What the Institute has actually announced

Paragraph 6 on page 6 of the original eight-page notice is controlling. The Institute first makes a preliminary shortlisting on essential qualifications and experience. Final selection of shortlisted candidates will be on their performance in Presentation and Interview before the Selection Committee. If applications are numerous, the Institute may determine a reasonable method to limit the number of presentations/interviews. The same clause says Written Test and Computer/Other Test may be conducted, if required, under IIT (ISM) Dhanbad Recruitment Rules.

This wording does not give a written examination date, a published CBT syllabus, negative-marking rules, a trade-test timetable or numerical interview marks. A conditional test cannot be described as a confirmed scheduled exam. No individual subject-specific examination pattern is notified for the nine disciplines. The notice also permits the presentation/interview to be held online depending on the situation; do not assume a physical attendance date until the Institute communicates one.

Gate 1 — Screening the academic route correctly

The common floor is 55% marks in the qualifying degree and mandatory office-software proficiency. The years vary with the actual alternative: a permitted M.Tech/ME route generally requires two years, M.Sc./MCA where permitted generally four, and a permitted four-year engineering bachelor’s route five. Crucially, a candidate cannot choose the shortest experience requirement independent of their own qualifying degree.

• Chemistry and Chemical Biology: Chemistry / Applied Chemistry / Industrial Chemistry Master's; four years Level-7 relevant service.
• Central Research Facility: Zoology / Biochemistry / Biotechnology / Microbiology Master's; four years.
• Civil: M.Tech Civil + two years, or four-year Civil bachelor's + five years.
• Computer Science: M.Tech CS/allied + two, four-year engineering CS/allied + five, or M.Sc. CS/MCA + four.
• Electrical: M.Tech Electrical + two, or four-year Electrical bachelor's + five.
• Electronics: M.Tech/ME or four-year bachelor's in Electronics/ECE/Electronics & Telecommunication; two or five years respectively.
• Mechanical: M.Tech Mechanical in named specialisations + two, or four-year Mechanical bachelor's + five.
• Physics: Master's in Physics + four years.
• Fire Safety: M.Tech/ME Fire Engineering/Fire & Safety + two, four-year fire-engineering bachelor's + five, or M.Sc. Fire & Safety Management + four; plus the specifically listed firefighting, system-maintenance and high-rise safety experience.

An experience certificate without a Central/CDA Pay-Level-7 reference or an appropriate equivalence certificate for another pay structure can lose all value for this recruitment: the notice says experience not backed by required pay equivalence will not be considered. The Institute's Scrutiny Committee determines whether the claimed experience is relevant.

Gate 2 — If the Institute chooses an additional assessment

The only confirmed status is that a written/computer/other test may be held. An objective-paper score, paper duration, practical test, question distribution and minimum qualifying mark have not been declared. Historical IIT (ISM) tests or internal LDCE papers serve a different competition and must not be represented as the official 2026 direct-recruitment pattern. Candidates should monitor the Institute's official recruitment notices for any later announcement before treating a syllabus as authoritative.

Useful preparation is not the same as a notified syllabus

Applicants can review core knowledge in their own advertised discipline, quantitative and safety decisions tied to their real responsibilities, how they document technical work, and their competence with Word/Excel/PowerPoint. These are generic skills for technical interviews, not a published question bank and not evidence that a computer test will be administered. There is no official number of MCQs, no announced negative marking and no confirmed marks ratio between stages.

Gate 3 — Presentation: show real decisions instead of just credentials

The published notice does not impose a presentation duration, slide count or topic. A compelling applicant presentation is generally built around evidence of one work assignment personally completed, rather than a list of job titles. It can follow: problem and operational context; relevant scientific/engineering constraints; the candidate's precise decisions and implementation; measurable verification; and lessons/controls that another technical team could reproduce. Clearly distinguish what was personally done from team output. Avoid unsupported claims about the Institute's future laboratory allocation.

Department-wise illustrative technical case studies (not official questions)

Chemistry and Chemical Biology: an analytical workflow, sample quality and traceability, an observed method deviation, calibration/validation approach and what evidence established reliability. Use only instruments and techniques actually covered by the candidate's work.

Central Research Facility: biological sample governance, contamination control, support for multiple researchers and clarity of results reporting. If the past experience is in zoology, biochemistry, biotechnology or microbiology, show precisely where that discipline enters the workflow.

Civil Engineering: a structural/material/site quality issue, design assumptions, measurement/test evidence, corrective response, safety implications and documentation trace.

Computer Science: a real system's reliability or operational problem, architecture decisions, troubleshooting, testing, access or data-governance controls and measured post-fix behaviour. No programming language is explicitly prescribed by the original vacancy.

Electrical Engineering: safe isolation and operation of an electrical system, ratings/measurement basis, protection, fault diagnosis and verified restoration or maintenance outcomes.

Electronics Engineering: a measurement chain or electronics subsystem, test/diagnostic methods, communication or instrumentation anomalies, quality controls and repeatable resolution.

Mechanical Engineering: a mechanical design/manufacture/thermal/robotics case linked to the named degree, modelling or test assumptions, safety constraints, observed failure and outcome. Applicants in Robotics and AI should evidence mechanical-engineering relevance.

Physics: a reproducible physical measurement, calibration, uncertainty, controlled variables and what the observations do or do not prove.

Fire Safety: fire-fighting system maintenance, an incident/accident analysis, inspection and job-safety analysis, and practical high-rise fire-safety experience. Distinguish prevention, readiness, escalation and follow-up verification.

These examples help applicants organise truthful experience; they are not an official post-wise syllabus, interview script or guaranteed topic list. The official selection committee decides the actual method and questions.

Gate 4 — Interview and verification

The notice makes Presentation and Interview the basis of final selection, without publishing an interview scorecard or the weight of a presentation. Expect the candidate's education and experience to be checked against originals. There is no benefit in improvising dates, pay levels or job titles: the recruitment information must match certificates, and later discovery of concealment of service, vigilance or disciplinary matters may trigger action.

Serving candidates in Central/State/UT Government, government autonomous bodies and PSUs may initially send an advance application without the NOC, but they must present the employer NOC at Interview to remain eligible for consideration. Reserved-category claims require correct certificates, and EWS/OBC-NCL certificates need an issue date no earlier than 1 April 2026. PwBD claims require the prescribed disability documentation.

Applicants shortlisted for the Presentation and Interview may, subject to tickets and claim, be reimbursed shortest-route AC-3 rail fare booked directly from IRCTC. This entitlement is conditional on the published terms and does not apply to all applicants. The Institute may opt for online interviews and can move selected officers between its departments/sections as required.

Questions a selection committee may investigate without any published question bank

An interview focused on documented experience can distinguish a statement of achievement from evidence of what the applicant actually did. If a candidate says an equipment fault was corrected, useful follow-up evidence may concern the initial failure condition, measurements, safety precautions, decision authority, comparison against alternatives, test after repair and records. For academic-laboratory roles, the comparable chain is sample identity, controlled procedure, quality assurance and interpretation. For Fire Safety it includes incident chronology, high-rise constraints and system-readiness checks. This paragraph describes possible evidence-based interview conversation, not official question topics.

Candidates should not invent permanent assignments at the Institute from its departmental name. The advertisement expressly allows transfers among internal departments and sections. What can legitimately be demonstrated is past technical judgment and relevant work at the prescribed level. Similarly, a 40-year age cap or reservation category cannot substitute for the required technical education and professional experience; each element remains independently reviewable.

Why the earlier technical-officer test should not be copied

IIT (ISM) has run technical-officer recruitments and internal promotion assessments in other years. Their topics and marks belong to their respective original advertisements and amendments. Advertisement 411002/7/2026-NFR is a new direct-recruitment notice dated 5 November 2026. Nothing in its eight pages adopts a previous test as the current paper format. The defensible preparation strategy is to master the discipline and documented practical experience while treating the Institute's later official selection announcement as the only authority for any test-specific syllabus or schedule.
