State Bank of India

PsuPublic Sector BankCentralBanking Finance

State Bank of India (SBI) is India's largest public sector bank, headquartered in Mumbai. Established on 1 July 1955, with institutional roots tracing back to the Bank of Calcutta in 1806, SBI occupies a distinctive position in India's financial system by connecting everyday retail banking with agricultural finance, corporate lending, government banking and international financial services.

Beyond its extensive branch network, SBI operates at the intersection of financial inclusion and large-scale banking technology, with digital banking, cybersecurity, risk management and data-driven services forming important parts of its operations. Its recruitment opportunities span clerical and probationary officer positions, specialist technology and finance roles, and senior professional appointments. Employment conditions vary by advertisement, making it essential for applicants to distinguish regular bank careers from contractual specialist engagements.

About this Recruitment

Recruitment-specific overview from the published record.

SBI Fire Engineer 2026: match your qualification to the right experience requirement

SBI’s 17 Assistant Manager–Engineer (Fire) vacancies are for experienced fire professionals who can take responsibility for safety across bank premises. The work extends from checking an engineering drawing to following an audit objection through to closure. It also involves staff training, evacuation drills and coordination with local authorities. Someone looking for a purely classroom-based engineering role should examine those duties before deciding whether the post suits them.

Applications open on 4 November 2026 and close on 25 November 2026 under advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/29. Appointment is regular, in Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I), with posting anywhere in India. Age, qualifications and qualifying experience are assessed on 31 October 2026.

The first decision is an eligibility decision: which of the prescribed qualification routes do you hold? SBI attaches two years of experience to the listed degree routes, but three years with specified officer responsibilities to the professional-membership/course routes. An otherwise strong application can fail if that distinction is missed.

The additional backlog vacancy belongs to ST. Thus the combined ST count is two; it should not be read as one by looking only at the regular-vacancy row. SBI describes these numbers as provisional and may revise them according to its requirements.

🎓 Qualification and experience: read the two columns together

Qualification held by 31 October 2026Experience required by the same date
B.E. (Fire), NFSC NagpurAt least two years of composite experience in fire safety with a reputed organisation
B.E./B.Tech, Safety & Fire EngineeringSame two-year fire-safety requirement
B.E./B.Tech, Fire Technology & Safety EngineeringSame two-year fire-safety requirement
Equivalent four-year Fire Safety degree from a UGC-recognised university/AICTE-approved institutionSame two-year fire-safety requirement
Graduate member, Institution of Fire Engineers, India or UKAt least three years in one of the specified fire-officer roles
Divisional Officers course, NFSC NagpurSame three-year specified fire-officer requirement

For the last two routes, SBI names Station Officer or equivalent work in a City/State Fire Brigade, In-Charge Fire Officer work in corporates or large industrial complexes, or Fire Officer work in State Government institutions/PSUs. These routes require the stated responsibility as well as the duration. Three years of unrelated employment does not establish that requirement.

📊 Minimum experience by qualification route

Qualification routeMinimum years
Prescribed fire-engineering degree2
IFE graduate membership or NFSC DO course3

What to check in your own service record

Start with the qualification document and its completion date. Then place the qualifying employment periods alongside it. SBI calls for relevant post-qualification, full-time experience by the cutoff. A period that you will complete after 31 October cannot be used to bridge a shortfall at that date.

Your employer’s certificate should identify the work actually performed. A document confirming only that you were employed, without identifying the required fire-safety field or officer responsibilities, leaves an important part of the claim unsupported. Review the designation, dates and duties together before asking HR for the certificate.

For example, a candidate on a prescribed degree route with two completed years of qualifying fire-safety work should examine that two-year route. An IFE graduate member with the same duration should examine the separate three-year requirement instead. This comparison explains the notice; SBI makes the final decision on individual eligibility.

A general engineering degree, a safety diploma, or ordinary membership of a professional body should not be assumed to satisfy the named qualifications. Check the exact degree title, course and membership grade against the advertisement, particularly when relying on equivalence. The equivalent-degree provision specifically concerns a four-year Fire Safety qualification.

Age, medical fitness and reservation documents

The stated age band is 21–40 years on 31 October 2026. The upper limit is the UR limit; eligible reserved-category applicants may receive relaxation under the applicable Government of India rules. Supporting certificates are required when called, and cumulative relaxation is unavailable.

The post requires medical fitness. Applicants should keep their eligibility and supporting records ready for the checks made during selection and appointment.

ClaimDocument point to check
SC/ST reservationCompetent-authority caste certificate in the prescribed format
OBC reservationNon-creamy-layer certificate issued from 1 April 2026 up to the interview date, with the required NCL clause
EWS reservationIncome and Asset Certificate based on FY 2025–26, valid for 2026–27, following the notice’s possession and verification instructions
Age relaxationCertificate supporting the category and applicable claim
Relevant experienceEmployer evidence explicitly describing the required field and service

OBC creamy-layer candidates cannot claim OBC reservation. EWS applicants should read the certificate instructions before selecting a category; the advertisement sets both the relevant financial year and the document-verification requirement. Do not postpone this check until interview preparation, because registration locks the category choice.

💼 What the job involves at bank premises

The duties combine engineering judgement with repeated follow-up. A visit may identify an inadequate arrangement, but the responsibility continues through recommending an improvement, checking compliance and recording closure. That distinction matters to candidates whose experience has mainly involved installation or maintenance at one site.

Area of workPractical responsibility described in the notice
Premises inspectionVisit branches/offices, review fire-safety arrangements and recommend improvements
Annual auditCarry out fire-safety audits and follow compliance through to closure
Engineering reviewVet drawings, layouts and estimates for fire-safety equipment installations
Evacuation and trainingConduct drills and train employees, floor marshals and fire-control-room staff
PreparednessPrepare fire orders and communicate disaster-management arrangements
Statutory coordinationLiaise with fire services, municipal/civil authorities and arrange premises Fire NOCs
Building suitabilityEvaluate designs and layouts against relevant local building bylaws

SBI expects familiarity with fire pumps, hydrants, detection and alarm equipment, sprinklers, evacuation procedures and fire-safety auditing. In an interview, examples from actual work can demonstrate how that knowledge informed a decision. Prepare the problem, your responsibility, the evidence examined, the action taken and how completion was verified. Use only work you can substantiate.

Location and transfer: choose the career with this in mind

The notified place of posting is anywhere in India. An examination-city choice does not become a posting preference or a promise of a home-state appointment. The bank’s transfer and deputation provisions apply, and a request for a particular location may not be accepted.

Candidates already working at an industrial site should weigh the shift to responsibility across banking premises. The technical foundation remains important, while the day-to-day work may involve coordinating with several branches, staff teams and external authorities.

Salary: ₹48,480 starting basic, with allowances under SBI rules

The notified basic-pay scale is ₹48,480–2,000/7–₹62,480–2,340/2–₹67,160–2,680/7–₹85,920. It is a JMGS-I scale, with six months’ probation.

Pay elementHow to read it
Initial basic pay₹48,480 per month
First increment segmentSeven increments of ₹2,000 reach ₹62,480
Second segmentTwo increments of ₹2,340 reach ₹67,160
Final segmentSeven increments of ₹2,680 reach ₹85,920
Other benefitsApplicable DA, HRA, CCA, PF/NPS, LFC, medical facilities and other benefits under bank rules

The scale endpoints are basic-pay figures. They are not a guaranteed take-home range. Actual monthly credit depends on applicable allowances, deductions and other service conditions; the advertisement does not give a single net-salary figure for every posting.

📝 Online test: both papers count

PaperQuestionsMarksSeparate time
English Language505040 minutes
Professional Knowledge757580 minutes
Total125125120 minutes

There is no penalty for wrong answers. Work within the separate paper timings; the total two-hour duration should not be treated as one freely interchangeable time bank. The average time available works out to 48 seconds per English question and 64 seconds per Professional Knowledge question. Those averages are planning calculations, not instructions to spend the same time on every question.

English is part of the written score used for merit. A preparation plan that treats it as a qualifying formality would give away a meaningful scoring opportunity. The interview carries 100 marks, with its qualifying standard decided by SBI. Candidates are called category-wise in numbers determined by the bank from those qualifying in the written test.

The 70:30 merit calculation, with a worked example

The written score out of 125 is converted to 70; interview marks out of 100 are converted to 30:

Final weighted score = (written marks ÷ 125 × 70) + (interview marks ÷ 100 × 30).

A written score of 100/125 and interview score of 70/100 would therefore yield 56 + 21 = 77/100, subject to the qualifying requirements. This is an illustration of the formula, not an expected cutoff.

Each additional written mark adds 0.56 to the weighted total; each interview mark adds 0.30. Since English supplies 50 of the written paper’s 125 marks, its maximum contribution is 28 of the final 100. Professional Knowledge contributes up to 42, and interview up to 30.

🥧 Maximum contribution to the final weighted score

ComponentMaximum weighted marks
English Language28
Professional Knowledge42
Interview30

The chart is a calculation from the notified paper marks and 70:30 weighting, rather than a separate selection rule. SBI determines qualifying standards and prepares merit under its stated category-wise process. At a cutoff tie, older candidates receive precedence through descending age. The bank also reserves the right to change the selection method, including shortlisting and interview.

📚 Preparation: connect the syllabus to the work

The Professional Knowledge syllabus names three broad areas: Fire Engineering, Fire Service Administration, and Fire Service Regulatory Acts/Bylaws. The fire-engineering level is tied to the stated DO, IFE and fire-engineering qualifications. The notice does not allocate individual topic-wise marks within the 75-mark paper.

The following is a study approach based on those areas and the published job responsibilities. It is not an additional official syllabus or a forecast of question distribution.

Study areaUseful way to reviseWhat to produce during practice
Fire-engineering fundamentalsRevisit the principles behind systems you have installed, operated or auditedA concise explanation of system purpose, limitations and checks
Pumps, hydrants and sprinklersLink system components to inspections and maintenance evidenceA review checklist that distinguishes an observed defect from a possible cause
Detection and alarmsFollow detection, warning and response as one operational sequenceA short scenario explaining how a reported fault would be investigated
EvacuationConnect building layout, staff roles and drillsA drill review recording observations and corrective actions
Fire-service administrationRevisit records, training, responsibilities and follow-upAn audit action register with an owner, target and closure evidence
Acts and bylawsRead authoritative provisions relevant to premises and approvalsNotes separating the governing requirement from local implementation

For English, use timed practice followed by an error review. Identify whether lost marks came from comprehension, vocabulary, sentence structure or hasty reading. The advertisement names English Language but does not give a detailed subtopic allocation, so avoid building a plan around an invented grammar-versus-comprehension split.

A useful practice cycle is to attempt a timed paper, classify the errors, revise the underlying concept and then retry comparable questions. Keep the paper’s scoring and timing in view. No negative marking removes a wrong-answer deduction, but it does not make time spent on an unresolved question cost-free: that time may displace an answer you could have completed.

Interview preparation from your own work

Select a few genuine examples: an audit finding you closed, a drill that exposed a weakness, a drawing you reviewed, or a statutory approval you helped coordinate. Explain your own contribution rather than claiming the whole team’s work. Be ready to discuss why you chose an action and what evidence showed that it worked.

Bring the experience certificate into that preparation. If your examples concern responsibilities absent from the certificate, resolve the documentation gap with your employer where appropriate. A persuasive account of work and a verifiable service record should support each other.

Watch the official Careers entry and the registered contact details for subsequent instructions. An admit card permits participation provisionally; it does not settle eligibility or replace original-document verification.

Application fee and a careful submission sequence

CategoryApplication fee/intimation charge
General / EWS / OBC₹750
SC / ST₹0

The fee is non-refundable. Where payable, registration is complete only after successful online payment by the deadline. Keep the receipt and completed form together so that you can verify both the submitted particulars and the transaction.

  1. Open the SBI Careers entry for CRPD/SCO/2026-27/29, then follow its application link.
  2. Confirm the qualification route, experience cutoff and category before completing the form.
  3. Enter dates and employment details consistently with the certificates; review spellings and contact details.
  4. Upload the required images and supporting records, and check that each is readable in the preview.
  5. Recheck the saved form, then complete final submission and fee payment where applicable.
  6. Save the final application and payment acknowledgement. Do not send a printed application to the recruitment office.

The notice permits editing a saved application up to three times. After final submission/payment, changes are unavailable. If multiple applications are made, only the last valid completed application is retained; earlier fees are forfeited. Starting with accurate documents is therefore preferable to relying on another paid submission to correct avoidable mistakes.

Uploads and supporting records

File or recordPreparation point
PhotographJPG/JPEG, 20–50 KB; preferred 200 × 230 pixels; complete the additional live-photo capture
SignatureBlack ink, not capital letters; JPG/JPEG, 10–20 KB; preferred 140 × 60 pixels
Thumb impressionClear left-thumb image; use the prescribed alternative if the left thumb is unavailable
Handwritten declarationWrite the prescribed English text yourself in black ink on white paper; use the dedicated upload instructions and check portal validation
Supporting documentsA4 PDF scans, up to 500 KB per document under the notice’s instructions
Eligibility evidenceDOB/ID, qualification certificates and marksheets, relevant experience certificates and applicable category records
Employment evidenceResume and requested employment/pay records such as offer letter, salary evidence or Form 16

For the declaration, copy the wording from the official advertisement rather than a paraphrase. Its dedicated image instructions specify 50–100 KB, while a later general scanning paragraph states a 50 KB ceiling; check the live upload field’s acceptance before final submission. This discrepancy concerns image preparation and does not alter the qualification or application deadline.

Employees of Government, quasi-Government, PSUs, nationalised banks and financial institutions should arrange the applicable employer NOC for interview. Required release/discharge documentation must also be available at joining. Keep originals accessible even after successful uploads: scanned records do not replace verification.

Examination centre, travel and the final check

Annexure I lists examination locations. Select a centre according to the choices offered in the application, and later follow the location and reporting instructions in the call letter. Examination travel is at the candidate’s own expense.

For eligible outstation interview candidates, the advertisement provides reimbursement of economy airfare by the prescribed shortest-route rule, capped at ₹10,000 for the return journey or actual fare, whichever is lower, subject to evidence and eligibility. Keep tickets and boarding passes; local conveyance is excluded. Read the reimbursement conditions before making arrangements rather than treating the ceiling as an automatic allowance.

Before submitting, answer four questions from your documents: Which qualification route applies? Is its required post-qualification experience complete by 31 October? Can the chosen category be supported? Are you willing to serve anywhere in India? Once those are settled, the examination plan becomes much clearer: protect English marks, build accurate professional knowledge and prepare to explain the fire-safety work you have actually done.
