contract Act, Limitation Act, Specific Relief Act, Partnership Act, Arbitration and Conciliation Act (annexure-specific ranges).
- Consumer Protection, human-rights protections, Transfer of Property, Right to Information, Company Law and Labour Laws (Annexure-XI).
